Chapter 6 - The Secret Hidden Inside the Moretti Foundation

The bank opened at nine the next morning.
Dante arranged a private appointment at eight fifteen.
Sophia sat beside him inside a secure vault while a manager carried in a narrow metal box.
Thomas Bennett had rented it seventeen years earlier.
Inside were financial ledgers, photographs and a handwritten letter addressed to Sophia.
Her hands trembled as she opened it.
My little girl,
If you are reading this, then the world I tried to hide from you has finally found you.
Sophia stopped.
Dante turned away slightly, giving her privacy.
She continued.
Thomas explained everything.
He had started as an accountant for Carlo Moretti.
Carlo's businesses were complicated, some legitimate, others less so.
But the foundation had been Carlo’s attempt to build something his children could inherit without shame.
Vincent Rizzo discovered how easily money could disappear through construction invoices and shell charities.
Thomas found the evidence.
Carlo planned to remove Rizzo permanently from the organization and turn certain records over to federal investigators.
Before he could, Carlo died.
Thomas believed Rizzo had arranged it.
But Thomas never had proof.
So he copied everything.
Then disappeared.
The letter ended:
Sophia, never confuse power with evil or weakness with goodness. Judge people by what they choose when choosing costs them something.
Sophia lowered the letter.
Dante stared at the ledger.
“My father wanted out.”
“Apparently.”
“He never told me.”
“Maybe he didn't get the chance.”
Dante sat in silence.
For years, Carlo Moretti had existed in his son’s mind as a harsh, uncompromising patriarch.
Now there was evidence that the man had been trying to change the family’s future.
Thomas Bennett had died protecting that possibility.
Sophia touched Dante’s arm.
He looked down at her hand.
She almost removed it.
Instead, she left it there.
“We finish what they started.”
His gaze met hers.
“We?”
“Yes.”
“Sophia—”
“My father hid this for me.”
“To protect you.”
“And I’m tired of people deciding protection means making decisions for me.”
Dante slowly nodded.
“Fine.”
“Fine?”
“You’re stubborn.”
“You sound surprised.”
“I am learning.”
They spent the next several hours studying transactions.
One set of payments continued even after Rizzo had supposedly left the Moretti organization.
Someone inside the foundation had kept paying companies connected to him.
The signature authorizing them belonged to Damian Russo.
Dante’s chief financial officer.
A man who had attended Moretti family dinners for fifteen years.
Dante went very still.
“You trust him.”
“I did.”
Sophia knew that look.
Not anger.
Something worse.
Betrayal.
“Maybe his signature was copied.”
“Maybe.”
Dante clearly did not believe it.
That afternoon they returned to the estate separately.
Sophia entered first.
Damian Russo was waiting near her office.
Late forties.
Polished.
Friendly.
He smiled.
“Sophia.”
She forced herself to smile back.
“Mr. Russo.”
“Successful gala.”
“Eventually.”
He laughed.
“I heard about the blackout.”
His eyes drifted toward her purse.
Only for a moment.
But Sophia noticed.
“Terrifying thing.”
“Yes.”
“Anything stolen?”
There it was.
A question disguised as concern.
Sophia shook her head.
“Just my dignity.”
His smile widened.
“Well, fortunately, you've demonstrated you can survive losing that.”
Sophia's blood went cold.
He knew about the poster photograph.
Nobody outside security knew.
Damian walked away.
Sophia immediately called Dante.
“He knows.”
“Who?”
“Damian.”
Silence.
“What happened?”
She explained.
Dante’s voice changed.
“Do not leave your office.”
“Dante—”
“Lock the door.”
She did.
Three minutes later, the fire alarm sounded.
Sophia stared toward the hallway.
People began evacuating.
Her phone rang.
Dante.
“Stay inside.”
“The fire alarm—”
“False.”
Someone knocked.
“Sophia?”
Damian’s voice.
“Everyone is evacuating.”
She said nothing.
The handle moved.
Locked.
Another knock.
“Sophia?”
Her pulse climbed.
Then silence.
A minute later Dante appeared with Luca.
Damian was gone.
They searched his office.
Empty.
Computer wiped.
Files removed.
On the desk sat a photograph.
Sophia kissing the poster.
Across her face, someone had written:
She was never supposed to find out.
Dante stared at the photograph.
Whatever restraint he had carried disappeared.
Luca watched him carefully.
“What do you want done?”
Dante's answer was quiet.
“Find Damian.”
Sophia touched his shoulder.
“Alive.”
He looked at her.
She held his gaze.
“If we become them to defeat them, my father protected nothing.”
For several seconds Dante said nothing.
Then he nodded.
“Alive.”
It was the first time Sophia realized she had influence over Dante Moretti.
It was also the moment someone watching from the surveillance room realized the same thing.
And from that moment forward, Sophia stopped being merely inconvenient.
May you like
She became Dante Moretti’s weakness.
