Chapter 4 - Three Days

I did not sleep beside Mark that night.

I told him my back hurt and I needed the guest room.

He looked suspicious, but he nodded.

At 1:12 a.m., I heard him moving through the hallway.

At 1:26, the bathroom door opened.

At 1:41, his office door clicked.

I lay awake, staring into darkness.

Every instinct told me to leave the house immediately.

But Rebecca had warned me that sudden behavior might make Mark destroy evidence.

So I remained.

At 6:30 the next morning, Mark left for his workshop.

The moment his car disappeared, I called Rebecca.

“I need to get out.”

“You should.”

“I also think there’s evidence in his desk.”

“Don’t break into anything.”

“What if it belongs to us jointly?”

“Photograph what you can lawfully access.”

Mark’s office had always been considered private.

But the desk itself had never been locked until recently.

I found the key exactly where he always kept spare keys.

Inside the second drawer was a folder.

My name was written on it.

EMILY.

I opened it.

Insurance documents.

Copies of my driver’s license.

Bank statements.

Our mortgage paperwork.

Then a printed email.

From Daniel.

Subject: TIMING.

Mark,

Policy contestability period is over. If anything happens naturally, there shouldn’t be an issue.

Friday is still best.

Keep everything normal until then.

My eyes moved to the calendar.

Friday.

Three days away.

Below the email was a reservation.

Mountain Ridge Spa Resort.

Two nights.

Mark had booked it for us.

I remembered him mentioning a surprise trip weeks earlier.

“A chance to reconnect.”

My knees nearly gave out.

I photographed everything.

Then another page caught my attention.

A transfer authorization.

$600,000.

Scheduled to move from an account I didn’t recognize into another company controlled by Daniel.

Friday morning.

Suddenly the picture changed again.

Whatever they were planning involved money.

Lots of it.

I called Rebecca.

“I found something.”

After I explained, she said, “Leave the house.”

“What about evidence?”

“You have photographs. Leave.”

I packed one suitcase.

Important documents.

Jewelry.

Laptop.

Lottery ticket.

Then I drove to a hotel registered under Rebecca’s assistant’s name.

At noon, Mark called.

I did not answer.

He called again.

And again.

Then texted.

Where are you?

Emily?

Are you okay?

This isn’t funny.

Finally:

Come home.

I showed Rebecca.

“Don’t respond yet.”

At 3:00 p.m., Vanessa contacted me.

Can we meet?

Rebecca insisted the meeting happen in her office.

Vanessa arrived wearing sunglasses and a baseball cap.

She looked younger than I expected.

Maybe forty.

Beautiful.

Nervous.

When she saw me, she removed the sunglasses.

“I’m sorry.”

I said nothing.

Rebecca gestured toward a chair.

“Tell us everything.”

Vanessa took a shaky breath.

“I met Mark four years ago.”

Four.

Not three.

“He said he was separated.”

Of course.

“He said you lived together because of finances, but the marriage had ended.”

I folded my arms.

“When did you learn that was false?”

“About a year later.”

“And you stayed.”

“Yes.”

At least she didn’t lie.

“Why?”

“I was stupid.”

Rebecca interrupted gently.

“Focus on the financial scheme.”

Vanessa nodded.

“Mark told me Emily had inherited millions.”

“I didn’t.”

“I know that now.”

“He said she controlled everything. Said she refused to invest in his company. He told me the fake medical expenses were just a way to move money that already belonged to him.”

My stomach turned.

“You knew the bills were fake?”

“Some.”

“How many?”

She looked down.

“Most.”

The room became silent.

I wanted to scream.

Instead, I asked, “How much money?”

Vanessa whispered, “I don’t know exactly.”

“Guess.”

“Maybe eight hundred thousand.”

My mouth went dry.

Eight hundred thousand.

Rebecca remained calm.

“Where did it go?”

“Businesses. Accounts. Daniel. The condo.”

“And you?”

Vanessa nodded.

“Some went to me.”

I laughed bitterly.

“So I paid for your apartment.”

“I’m sorry.”

“Stop saying that.”

She flinched.

I leaned forward.

“Why are you helping me?”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because Mark changed.”

“When?”

“When he discovered your life insurance had passed the contestability period.”

I looked at Rebecca.

She was writing quickly.

Vanessa continued.

“I heard him talking to Daniel about the spa trip.”

“What about it?”

“They said something about making an accident look believable.”

My stomach dropped.

Rebecca stopped writing.

“What exactly?”

Vanessa swallowed.

“I don’t know details. Mark stopped talking when he noticed me.”

“Did you see any messages?”

“Yes.”

“Do you still have them?”

Vanessa pulled out her phone.

“I took screenshots.”

She handed it to Rebecca.

I watched Rebecca’s face.

Her expression changed.

“What?” I asked.

She turned the screen toward me.

A message from Daniel.

Friday. Mountain road. Weather forecast says rain. Better than waiting.

My chest tightened.

Another message.

Make sure she signs the transfer paperwork before you leave.

Another.

If this works, everything is clean.

I whispered, “They were planning to kill me.”

Rebecca held up a hand.

“We cannot make that legal conclusion yet.”

I looked at her.

“Rebecca.”

“I know what it looks like.”

Vanessa started crying.

“I should have told someone earlier.”

“Yes,” I said. “You should have.”

There was no comfort in my voice.

A knock sounded.

Rebecca’s assistant entered.

“There are two detectives here.”

We all stared at her.

Rebecca stood.

“Why?”

“They asked for Mrs. Carter.”

My heart stopped.

The detectives entered minutes later.

One was a woman named Detective Lena Morales.

The other was a broad-shouldered man named Detective Harris.

Morales sat across from me.

“Mrs. Carter, we need to ask you about your husband.”

“What happened?”

“Nothing yet.”

Yet.

That word frightened me.

She placed a photograph on the table.

It showed Mark leaving a pharmacy.

“Do you recognize this man?”

“My husband.”

“Yesterday?”

“Yes.”

Then she placed another photograph.

Daniel.

“His brother.”

Morales nodded.

“We’ve been investigating Daniel Carter for financial fraud.”

Rebecca leaned forward.

“For how long?”

“Seven months.”

My heart pounded.

Morales looked at me.

“Until yesterday, we believed Mark might simply be an associated business contact.”

She paused.

“Now we believe your husband may be involved.”

I almost laughed at how small that sounded.

“Involved?”

Morales studied me.

“Mrs. Carter, did your husband recently attempt to convince you to take a trip this Friday?”

The room went silent.

I nodded.

Morales exchanged a glance with Harris.

Then she said something that changed everything again.

“You cannot go home.”

“I already left.”

“Good.”

“Why?”

Morales lowered her voice.

“Because your husband has just reported you missing.”

I stared at her.

“What?”

“He told police you’ve been acting confused, paranoid, and emotionally unstable.”

Rebecca’s expression hardened.

Morales continued.

“He says you disappeared with medication you supposedly need.”

“I don’t take medication.”

“We know.”

My hands curled into fists.

“He’s trying to make me look crazy.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Morales looked directly at me.

“Because if something happens to you after a documented mental-health crisis, an accident becomes much easier to explain.”

My blood went cold.

Then Rebecca’s assistant rushed back into the room.

“Emily.”

She was holding her phone.

“There’s a man downstairs demanding to see you.”

“Mark?”

She shook her head.

“Daniel.”

Detective Morales stood.

And from the hallway came a shout.

“Emily! You need to hear the truth before they arrest the wrong person!”

That sentence was the beginning of the next betrayal.

Because Daniel had not come to protect Mark.

May you like

He had come to destroy him.
