Chapter 15 - Sophia Walked Away From the Moretti Estate

Dante found her by the front door.
Suitcase beside her.
Coat on.
His face became unreadable.
“Where are you going?”
“Home.”
“Why?”
Sophia had rehearsed the answer.
It disappeared when she saw him.
“I need my life back.”
His eyes lowered briefly.
“I see.”
“I love you.”
“That usually precedes something unpleasant.”
She almost smiled.
“Dante.”
He waited.
“I went from event planner to scandal, threats, safe houses and secret ledgers in less than two weeks.”
“I know.”
“I don't regret helping.”
He remained silent.
“But I need to know who Sophia Bennett is when she isn't standing beside Dante Moretti.”
The words hurt him.
She saw it.
Still, he nodded.
“Then go.”
She expected argument.
Control.
A driver blocking the gate.
Instead, Dante stepped aside.
Sophia almost wished he hadn't.
“That easy?”
“No.”
His voice was rough.
“But if I make you stay because losing you terrifies me, then Rizzo was right about me.”
Sophia's eyes filled.
Dante continued.
“I love you enough not to turn that into a cage.”
That nearly broke her.
She crossed the hallway and hugged him.
His arms closed around her.
Neither promised anything.
Promises would have made leaving impossible.
Sophia returned to her apartment.
For three days, life felt wonderfully ordinary.
She bought groceries.
Did laundry.
Ignored reporters.
Watched terrible television.
Then ordinary became lonely.
At work, the foundation board placed her on administrative leave until the investigation concluded.
Officially procedural.
Unofficially political.
Sophia accepted it.
Dante did not interfere.
That mattered.
He texted once each morning.
Are you safe?
Sophia answered.
Yes.
Nothing more.
On the fourth day, a package arrived.
Inside was a new coffee mug.
Printed across it:
PROFESSIONAL POSTER INSPECTOR
Sophia laughed so hard she cried.
No note.
None required.
Meanwhile Dante did something Chicago did not expect.
He began dismantling parts of the old Moretti structure.
Companies with questionable histories were sold.
Associates who resisted transparency lost contracts.
Independent auditors entered businesses that had never welcomed outsiders.
News reporters called it a calculated rebranding.
Luca knew better.
“Sophia?”
Dante ignored him.
“She did this.”
“No.”
Dante signed another document.
“She made me understand why it needed doing.”
Luca smiled.
“That sounded dangerously healthy.”
“Leave.”
The criminal cases grew.
Rizzo remained in custody.
Damian negotiated cooperation.
Elena resigned from every Moretti board and agreed to testify publicly.
The foundation slowly recovered.
Then the board scheduled a vote.
Whether Sophia Bennett would return as executive director of events.
Dante deliberately stayed away.
The vote passed unanimously.
Sophia received the call while standing in her kitchen.
“Executive director?”
“Yes,” the board chair said.
“With full control of public events.”
Sophia sat down.
“And Mr. Moretti?”
“He abstained.”
That affected her more than if he had forced the decision.
She returned to the estate the following Monday.
Not as Dante's protected employee.
Not as his weakness.
As a senior foundation director.
Dante stood in the lobby.
They stared at each other.
“Welcome back.”
“Thank you.”
Professional.
Careful.
Awful.
Sophia started walking past him.
“Sophia.”
She stopped.
Dante held out a folder.
Inside was a gala proposal.
She read the title.
THE THOMAS BENNETT TRANSPARENCY FUND
A new program supporting financial oversight for nonprofit organizations.
Sophia looked up.
“You named it after my father?”
“With your mother's permission.”
Her eyes burned.
“Dante…”
“There’s more.”
The fund would be independently controlled.
The Moretti family could donate.
They could not direct it.
Exactly the kind of system Thomas had tried to create.
Sophia closed the folder.
“You changed everything.”
“No.”
Dante's gaze remained steady.
“I started.”
Sophia moved closer.
“What happens now?”
“That depends.”
“On?”
“You.”
She smiled through tears.
“I hate that answer.”
“Why?”
“Because it's mature.”
“I'm trying something new.”
Sophia laughed.
Then she kissed him.
Soft.
Brief.
Real.
When she stepped back, Dante looked almost stunned.
“That was not professional.”
“No.”
“Good.”
For the first time, Sophia understood the difference between leaving someone and choosing them freely.
She had needed to walk away to discover that returning could be her decision.
Unfortunately, their quiet reunion would not remain private.
Because the biggest criminal trial Chicago had seen in years was approaching.
And Vincent Rizzo had one final strategy.

If he couldn't destroy Dante with money or fear, he would destroy his reputation in open court.
