Chapter 15 - The Moving Truck Returned

Eighteen months after the first moving truck appeared, another one pulled into the driveway.
I stood at the window and laughed.
Elena came beside me.
“You okay?”
“Perfect.”
This truck had permission.
We were moving furniture out while the floors were restored.
Mom arrived carrying coffee.
Trevor came to help.
Even Denise showed up.
The movers recognized the house from the old viral photographs.
One joked, “We’re allowed inside this time, right?”
I laughed.
“Yes.”
Mom raised her hand.
“Definitely don’t ask me.”
Everyone laughed.
That moment would have been impossible eighteen months earlier.
The same driveway.
The same porch.
The same family.
Different rules.
Different people.
During the renovation, we discovered Grandma’s height marks for Mom and Denise behind an old pantry frame.
Mom touched the pencil lines.
For several minutes, she said nothing.
Then she asked whether we could preserve them.
“Of course.”
Elena designed a glass panel to protect that section of wall.
When it was finished, Mom stood there staring at it.
“Thank you.”
That was when I understood something.
Protecting my ownership of the house had never required erasing everyone else’s memories from it.
Their memories belonged to them.
The deed belonged to me.
Both facts could coexist.
That evening, Elena and I sat on the porch.
“You’re finally living here,” she said.
“What was I doing before?”
“Guarding it.”
She was right.
I looked through the window at my family laughing in the kitchen.
The house no longer felt like a battlefield.
It felt like a home.
May you like
And soon, it would witness something Grandma had probably hoped to see.
