Chapter 6 - The Wife Everyone Hated

By eight the next morning, my name was everywhere.

LOCAL WOMAN WINS FORTUNE, ABANDONS SICK HUSBAND.

The story spread from a small neighborhood Facebook page to local news sites within hours.

Someone had posted a photograph of Mark in a hospital bed.

He looked pale.

Fragile.

Heartbroken.

The caption read:

After nearly thirty years of marriage, Mark Carter says his wife disappeared days after discovering she had won a massive lottery prize.

Comments appeared by the hundreds.

Poor man.

Money changes people.

Imagine abandoning your husband while he’s sick.

She looks greedy.

I hope he gets half.

I stared at my phone until Rebecca gently took it away.

“Stop reading.”

“They think I’m a monster.”

“They don’t know the evidence.”

“Mark does.”

“That’s why he did this.”

Detective Morales agreed.

“He’s creating pressure.”

“For what?”

“To make you react.”

I laughed bitterly.

“Well, it’s working.”

Rebecca shook her head.

“No public statements yet.”

“But he’s lying.”

“And lies become useful when the liar grows confident.”

So I said nothing.

For forty-eight hours, Mark controlled the story.

He gave an interview from our front porch.

He wore a sweater I had bought him three Christmases earlier.

His voice trembled perfectly.

“I don’t care about the money,” he told the reporter. “I just want my wife back.”

I nearly threw my laptop across the room.

Then Mark added:

“Emily has been under tremendous emotional stress. I’m worried she may not be thinking clearly.”

There it was.

The unstable-wife narrative.

Comments exploded.

People praised him for being compassionate.

Then he produced “medical records.”

Documents supposedly showing I had suffered memory lapses, anxiety episodes, and financial confusion.

All fake.

But convincing enough for strangers.

Rebecca watched silently.

“He’s overplaying his hand.”

“How?”

“He’s producing documents we can disprove.”

The forensic accountant had already discovered that several clinics listed on Mark’s invoices did not exist.

One physician’s signature belonged to a doctor who had retired seven years earlier.

Another bill used the address of a dental office.

The secret LLC had received $912,000 originating from accounts connected to me.

The evidence was growing.

But then things became worse.

Vanessa disappeared.

She missed a scheduled meeting.

Her phone went straight to voicemail.

Detective Morales immediately became concerned.

“Did she say anything?”

“No.”

“Any threats?”

“She was terrified of Mark.”

Police checked her apartment.

Empty.

No luggage.

No phone.

Her car remained in the garage.

Then we learned Mark had left town.

His vehicle was spotted heading north.

Toward Mountain Ridge.

The same resort where he had planned to take me.

Morales looked at me.

“You stay here.”

“Do you think he has Vanessa?”

“We don’t know.”

The next six hours were unbearable.

Then my phone rang.

Vanessa.

I answered immediately.

“Where are you?”

Her voice was barely audible.

“Emily.”

“Vanessa?”

“He knows.”

“What?”

“He knows I gave you the screenshots.”

My blood went cold.

“Where are you?”

“I followed him.”

“Why would you do that?”

“Because I wanted proof.”

“Vanessa—”

“I’m at the resort.”

My heart stopped.

“Is Mark there?”

“Yes.”

“Leave.”

“I can’t.”

“What do you mean?”

“He saw me.”

The line went silent.

Then I heard a sound.

A door.

Footsteps.

Vanessa whispered, “He’s coming.”

“Hide.”

“I am.”

“Call the police.”

“I did.”

Another sound.

Closer.

Then Mark’s voice.

Distant.

“Vanessa?”

I covered my mouth.

“Vanessa, hang up.”

She didn’t.

I could hear her breathing.

Then Mark again.

“You really thought you could betray me?”

The phone suddenly went dead.

I screamed for Morales.

Within minutes, officers at Mountain Ridge were alerted.

Mark was found in the parking lot.

Vanessa was discovered locked inside a maintenance room.

Alive.

Terrified.

But unharmed.

Mark claimed it was a misunderstanding.

He said Vanessa had become obsessed with him.

He said she followed him.

He said she locked herself inside the room.

Then police searched his vehicle.

They found a folder.

Inside were documents transferring my property.

Fake psychiatric evaluations.

Copies of my identification.

And the envelope he believed contained my winning ticket.

Mark was arrested.

Not for everything.

Not yet.

But enough to hold him while the investigation continued.

I thought that would end the nightmare.

It didn’t.

Because during the search, detectives found something else.

A second phone.

On it were messages from Lauren Price.

The insurance broker.

She had survived her accident.

And after speaking with investigators, she revealed a secret none of us expected.

Mark had not invented this scheme himself.

Someone else had shown him exactly how to do it.

Someone who had been inside my family for decades.

When Detective Morales showed me the name, I stopped breathing.

My older sister.

Patricia.

And suddenly I understood why Mark had always known exactly where my inheritance, jewelry, retirement accounts, and family assets were located.

Someone I trusted even before I met my husband had been feeding him information.

The betrayal had started long before Vanessa.

Long before the fake illness.

Possibly before my wedding.

And Patricia was waiting downstairs.

May you like

She had come to explain why.
