Chapter 13 - Diane Tried to Turn Everyone Against Me

Diane’s public campaign began the next morning.

She posted on social media.

Not my name.

Not directly.

But everyone knew.

Sometimes money changes people. Sometimes a family gives someone years of love only to discover they value property more than relationships. Please pray for mothers watching their children suffer because of another person’s cruelty.

Within an hour, relatives were commenting.

Stay strong, Diane.

Family should come before money.

Praying for Caleb.

One person wrote:

No pregnant woman should make major decisions while hormonal.

That comment nearly made me throw my phone.

Instead, I screenshot everything.

Marcus sighed when I sent them.

“Stop reading comments.”

“I’m documenting.”

“Elena can document.”

“I want to know what they’re saying.”

“Why?”

I opened my mouth.

Nothing came out.

Because I wanted control.

That was the truth.

I wanted to monitor every lie so none could surprise me.

But that meant Diane still controlled my attention.

I deleted the app.

For approximately six hours.

Then Rachel called.

“Claire, something is happening.”

“What?”

“Diane invited the family to dinner.”

“So?”

“She says she’s going to show everyone ‘proof’ that you stole Caleb’s business.”

I almost laughed.

“My business?”

“That’s what she says.”

“Rachel, why are you telling me?”

A pause.

“Because she told everyone you inherited Vance & Shaw from your grandmother.”

My eyebrows lifted.

Grandmother had invested in my original company.

But I founded it.

Caleb joined later.

“That’s not true.”

“I know. I looked up the state filings.”

That surprised me.

Rachel continued.

“And I’m tired of listening to her call you unstable.”

My eyes filled unexpectedly.

“Thank you.”

“I don’t know the whole story.”

“You shouldn’t.”

“But I know when someone keeps changing theirs.”

Rachel attended Diane’s dinner.

I didn’t ask her to record anything.

She did anyway.

Not secretly.

Diane was speaking loudly in front of fifteen relatives and Rachel simply asked whether she could clarify the accusations.

Diane said yes.

Then Rachel asked:

“If Claire stole Caleb’s company, why do incorporation records show Claire as founder before Caleb became a shareholder?”

Diane’s answer:

“Paperwork isn’t the whole truth.”

Then:

“If the house belonged to Caleb’s family, why was it inherited by Claire?”

“Marriage makes it family property.”

Not legally.

Then Rachel asked about Brooke’s consulting payments.

That was when Diane exploded.

“How do you know about that?”

The room apparently went silent.

Rachel hadn’t known the amount.

She only knew there were disputed payments from family rumors.

But Diane’s reaction told everyone the payments were real.

People started asking questions.

Diane left.

Rachel called me from her car.

“I think I made things worse.”

“For whom?”

She laughed.

“Good point.”

For the first time, Diane’s narrative began cracking.

Relatives who had messaged me about hormones started apologizing.

I didn’t answer most of them.

Not to punish them.

I simply lacked energy.

Dr. Patel had warned me again about blood pressure.

The baby could arrive anytime within the next several weeks.

I wanted my body focused on her, not family gossip.

Then Brooke did something I never expected.

She released a written statement to the family.

Not publicly.

Privately.

She admitted receiving company funds she had not earned through legitimate consulting.

She said Caleb authorized them.

She said I did not know.

And she wrote:

Claire did not destroy our family. We took advantage of her trust, and Mom encouraged us to believe we were entitled to things that belonged to her. I participated. That is my responsibility.

The family group chat exploded.

Diane called Brooke a traitor.

Brooke blocked her.

Caleb stayed silent.

For forty-eight hours, the story shifted completely.

Then Diane came to my retreat.

She never made it past reception.

Security notified Marcus before notifying me.

By the time I understood what was happening, Diane was in the parking area shouting at a security supervisor.

I watched through an interior camera feed.

She looked smaller than I remembered.

Still elegant.

Still furious.

But no longer powerful.

“Do you want police called?” Marcus asked.

“No.”

“She’s refusing to leave.”

“Tell her I won’t see her.”

Security delivered the message.

Diane shouted toward the building.

“Claire! You coward!”

My hands shook.

Then:

“You took my son!”

I whispered, “No.”

She couldn’t hear me.

“You took his company! His house! His child!”

My stomach tightened.

Sharp pain.

I froze.

Another pain came.

Marcus saw my face.

“What’s wrong?”

“I don’t know.”

The nurse entered quickly.

Outside, Diane was still shouting.

Inside, the nurse checked me.

“Claire, you’re having contractions.”

My blood went cold.

“It’s too early.”

“Not necessarily labor. But we’re calling Dr. Patel.”

Marcus stood.

“I’m getting Diane removed.”

Another contraction.

Stronger.

By the time security escorted Diane off the property, an ambulance was already pulling toward the medical entrance.

And as paramedics helped me onto the stretcher, one terrifying thought drowned out everything else.

My daughter wasn’t supposed to come yet.
