Chapter 17 - The Night the Necklace Broke Again

Ten years after Adrian’s welcome party, the clasp on my necklace broke.
There was no slap.
No shattered plate.
No terrified room.
I was gardening.
The pendant simply fell into the grass.
I stared at it.
Then started laughing.
Gabriel, now well into his seventies, looked up from the porch.
“What happened?”
“My necklace broke.”
His face went white.
“Again?”
“It’s a clasp, Dad.”
“That necklace has terrible timing.”
I laughed harder.
We took it to the same jeweler who restored it years earlier.
The jeweler offered to replace the chain entirely.
I agreed.
That surprised Gabriel.
“You sure?”
“Yes.”
The pendant mattered.
The chain did not.
That realization described my entire life.
For years, I had confused preservation with healing.
I thought keeping every piece unchanged honored the past.
But sometimes you keep what matters and replace what no longer works.
That evening, Gabriel and I walked beside the river where investigators once searched for me.
He stopped near the railing.
“I used to come here.”
“I know.”
“I thought you were dead.”
I took his hand.
“I’m here.”
“I know.”
He smiled.
Those two words contained twenty years of grief and ten years of healing.
I’m here.
I know.
May you like
Sometimes that is enough.
