Chapter 5 - The Signature

The document surfaced forty-eight hours later.
My signature was on it.
I had never signed it.
My attorney didn't celebrate.
Neither did I.
Forgery was not a dramatic television twist.
It was evidence that had to be authenticated, examined, and handled correctly.
So we handled it correctly.
Gavin, meanwhile, tried to repair his reputation.
He told mutual friends that I had become “unstable.”
He claimed the baby shower had been an emotional breakdown.
Unfortunately for him, thirty-two people had watched what happened.
And several had photographed the documents displayed on the television.
Then June discovered something else.
Maren had posted a vague message online about “being manipulated by someone you love.”
Comments appeared instantly.
She deleted it within an hour.
But the damage was done.
People began asking questions.
I refused to participate.
No public war.
No social-media insults.
No vague quotes.
I had a baby coming.
That mattered more.
Three weeks later, at 2:17 in the morning, I woke with contractions.
My first thought was fear.
My second was clarity.
“June.”
She answered on the second ring.
Forty minutes later, I was in the hospital.
My mother arrived.
Lorraine came later and waited outside until I gave permission for her to enter.
Gavin learned I was in labor through the appropriate family channel.
For the first time since the shower, I saw him in person.
He stood in the hallway.
He looked exhausted.
“Tessa.”
I said nothing.
“I want to be here.”
“This isn't about us.”
“I know.”
And perhaps for the first time, he actually did.
Hours later, my daughter was born.
Seven pounds, two ounces.
Dark hair.
Tiny fists.
A furious cry that sounded like an argument with the entire universe.
I named her Evelyn Rose.
When the nurse placed her against my chest, every battle outside that room became temporarily irrelevant.
“Hi,” I whispered.
Her eyes opened.
And something inside me changed.
I no longer wanted revenge.
I wanted peace.
May you like
But peace, I would soon learn, sometimes required one last fight.
