Chapter 5 - The Night Dominic Chose Differently

The old Dominic would have transformed the hospital into a fortress.
More armed men.
More locked doors.
More threats.
Clara convinced him that doing so would make Carlo’s next move predictable only in one way: it would become more desperate.
Instead, Dominic did something his enemies would never expect.
He trusted other people.
Hospital security moved Clara under another name.
Only Dr. Patel, Mateo, and Dominic knew her new room.
Lorenzo Moretti arrived after midnight.
Dominic met him privately.
For fifteen years, the two men had treated each other as potential enemies.
Tonight, Lorenzo looked tired.
“My cousin betrayed me.”
“My brother betrayed me.”
Lorenzo gave a humorless smile.
“Families.”
Dominic almost smiled back.
Almost.
“Carlo wants war,” Lorenzo said.
“Why?”
“Because peace isn’t profitable for him.”
Dominic understood.
Carlo and Anthony had been siphoning money from both organizations. Conflict would hide missing funds, eliminate witnesses, and weaken both leaders.
“What does he want now?”
“To survive.”
“And the files?”
“Insurance.”
Dominic leaned back.
“We end it without a war.”
Lorenzo studied him.
“Six months ago you would have demanded his head.”
“Six months ago I was an idiot.”
Lorenzo raised an eyebrow.
“Marriage trouble?”
“You have no idea.”
For the first time, the two men laughed.
It was brief.
But it changed the room.
They created a plan.
Anthony would be offered a deal.
Reduced consequences in exchange for contacting Carlo.
Anthony initially refused.
Then Dominic sat across from his brother.
“No threats,” Dominic said.
Anthony looked suspicious.
“What do you want?”
“The truth.”
“You already have it.”
“No. I have pieces.”
Dominic leaned forward.
“Why Serena?”
Anthony smiled.
“She was easy.”
Dominic’s jaw tightened.
“She wanted money and status. I wanted access to you.”
“So you introduced us.”
“Indirectly.”
“And the panic attacks? The emergencies?”
“Some were real. Most weren’t.”
Dominic thought of every dinner abandoned.
Every evening Clara had spent alone.
Anthony had created opportunities.
But Dominic had chosen to take them.
“You knew Clara was pregnant?”
“Not until Serena told me.”
“Would you have hurt the baby?”
Anthony looked away.
That was answer enough.
Dominic stood.
Anthony spoke.
“I can get Carlo to meet.”
Dominic turned.
“Why?”
“Because Carlo will kill me eventually.”
The meeting was arranged at an abandoned printing facility.
Carlo believed Anthony had escaped.
He arrived expecting the flash drive.
Instead, police investigators working through legitimate financial-crimes channels were already gathering evidence from records anonymously delivered by Lorenzo and Dominic.
Dominic had made another choice the old Dominic would never have made.
He would not solve this through bodies.
He would dismantle the conspiracy through evidence.
Carlo arrived.
He realized the trap almost immediately.
He attempted to flee.
He was arrested before reaching his vehicle.
Inside his car investigators found Clara’s stolen files, financial records, communications with Anthony, and evidence connecting his contractors to the SUV involved in Clara’s crash.
By sunrise, the conspiracy was finished.
Not dramatically.
Not with a street war.
With handcuffs.
Records.
Witnesses.
And two families deciding not to bury sons over the ambitions of two resentful men.
Dominic returned to Clara’s room.
She was awake.
“It’s over,” he said.
“Anthony?”
“Alive.”
She looked surprised.
“Carlo?”
“Arrested.”
“Also alive?”
“Yes.”
Clara smiled faintly.
“Who are you?”
Dominic laughed.
It was the first genuine laugh he had managed in days.
Then his expression became serious.
“I’m trying to figure that out.”
Clara reached for his hand.
For several minutes, they sat silently.
Then she whispered:
“I lost something.”
Dominic immediately looked at the monitors.
“What?”
“My wedding ring.”
Dominic understood.
“It’s safe.”
He removed a small clear bag from his pocket.
Inside was the ring.
Clara stared at it.
Dominic did not put it on her finger.
Instead, he placed the bag beside her.
“When you’re ready.”
Her eyes moved toward him.
“If you decide you never want to wear it again, I’ll understand.”
That sentence mattered more than Dominic realized.
For the first time in their marriage, he was giving Clara a choice.
Three days later, Clara was moved out of intensive care.
A week later, she could walk slowly with assistance.
Dominic was present for every step.
Not because he ordered the hospital to call him.
Because he was there.
Serena requested to see him.
Dominic refused twice.
The third time, Clara surprised him.
“Go.”
“Why?”
“Because unfinished things have a way of following people.”
Dominic met Serena in a private conference room.
She looked different without makeup and expensive clothing.
Smaller.
“You hate me,” she said.
“No.”
Serena looked surprised.
“I hate what I became around you.”
She lowered her eyes.
“I did love you.”
Dominic shook his head.
“You loved what I could give you.”
“And you?”
He considered the question.
“I loved being wanted.”
Serena cried.
“Anthony promised nobody would get hurt.”
“You still helped him deceive me.”
“I know.”
“And Clara nearly died.”
“I know.”
Dominic stood.
“I won’t protect you from the consequences.”
Serena nodded.
“But I won’t hurt you either.”
She looked up.
“That’s it?”
“That’s it.”
Dominic walked away.
It was the cleanest ending he had ever given anyone.
When he returned, Clara was asleep.
Her left hand rested outside the blanket.
The wedding ring was back on her finger.
Dominic stopped.
Hope moved through him.
Then he noticed an envelope beside her bed.
His name was written across it.
He opened it.
Inside were divorce papers.
Already signed by Clara.
Dominic stared at them.
His heart sank.
Clara opened her eyes.
“I put the ring back on because it still means something to me.”
Dominic looked at the papers.
“And these?”
“They mean something too.”
He waited.
Clara’s voice was quiet.
“I love you, Dominic.”
His eyes lifted.
“But I still don’t know if I can stay married to you.”
And for the first time, Dominic realized saving Clara’s life had been the easy part.
May you like
Winning back her trust might take years.
