Chapter 10 - Daniel's Name

On what would have been Daniel's first birthday, I established the Daniel Vale Family Emergency Fund.
I almost didn't.
I worried people would accuse me of turning grief into publicity.
Then Mom asked one question.
“Would it help someone?”
“Yes.”
“Then stop worrying about people who aren't helping anyone.”
The fund provided emergency lodging, transportation, and childcare support to families dealing with pregnancy complications and infant loss.
No family should have to decide whether they could afford a hotel near a hospital.
No mother should sit alone because her partner couldn't afford a flight.
No parent should receive a hospital bill before they had finished grieving.
We launched quietly.
No gala.
No celebrity campaign.
No enormous photograph of me.
Just Daniel's name.
Within a year, the program had helped 312 families.
I read every thank-you letter.
One came from a father in Ohio.
His wife had been hospitalized unexpectedly.
The fund paid for his flight home from a work assignment.
He reached the hospital three hours before their daughter was born.
Everyone survived.
At the bottom he wrote:
Thank you for giving me the chance to be there.
I had to leave my office.
I sat in the stairwell and cried.
Those words contained everything Julian had failed to do.
But for the first time, that failure had produced something beyond pain.
It had produced presence for someone else.

And that felt like a way of carrying Daniel forward without being trapped inside the day he died.
