Chapter 9 - The Thirty-Third Secret

The name was connected to one of Gavin's business associates.
A man named Preston Cole.
Preston had stood ten feet from me during the baby shower.
He had watched Gavin leave.
He had even hugged me afterward and said, “I'm sorry.”
Now his name appeared in records connected to Gavin’s money.
I turned everything over to counsel.
Maren did the same.
The resulting financial review uncovered business liabilities Gavin had hidden for years.
I finally understood something important.
His affair hadn't created his dishonesty.
It had exposed it.
The house had been valuable to him because he saw it as rescue.
My inheritance had been a safety net he believed he could seize.
Maren had been another future he could promise things to.
When one plan failed, he moved to another.
But Gavin eventually resurfaced.
And when he did, he called me.
Not Maren.
Me.
“I need to see Evelyn.”
“We'll follow the parenting arrangement.”
“Tessa, please.”
“Contact the appropriate people.”
“You always have to make everything official now.”
“Yes.”
There was silence.
Then he laughed bitterly.
“You've changed.”
“No, Gavin.”
I looked through the nursery doorway at my daughter.
“I learned.”
That night, another message arrived.
This one wasn't from Gavin.
It was from Preston.
You need to know what Gavin was planning before the shower.
May you like
And attached was a photograph I had never seen.
