Chapter 9 - The Night Claire Disappeared

Emergency power returned after eleven seconds.

It felt longer.

Adrian immediately checked Claire.

“You okay?”

“Yes.”

He did not release her arm.

Mara worked at the terminal.

“They didn’t breach the physical room. Only cameras and building systems.”

“How?”

“Thomas had executive-level access.”

“Revoke everything.”

“Already doing it.”

Claire read the message again.

Ask Cross how much one woman is worth.

She looked at Adrian.

“They think I’m leverage.”

“They’re wrong.”

“Are they?”

His expression hardened.

Claire did not look away.

“Adrian.”

“Not now.”

“That means yes.”

He stepped closer.

“This is not the time.”

“Then when?”

“When you are not standing inside a compromised building.”

Mara interrupted.

“We need to move.”

A secure convoy left through an underground exit twenty minutes later.

Claire sat in the center SUV with Adrian and Leo.

Rain streaked the windows.

Again.

Everything important in her life seemed to happen in the rain.

“Where are we going?” she asked.

“Different property.”

“Who knows it?”

“Me.”

“That’s reassuring.”

“Good.”

“I was being sarcastic.”

“I wasn’t.”

They drove north.

After thirty minutes, Adrian’s phone rang.

Mara, traveling in another vehicle.

“Route compromised.”

Adrian sat forward.

“How?”

“Vehicle ahead reported road obstruction.”

Leo spoke to the driver.

“Alternate.”

They changed routes.

Five minutes later, another call.

“Second route blocked.”

Claire felt the air inside the SUV change.

Adrian looked toward her.

“They know where we’re going.”

“No,” Claire said.

“They know where we are.”

Everyone went silent.

Adrian understood.

“Tracker.”

Leo began checking the vehicle.

Claire checked her phone.

Nothing.

Her handbag.

Nothing.

Then she remembered the suitcases.

One had remained with her since the diner.

“Stop.”

Adrian looked at her.

“My luggage.”

Leo searched.

Inside the lining of the smaller suitcase, he found a tracker.

Tiny.

Professional.

Claire stared at it.

Daniel.

Her suitcases had been at the condo before the divorce.

He could have planted it anytime.

Adrian crushed the device beneath his heel.

The convoy split.

Claire moved into a different vehicle.

For twenty minutes, nothing happened.

Then headlights appeared behind them.

Fast.

Too fast.

Leo spoke into his radio.

“Contact.”

Adrian reached for Claire.

“Down.”

The SUV accelerated.

Claire crouched below the window line.

No gunfire.

No dramatic collision.

Just speed.

Turns.

Traffic.

Calculated pursuit.

The driver entered a parking structure.

Changed levels.

Exited through another ramp.

The following vehicle missed the turn.

They escaped.

For now.

At 10:12 p.m., they reached a townhouse in Lincoln Park.

Unmarked.

Ordinary.

No visible guards.

Adrian entered first.

Then Leo.

Then Claire.

The door locked.

Claire leaned against the wall.

“I want this to stop.”

Adrian looked at her.

“I know.”

“No, you don’t.”

She pushed away from the wall.

“I want Daniel out of my head. I want to stop wondering if every memory is fake. I want to buy coffee without calculating whether I can afford food afterward.”

Her voice broke.

“I want one day that doesn’t belong to somebody else.”

Adrian said nothing.

Claire’s eyes filled.

“I had forty-three dollars four days ago, and somehow that was simpler than this.”

He approached slowly.

“You can still leave.”

She laughed bitterly.

“To where?”

“Anywhere.”

“They’ll follow me.”

“I can protect you.”

“That’s the problem.”

“What?”

“I don’t want my life to depend on another man deciding to protect me.”

The sentence landed between them.

Adrian nodded.

“You’re right.”

Claire looked surprised.

He continued.

“So don’t depend on me.”

“What?”

“Depend on yourself.”

She frowned.

“Helpful.”

“I’m serious.”

He placed a secure phone on the table.

“Your own access. Your own accounts. Your own attorney. Your own security contact independent of me.”

Claire stared.

“You arranged that?”

“This afternoon.”

“Why?”

“Because you kept asking whether I was controlling you.”

Her throat tightened.

“So I removed the question.”

She looked at him.

Daniel had responded to independence by reducing it.

Adrian responded by increasing it.

That difference frightened her almost as much as it moved her.

“Why are you doing this?”

His gaze held hers.

“You know why.”

“No.”

“Yes.”

“Say it.”

Adrian was silent.

For once, the man who commanded rooms seemed uncertain.

Finally:

“Because when I thought that car might reach us, I wasn’t thinking about seventy-four million dollars.”

Claire stopped breathing.

He continued.

“I wasn’t thinking about Thomas.”

Another step closer.

“I was thinking about you.”

Her heart beat too fast.

“Adrian.”

“I know this is badly timed.”

“That’s an understatement.”

“I’m not asking you for anything.”

“Good.”

“I’m telling you the truth.”

Claire looked away.

“I just got divorced.”

“I know.”

“My husband tried to destroy me.”

“I know.”

“I don’t trust my judgment.”

“I know.”

She looked back at him.

“And you’re dangerous.”

“Yes.”

At least he never lied about that.

Claire whispered, “Then why do I feel safer with you?”

His expression softened.

“Maybe because I don’t need you to be weak.”

The words broke something inside her.

Not painfully.

Like a lock opening.

Claire stepped closer.

For one second, she thought he might kiss her.

He did not.

Instead Adrian touched two fingers gently beneath her chin.

Then let his hand fall.

“Sleep.”

She almost laughed.

“That’s it?”

“That’s it.”

“Very disciplined.”

“Barely.”

He walked away.

Claire watched him disappear down the hallway.

At 1:40 a.m., she finally slept.

At 3:12 a.m., Leo opened her bedroom door.

Claire woke instantly.

“What?”

His face told her.

Something was wrong.

“Mr. Cross needs you downstairs.”

Claire ran.

The living room was empty.

No Adrian.

No Mara.

Only a secure phone lying on the table.

A message glowed on the screen.

WE HAVE CROSS.

Claire stared.

Leo said, “He left twenty minutes ago.”

“Why?”

“He received a call.”

“From whom?”

“Unknown.”

“Why would he go alone?”

Leo hesitated.

Claire understood before he answered.

“Because of me.”

The call had claimed Claire had been taken from the townhouse.

Thomas had manipulated security feeds again.

Adrian believed she was gone.

And he had walked into a trap to get her back.

Claire looked at the message.

For days, Adrian had insisted she was not expendable.

Now he had proven it.

But if she wanted him alive by morning, Claire would have to prove something too.

She was not a woman waiting to be rescued.

May you like

Not anymore.
