Chapter 11 - The Secret Behind Bennett Capital

Claire read Daniel’s message three times.
You want answers? Come hear the whole truth.
Below it was an address.
A Bennett-owned office building near the river.
Adrian took the phone.
“No.”
Claire folded her arms.
“We’ve established that doesn’t work.”
“He wants you there.”
“Yes.”
“That is exactly why you’re not going.”
“He says he’ll surrender the financial records.”
“He’s lying.”
“Probably.”
“And you still want to go.”
“Yes.”
Adrian stared at her.
“Why?”
Claire’s voice softened.
“Because I need my life back.”
“You don’t get it from him.”
“No. But I may get the final pieces.”
Mara intervened.
“We can control the meeting.”
Adrian gave her a look.
Mara shrugged.
“She’s going whether we like it or not.”
Claire almost smiled.
Adrian did not.
Two hours later, Claire entered the commercial suite wearing a concealed microphone.
Adrian’s team occupied the floor above and below.
Federal investigators waited nearby.
Daniel sat alone inside what had once been a model apartment.
He looked exhausted.
For the first time in Claire’s memory, his suit was wrinkled.
“You came.”
“I said I wanted answers.”
He looked at her carefully.
“You look different.”
“I am.”
“Cross?”
“No.”
Daniel smiled bitterly.
“Of course you’d defend him.”
“I’m not defending anyone.”
“You barely know him.”
“I barely knew you.”
That hurt him.
Good.
Daniel poured himself a drink.
Claire remained standing.
“Why did you marry me?”
His hand stopped.
Straight to it.
No small talk.
He should have expected that.
“Because I loved you.”
“Try again.”
“I did.”
“Then why were there photographs of me taken for years?”
Daniel looked away.
“Security.”
“Whose?”
“Mine.”
“From me?”
“For you.”
Claire laughed.
“You tracked me.”
“I needed to know where you were.”
“That isn’t marriage.”
“You don’t understand the world I was operating in.”
“Then explain it.”
Daniel drank.
“My father left Bennett Capital drowning in debt.”
Claire knew part of that.
Not the scale.
“How much?”
“Forty million.”
Her eyes widened.
“When?”
“Before we married.”
Claire understood something.
Her financial models.
The restructuring.
The acquisitions she had designed.
“You used my work to save the company.”
Daniel looked at her.
“Yes.”
“You married me because of my work?”
“No.”
“Daniel.”
“At first?”
He looked away.
“I noticed you because of it.”
Claire felt physically cold.
They had met at a charity dinner.
Daniel had told her later he loved the way she laughed.
Now she remembered spending half that evening discussing distressed-company valuations with another guest.
“You researched me.”
“Yes.”
“My university work?”
“Yes.”
“My internships?”
“Yes.”
“And you thought I could help Bennett.”
“Yes.”
Claire closed her eyes.
“Did you ever love me?”
Daniel’s voice softened.
“Yes.”
She looked at him.
“I wish I believed you.”
He stepped closer.
“You think Cross loves you?”
“That is none of your concern.”
“He doesn’t love people. He owns them.”
“You’re describing yourself again.”
Daniel’s face tightened.
“He will destroy you.”
“No. You tried.”
Silence.
Claire continued.
“Why Northlake?”
Daniel turned away.
“Money.”
“For what?”
“To rebuild what we lost.”
“You were wealthy.”
“Not enough.”
Claire almost laughed.
There it was.
The sickness.
Not survival.
Not desperation.
Not fear.
Enough had become impossible.
“How much was enough?”
Daniel did not answer.
Claire looked around.
“Two hundred million?”
His eyes moved.
Confirmation.
“You stole from Cross.”
“Cross stole from everyone.”
“That was your justification?”
“He inherited billions built through crime.”
“And therefore you deserved some?”
“I created value.”
Claire stared at him.
“No. I created value.”
Daniel’s face hardened.
“That’s what this is about?”
“No.”
“You want credit?”
“I want truth.”
“You think spreadsheets built Bennett Capital?”
“Apparently enough of them did that you married me for mine.”
Daniel flinched.
Claire stepped closer.
“What is Rourke planning?”
He said nothing.
“Daniel.”
“Why should I tell you?”
“Because Thomas is in custody.”
That shocked him.
Claire saw it.
“Calder will be next.”
Still nothing.
“And Rachel gave us the drive.”
Daniel’s face drained.
“You’re lying.”
“No.”
He moved toward a table.
Claire noticed his hand.
Not toward a weapon.
Toward a phone.
“Don’t.”
He stopped.
“You have no idea what you’ve done.”
“Then tell me.”
Daniel looked suddenly frightened.
“Rourke doesn’t care about the money anymore.”
“What does he care about?”
“Cross.”
Adrian listened through Claire’s microphone.
His expression tightened.
Daniel continued.
“Rourke believes Adrian destroyed his family.”
“How?”
“Adrian’s father ordered Rourke’s brother killed years ago.”
Claire’s stomach turned.
“Adrian?”
“No. His father.”
“Then why blame Adrian?”
“Because Adrian inherited everything.”
“What is Rourke planning?”
Daniel stared at her.
“Tomorrow night.”
“Where?”
“The Cross Foundation gala.”
Claire knew the event.
Hundreds of guests.
Politicians.
Executives.
Press.
“What happens tomorrow night?”
Daniel whispered:
“He destroys Adrian publicly.”
“How?”
“Financial evidence. Old criminal records. Fabricated records mixed with real ones. He wants Cross Holdings seized.”
“And after that?”
Daniel looked toward Claire.
“Adrian won’t leave the building.”
Her blood went cold.
“Meaning?”
Daniel’s voice dropped.
“Rourke isn’t planning to let him.”
Claire immediately stepped backward.
The listening team moved.
Daniel suddenly grabbed her wrist.
“Wait.”
Claire froze.
“Come with me.”
“What?”
“We can leave.”
She stared at him in disbelief.
“After everything?”
“I can still fix this.”
“No.”
“Claire.”
“Let go.”
“We can start over.”
Her expression changed.
Nine years ago, that sentence might have saved him.
Now it sounded pathetic.
“There is no we.”
Daniel tightened his grip.
Security entered.
Adrian reached them first.
He pulled Daniel’s hand away from Claire.
Daniel looked at him with hatred.
“So this is what she replaced me with.”
Claire stepped between them.
“No.”
Both men looked at her.
She stared at Daniel.
“I did not replace you.”
Her voice was calm.
“I found myself.”
Daniel had no answer.
Federal agents entered behind them.
As they led him away, Daniel looked back.
“Claire.”
She waited.
He said the same words he had spoken in the law office.
“You’ll be fine.”
This time Claire smiled.
“I know.”
The door closed behind him.
For the first time in nine years, Daniel Bennett no longer had the final word.
But the next threat was already approaching.
The Cross Foundation gala began in twenty-nine hours.
And Vincent Rourke intended to turn it into Adrian’s last night as the most powerful man in Chicago.
May you like
Maybe his last night at all.
