Chapter 5 - The Night the House Broke Open

Antonio was moving before the echo faded.

“Elena, lock this door.”

“Mia isn’t here!”

His blood froze.

“What?”

“She was with Rosa!”

Another gunshot.

Antonio drew the pistol beneath his jacket.

“Stay behind me.”

“No.”

“Elena—”

“That is my daughter.”

There was no fear in her voice now.

Only motherhood.

Antonio understood better than he wanted to.

They ran.

Emergency lights flickered along the corridor.

Downstairs, one security guard lay wounded near the service entrance.

Rosa crouched behind a stone column.

“Where is Mia?” Elena shouted.

Rosa pointed toward the kitchen.

“She ran when the lights went out!”

Elena sprinted.

Antonio followed.

The basement door stood open.

His stomach tightened.

A shadow moved.

Antonio raised his weapon.

“Don’t shoot!”

Marco emerged holding his laptop.

“They came through the utility tunnel.”

“What tunnel?”

“The old coal passage.”

Antonio cursed.

The house had been renovated dozens of times. He had forgotten the original service tunnel connecting the estate to a building behind it.

“Mia!” Elena screamed.

A tiny voice answered.

“Mommy!”

They found her under the basement stairs clutching Biscuit and the toy stethoscope.

Elena fell to her knees.

Antonio scanned the shadows.

Movement.

He fired once.

A man stumbled behind the boiler.

Antonio reached him before he could recover.

He slammed him against the wall.

“Who sent you?”

The intruder smiled through bloody teeth.

“You know.”

“Say it.”

“The man who should have been boss.”

Damen.

Antonio’s expression turned lethal.

The attacker bit down.

Antonio recognized the movement too late.

Poison capsule.

Seconds later, the man collapsed.

Elena stared.

“What kind of people do that?”

“My kind.”

“No.”

Antonio looked at her.

“Your enemies may be monsters. That doesn't mean you have to be.”

Something about those words stayed with him.

By dawn, the attackers were gone.

One guard had been killed.

Two were wounded.

Mia slept in Elena’s arms.

Marco finally broke the encryption on Daniel’s flash drive.

The files contained twenty years of financial records.

Payments to politicians.

Judges.

Police.

Shipping companies.

And one account that had quietly siphoned millions from Moretti businesses into offshore companies connected to Damen.

But money was only part of it.

There was an audio file.

Daniel Rossi’s voice.

“If Elena ever hears this, I’m sorry.”

Elena covered her mouth.

The recording continued.

“I found paperwork behind a wall at the Mercer site. Old records. Somebody was using construction projects to move weapons through city contracts.”

Antonio looked at Marco.

Daniel continued.

“I recognized the Moretti name. Then I found something about a truck crash five years ago.”

Antonio stopped breathing.

“Payment was made to a driver named Frank DeLuca. The instructions came from D.M.”

Damen Moretti.

“The target was supposed to be Antonio Moretti.”

Elena looked at Antonio.

“The truck was intended to strike Antonio’s car near the waterfront. But his wife and kid were using it instead.”

Antonio sat perfectly still.

Every muscle in his body felt carved from stone.

Daniel’s voice continued.

“After the boy died, someone changed the reports. The driver disappeared. Moretti never knew.”

Antonio whispered, “I wasn’t supposed to die in Chicago business warfare.”

Elena understood.

“You were supposed to die that day.”

“Yes.”

“But Lorenzo…”

“Was in my car.”

Daniel's recording revealed more.

Sofia had contacted him after discovering old correspondence connected to the truck.

Together they had been gathering proof.

Daniel hid the files.

Sofia hid the key.

Before Daniel could turn the evidence over to someone outside New York, he died.

Another accident.

Another convenient tragedy.

At the end of the recording, Daniel said something neither Antonio nor Elena expected.

“There’s another copy of everything in locker 417 at Grand Central. Sofia knows the location, but not the access phrase. The phrase is something the Moretti boy used to say.”

Antonio closed his eyes.

Lorenzo had said thousands of things.

Which one?

Marco paused the recording.

Then another file appeared.

A photograph.

Lorenzo sitting on Antonio’s shoulders at Coney Island.

Across the bottom, Daniel had written:

STARS TELL THEM WHERE HOME IS.

Antonio remembered the blue boat.

He remembered Lorenzo’s voice.

Boats don’t get lost because stars tell them where home is.

Antonio stood.

“That’s the phrase.”

Elena grabbed his arm.

“You’re not going alone.”

“You're not going at all.”

“My husband died for whatever is in that locker.”

“And I am trying to make sure you don’t.”

She stared into his eyes.

“Forty-eight hours, remember?”

Antonio had forgotten.

Twenty-nine remained.

He looked toward sleeping Mia.

“Stay here.”

Elena released him.

“Bring me the truth.”

Antonio nodded.

At Grand Central, Antonio and Marco reached locker 417 at 7:12 a.m.

The phrase opened a digital safe inside.

There was no ledger.

Only a phone.

Antonio turned it on.

One video file appeared.

Sofia Moretti filled the screen.

The date was two years earlier.

“Antonio,” she said, “if you are watching this, Damen knows.”

Antonio's blood chilled.

“He knows Daniel found the evidence. And he knows I survived long enough to identify the person who ordered the hit.”

She looked directly into the camera.

“But Damen isn’t the one who gave the final order.”

Antonio leaned closer.

Sofia spoke the name.

And Antonio felt the floor disappear beneath him.

It was someone he had trusted even more than Damen.

Someone who was currently inside his house—

May you like

with Elena and Mia.
