Chapter 9 - The Photograph

A photograph appeared online the next morning.

BILLIONAIRE HEIR'S SECRET TRIPLETS?

Cassidy went cold.

The photograph showed Declan carrying sleeping Grace while Lily and Emma held his hands.

The story spread quickly.

Reporters appeared outside Cassidy's office.

Then outside the preschool.

That crossed a line.

Declan arrived with security.

Cassidy confronted him.

“This is exactly what I feared.”

“I know.”

“They're children!”

“I know.”

“You brought the Hawthorne circus into their lives.”

His face tightened.

“And I'm going to get it out.”

He used every resource he had—not to control Cassidy, but to protect the girls.

He threatened no journalists.

He bought no silence.

Instead he obtained legal protection against harassment and moved his public meetings away from places the children visited.

Most importantly, he issued one statement:

My daughters are private citizens and children. Their mother has raised them with extraordinary love. Any failure to be present in their earlier lives belongs to the adults, never to them. Please leave them alone.

Cassidy read it three times.

He had not blamed her.

Not once.

That night, Declan arrived at her house.

“I’m sorry.”

“For what?”

“For making your fear reasonable five years ago.”

Cassidy looked at him.

Those were the words she had waited years to hear.

And they broke something open.

But before she could respond, Declan's phone rang.

His father's name appeared.

Charles had made another move.

This time, it could threaten everything.
