Chapter 15 - Celeste's Last Letter

Celeste wrote to me five years after the party.
I almost threw the letter away.
Instead, I opened it.
She was ill.
She did not ask me to visit.
She did not ask forgiveness.
For once, she did not excuse herself.
She wrote:
I spent my life believing survival justified cruelty. It does not. I took your childhood because I was afraid of losing my own security. Then I watched my son become someone who believed love meant control, because that was what I taught him.
I stopped reading.
Later, I continued.
Leaving your necklace was not enough. Keeping you alive was not enough. I should have taken you home.
That sentence mattered.
Not because it repaired anything.
Because it was finally true.
She died several months later.
I did not attend the funeral.
Adrian did.
I sent flowers without my name.
Gabriel asked why.
“I don’t know.”
“That’s allowed.”
I smiled.
“Therapy taught you that?”
“You taught me that.”
Life rarely gives perfect emotional conclusions.
Sometimes forgiveness comes.
Sometimes it doesn’t.
Sometimes understanding is enough.
I kept Celeste’s letter.
Not beside my parents’ letters.
In a separate drawer.
Some histories belong near your heart.
May you like
Others belong somewhere you can remember them without letting them define you.
