Chapter 11 - Christmas, One Year Later

“The shelter.”

Derek stared at me.

“You want Christmas at the shelter?”

“Part of it.”

The plan was simple.

Anyone who wanted to could volunteer Christmas morning.

Then we would have dinner at Mom and Dad’s new house.

Potluck.

No luxury catering.

No open bar.

No ice sculptures.

Maximum gift limit: $25.

Participation voluntary.

Nobody voted on anyone else’s behalf.

Christmas morning arrived cold and bright.

I walked into the shelter at 8:03.

Dad was already chopping vegetables.

Mom wore an apron.

Derek was washing trays.

Greg arrived wearing old sneakers.

I pointed at them.

“Learning?”

“Very funny.”

Aunt Linda arrived in rubber boots.

“Also learning?”

“Don’t push it.”

We laughed.

Not everyone came.

That was okay.

That was the entire point.

Choice.

At noon, we finished serving meals.

An older woman approached Mom and thanked her.

Mom hugged her.

I looked away because suddenly my eyes were burning.

Derek appeared beside me.

“You okay?”

“Dust.”

“There’s no dust.”

“Christmas dust.”

He nodded solemnly.

“Dangerous stuff.”

That evening, we gathered at my parents’ smaller home.

There were seventeen people.

The table didn’t match.

Someone burned rolls.

Greg forgot cranberry sauce.

The turkey was slightly dry.

It was perfect.

After dinner, Dad handed me a small box.

“We agreed twenty-five dollars.”

“It cost less.”

Inside was a brass house key mounted inside a tiny frame.

Below it was engraved:

YOUR HOME. YOUR RULES.

I laughed.

Then cried.

Then accused everyone of causing Christmas dust.

Mom hugged me.

“I’m proud of you.”

“For what?”

“For finally telling us no.”

That sentence stayed with me.

Sometimes the kindest thing you can do for a relationship is refuse to continue the version of it that is hurting you.

But our family still had one unfinished chapter.

Because after dinner, Derek stood.

He held an envelope.

May you like

And this time, when he said my name, the entire room became silent.
