Chapter 14 - THE MAID WHO REFUSED TO RUN

Daniel didn’t threaten my mother.

Not directly.

He didn’t need to.

“I’m sitting in her kitchen,” he said. “Lovely woman.”

My hands shook.

“Put her on.”

“She’s making tea.”

“Daniel.”

Luca took the phone.

“If you touch her—”

“Relax.”

Daniel sounded almost offended.

“No one is hurting anyone.”

“What do you want?”

“The ledger.”

“It’s gone.”

“No. You have copies.”

Luca looked at me.

Margaret had photographed every page before Elena arrived.

Daniel knew.

“What happens if you get them?”

“Then this ends.”

“Nothing ends after sixteen years.”

Daniel sighed.

“Luca, you were always dramatic.”

“And you were always a liar.”

Silence.

Then Daniel said:

“Two hours.”

He ended the call.

I grabbed my coat.

Luca stopped me.

“No.”

“That’s my mother.”

“And that’s exactly why you’re not going alone.”

“I didn’t say alone.”

“You’re not going at all.”

I stared.

“Try stopping me.”

He closed his eyes briefly.

“This is exhausting.”

“Imagine working for you.”

Frank arranged cars.

Rachel called federal investigators.

I objected.

“If Daniel sees police—”

“He probably expects them,” Rachel said. “And your mother is not legally his hostage unless he prevents her from leaving.”

That distinction felt meaningless.

We drove to Rockford.

My mother opened the door before we reached it.

“Claire?”

I nearly collapsed.

“Mom.”

I ran to her.

She looked confused.

“What is happening?”

“Where’s Daniel?”

“The nice lawyer?”

“Nice?”

“He fixed the kitchen cabinet.”

Of course he did.

“Where?”

“He left ten minutes ago.”

On the table sat an envelope.

Inside:

YOU WERE NEVER THE TARGET.

Underneath:

LUCA WAS.

I gave it to Luca.

His expression went cold.

Mom looked between us.

“Can somebody explain why my daughter’s employer arrived with enough security to invade Wisconsin?”

“We’re in Illinois,” I said automatically.

“You know what I mean.”

We explained the safe version.

Financial fraud.

Forged documents.

Daniel’s involvement.

Mom listened.

Then looked directly at Luca.

“Is my daughter in danger because of you?”

He didn’t hesitate.

“Yes.”

“Mom—”

Luca continued.

“And I’m sorry.”

Mom studied him.

“Do you care about her?”

“Mom.”

Silence.

Luca didn’t answer.

Which was somehow worse than answering.

My mother raised an eyebrow.

“I see.”

“You see nothing.”

“I had a stroke, Claire. I’m not blind.”

I wanted to dissolve into the floor.

Frank entered and mercifully interrupted.

“We found Daniel’s car.”

Abandoned two miles away.

Inside were documents.

Maps.

A burner phone.

And one handwritten list.

Seven names.

CROWN.

1. Peter Vale — deceased.

2. Lorenzo Moretti — deceased.

3. Charles Pierce — deceased.

4. Matteo Moretti.

5. Daniel Russo.

6. Adrian Vale.

7. Luca Moretti.

I stared.

“Luca?”

He looked genuinely shocked.

Adrian too.

“Why are they on it?”

Frank turned the page.

Beneath Luca:

SUCCESSOR — UNAWARE.

Beneath Adrian:

SUCCESSOR — UNAWARE.

Suddenly Crown made sense.

It wasn’t simply a conspiracy.

It was inheritance.

A secret financial structure passed from fathers to sons without the sons necessarily knowing.

Peter’s position passed to Adrian.

Lorenzo’s to Luca.

Charles Pierce’s perhaps to someone else.

Matteo and Daniel were living members.

And someone wanted Luca to accept his inherited role.

“What happens if he refuses?” I asked.

Frank handed me another page.

TERMINATION / ASSET LIQUIDATION.

“They destroy the companies,” Luca said.

That was the plan.

Frame me.

Frame Adrian.

Create federal pressure.

Crash Moretti holdings.

Force Luca to activate Crown authority.

Then he would become exactly what his father had prepared him to become.

Or lose everything.

I looked at him.

“What are you going to do?”

“Lose everything.”

Everyone stared.

Luca’s voice remained steady.

“I’m not joining it.”

For the first time since meeting him, I understood Luca Moretti completely.

People thought his power came from what he controlled.

They were wrong.

His power came from what he was willing to walk away from.

We returned to Chicago.

By evening Luca instructed his attorneys to cooperate fully with investigators.

Open books.

Open companies.

No hidden accounts.

No private settlement.

Matteo went furious.

“You’ll destroy the family.”

Luca looked at him.

“No.”

He opened the mansion gates.

“I’m ending what destroyed it.”

Matteo left.

And I stayed.

Not because Luca ordered me.

Not because I was fearless.

I was terrified.

I stayed because leaving would mean somebody else decided what fear could take from me.

At midnight, an email arrived from Daniel.

One attachment.

A photograph of the west wing.

And four words:

THE LAST LEDGER IS THERE.

Margaret stared.

“We searched everything.”

I looked at the photograph.

Marco’s old desk.

The floor.

Bookcases.

Then I noticed something.

The desk had five drawers.

In the actual room, it had four.

One was false.

Hidden.

I looked at Luca.

“We missed something.”

He stared toward the west wing.

And for the first time in sixteen years, Luca Moretti walked into his brother’s office not looking for betrayal.

He walked in looking for the truth.
