Chapter 15 - THE TRUTH BEHIND LUCA MORETTI

The hidden drawer contained no ledger.

It contained a cassette tape.

A photograph.

And a letter.

Luca recognized Marco’s handwriting immediately.

TO LUCA.

He didn’t touch it.

For almost a minute he simply stared.

“Open it,” I whispered.

His voice was rough.

“I don’t know if I want to.”

I understood.

Sixteen years of questions were safer than some answers.

Answers could not be changed.

He opened the letter.

Luca—

If you’re reading this, I either finally got brave enough to show you, or something went wrong.

Dad is hiding more than money.

Peter knows.

Matteo knows some of it.

Daniel knows more than he admits.

I don’t think Adrian knows anything.

And I don’t think you do either.

That’s why I’m writing this.

Crown was supposed to protect the family if something happened to Dad. Instead, it became a way for people to own pieces of us without anyone admitting it.

I found money going where it shouldn’t.

I confronted Peter.

He told me to stop.

I didn’t.

I’m sorry.

Most importantly: if something happens to me, don’t spend your life becoming Dad just to punish whoever did it.

You’re better than this house.

Get out.

—Marco

Luca stopped reading.

His hands trembled.

I had never seen that.

He lowered the letter.

“He knew.”

“He knew you.”

“No.”

Luca looked at me.

“He knew exactly what I would do.”

And Marco had been right.

Luca spent sixteen years becoming harder.

More controlled.

More feared.

Building walls because grief had convinced him walls were protection.

I touched his hand.

He looked down at mine.

Neither of us moved.

Then Margaret placed the cassette into an old player.

Static.

Marco’s voice.

Young.

Nervous.

“I’m recording this because Peter told me nobody would believe me.”

Luca closed his eyes.

The recording described Crown.

Lorenzo had created it with trusted allies during the expansion of Moretti businesses.

It allowed assets to move secretly in emergencies.

Peter Vale had quietly used Crown to siphon money.

When Marco discovered it, Peter claimed Lorenzo approved.

Marco didn’t believe him.

Then came the important part.

“Daniel said he’ll help me.”

Everyone looked at each other.

Marco continued.

“He says Peter is dangerous, but Matteo is worse because Matteo wants control if Dad ever steps down.”

The tape clicked.

Then Marco said:

“I’m meeting Daniel tonight.”

Luca opened his eyes.

The night Marco died.

Daniel had been the last person he planned to meet.

“Daniel lied,” Luca whispered.

The old attorney had claimed he barely knew what Marco investigated.

He had known everything.

The tape continued.

“If Daniel is telling the truth, he has the original Crown charter.”

There.

The document everyone wanted.

Not a ledger.

A charter.

Proof of ownership.

Authority.

And perhaps evidence of decades of fraud.

“Where?” I asked.

The tape answered.

“Dad keeps it where he keeps the thing he loves more than his family.”

Static.

Then silence.

Margaret frowned.

“What did Lorenzo love?”

“Money,” Adrian said.

“Power,” Frank suggested.

Luca stared at the desk.

“No.”

Everyone looked at him.

“His cars.”

Of course.

The old underground garage.

Lorenzo Moretti had collected vintage automobiles.

Most had been sold after his death.

One remained.

A black 1967 Ferrari.

Nobody drove it.

We went downstairs.

Luca opened the trunk.

Nothing.

Glove compartment.

Nothing.

Under seats.

Nothing.

Then I noticed the owner’s manual.

Too thick.

Inside the leather folder, beneath maintenance records, lay a sealed packet.

CROWN CHARTER.

Daniel Russo’s signature.

Peter Vale.

Lorenzo Moretti.

Charles Pierce.

Matteo Moretti.

And two others.

But one signature had been crossed out years earlier.

Peter Vale.

Below it was a handwritten amendment transferring his interest.

To:

ADRIAN VALE.

Another transferred Lorenzo’s.

To:

LUCA MORETTI.

Neither man had signed acceptance.

Meaning Crown could not legally activate their authority without consent.

“They need our signatures,” Adrian said.

Luca stared at the page.

“That’s what all this was.”

Pressure.

Collapse.

Scandal.

Force them to sign.

A phone rang.

Mine.

Unknown number.

I answered.

Daniel.

“Congratulations.”

I put it on speaker.

“You found it.”

Luca said, “Come back.”

Daniel laughed softly.

“You still think this is about money.”

“What is it about?”

“Survival.”

“Whose?”

“Everyone’s.”

Daniel’s voice became tired.

“Your father built something too large to walk away from. If you dismantle it publicly, people who were never supposed to be exposed will become exposed.”

“Then they should have chosen better businesses.”

“You sound like Marco.”

Luca went silent.

Daniel continued.

“He said almost the same thing.”

“What happened that night?”

For the first time, Daniel hesitated.

“I met him.”

“And?”

“He wanted to expose Peter.”

“Did you stop him?”

“I tried.”

“Did you hurt him?”

“No.”

The answer came quickly.

“Then who did?”

Long silence.

Finally:

“Matteo.”

Luca’s face emptied.

Daniel continued.

“Marco left our meeting. Matteo followed him.”

“Proof?”

“The original police report was changed.”

“By whom?”

“Your father.”

That revelation hit harder than everything else.

Lorenzo Moretti had protected his own brother after losing his son.

Luca whispered, “Why?”

“Because Matteo threatened to expose Crown and destroy the family.”

Daniel’s voice cracked.

“Your father chose the empire.”

Luca looked at Marco’s letter.

You’re better than this house.

Then Daniel said:

“Don’t make the same choice.”

The call ended.

And in Luca’s face, I saw the exact moment a sixteen-year-old ghost finally stopped controlling him.

He took the Crown charter.

Walked upstairs.

Placed it on his desk.

Then called federal investigators.

“I have something you need to see.”
