Chapter 6 - The House Without a King

Clara returned to Lake Forest four weeks later.

Dominic did not assume she was returning to him.

That distinction mattered.

Her doctors wanted familiar surroundings, minimal stress, and continued monitoring throughout the pregnancy.

Dominic offered to move elsewhere.

Clara surprised him.

“No.”

“You want me here?”

“I want you involved with the baby.”

“That isn’t what I asked.”

“I know.”

Dominic nodded.

He did not push.

The enormous Valente estate changed.

For years, the house had revolved around Dominic.

Meetings happened when he wanted.

Dinner waited for him.

Staff adjusted around his schedule.

Now Dominic adjusted.

He moved business meetings away from the house.

He came home for dinner.

He attended prenatal appointments.

At the first ultrasound appointment after the accident, Dominic sat beside Clara.

The heartbeat filled the room.

Fast.

Tiny.

Alive.

Dominic’s eyes filled immediately.

Clara noticed.

“You’re crying.”

“No.”

“You absolutely are.”

Dominic wiped his cheek.

“Something in my eye.”

“In both eyes?”

He looked at her.

Clara laughed.

It was the first time he had heard that sound directed at him in years.

Dominic smiled.

The technician left briefly.

Dominic stared at the screen.

“I almost lost both of you without knowing either of you needed me.”

Clara touched his hand.

“You can’t spend the rest of your life punishing yourself.”

“I’m not.”

“Yes, you are.”

Dominic looked at her.

“I’m trying to remember.”

“There’s a difference between remembering and living inside your worst mistake.”

Dominic considered that.

“How did you become wiser than everyone I know?”

“I had five years of quiet time while my husband was never home.”

Dominic winced.

Clara smiled slightly.

“Too soon?”

“I deserved that.”

Their relationship rebuilt itself in inches.

Breakfast.

A walk through the gardens.

Ten minutes talking before bed.

Then twenty.

Dominic moved into a separate bedroom without being asked.

He never demanded physical affection.

He never asked Clara whether she had decided about the divorce papers.

He simply showed up.

Consistently.

Months passed.

Anthony accepted responsibility for financial crimes and conspiracy-related offenses through the legal process that followed the investigation.

The criminal empire Dominic had inherited began changing too.

Clara noticed.

“You sold the clubs.”

Dominic looked up from breakfast.

“Yes.”

“And the shipping interests?”

“The illegal ones.”

“Why?”

Dominic put down his coffee.

“Because I don’t want our child inheriting my enemies.”

Clara stared.

“You’re leaving?”

“Not overnight.”

Dominic leaned back.

“But I’m moving everything legitimate.”

“That could take years.”

“Then it takes years.”

“What about power?”

Dominic smiled faintly.

“I thought power meant making people afraid to say no.”

He looked toward her stomach.

“Turns out real power might be building a life where your child never has to be afraid of your name.”

Clara’s eyes filled.

That evening, she entered Dominic’s bedroom.

He looked up from a book.

“Everything okay?”

“Yes.”

She sat beside him.

Dominic waited.

“I tore up the divorce papers.”

He stared at her.

“When?”

“This morning.”

Dominic did not celebrate.

He did not reach for her.

“Are you sure?”

Clara smiled through tears.

“That question is why I’m sure.”

She leaned forward and kissed him.

Not passionately.

Not dramatically.

Just gently.

A beginning rather than an ending.

Dominic touched her cheek.

“I love you.”

Clara closed her eyes.

“I know.”

“No.”

He shook his head.

“I don’t think I ever said it when it mattered.”

She looked at him.

“I love you, Clara.”

Her forehead rested against his.

“I love you too.”

Three months later, Dominic woke at 2:14 a.m. to Clara shaking his shoulder.

“Dominic.”

He opened his eyes.

“What?”

“I think it’s time.”

He was instantly awake.

“Time?”

Clara stared at him.

“The baby.”

Dominic jumped out of bed so quickly that Clara began laughing.

“Why are you laughing?”

“You.”

“What about me?”

“You look terrified.”

“I am not terrified.”

“Dominic, you put your pants on backward.”

He looked down.

Clara laughed harder.

Twenty minutes later, they were in the car.

Dominic had planned everything.

Hospital bag.

Private entrance.

Doctor notified.

Security arranged.

Then Clara suddenly grabbed his arm.

“Dominic.”

He looked at her.

Her expression had changed.

“What?”

“Something’s wrong.”

The humor disappeared.

By the time they reached Northwestern, doctors were waiting.

Clara was rushed into examination.

Dominic followed until a nurse stopped him.

“Mr. Valente, wait here.”

“No.”

“Dominic.”

Clara called from the bed.

He looked at her.

“I’m scared.”

That was all it took.

He moved beside her.

“I’m here.”

Her fingers locked around his.

Hours passed.

The baby’s heart rate became unstable.

Doctors moved faster.

Dr. Patel appeared.

“We may need an emergency C-section.”

Dominic’s stomach dropped.

“Is she safe?”

“We’re taking every precaution.”

Clara looked at him.

“Stay.”

“I’m not going anywhere.”

The words were the same ones he had once spoken to Serena.

But now they meant something completely different.

Dominic stayed beside Clara until doctors took her into surgery.

Then he waited.

Not as a king.

Not as a boss.

As a husband.

Forty-seven minutes later, Dr. Patel appeared.

Dominic stood.

The doctor was smiling.

“Congratulations.”

Dominic forgot how to breathe.

“Clara?”

“She’s stable.”

“And the baby?”

Dr. Patel’s smile widened.

“A daughter.”

Dominic covered his face.

His knees almost failed him.

Minutes later, he entered the recovery room.

Clara looked exhausted.

In her arms was the smallest person Dominic had ever seen.

He approached.

Clara smiled.

“Meet your daughter.”

Dominic stared at the baby.

“She’s tiny.”

Clara laughed weakly.

“She’s a newborn, Dominic.”

“What if I drop her?”

“The terrifying Dominic Valente is afraid of a seven-pound baby?”

“Completely.”

Clara carefully transferred their daughter into his arms.

Dominic looked down.

The baby opened her eyes.

Something inside him broke open.

“Hi.”

His voice cracked.

Clara watched him cry without teasing him.

“What should we call her?” Dominic whispered.

Clara smiled.

“Hope.”

Dominic looked at her.

“Hope Valente?”

“After everything?”

Clara touched their daughter’s tiny hand.

“I think we earned a little hope.”

Dominic kissed Clara’s forehead.

Then the door opened.

Mateo stood there.

His expression was wrong.

Dominic immediately noticed.

“What happened?”

Mateo glanced at Clara.

“Can we talk outside?”

Dominic carefully returned Hope to Clara.

In the corridor, Mateo handed him an envelope.

“No return address.”

Dominic opened it.

Inside was a photograph of the Valente estate.

Taken that morning.

On the back was a message.

ANTHONY WASN’T THE ONLY ONE.

Dominic stared at it.

Then Mateo gave him something else.

A list of names.

One stood out.

A man Dominic had trusted for twenty years.

A man who had attended his wedding.

A man who knew where Clara and the baby would live.

Dominic looked through the window at his wife holding their newborn daughter.

He had spent months escaping his old life.

Now his old life had come looking for them.

And Dominic knew exactly what he had to do.

May you like

He had to end it permanently.
