Chapter 7 - The Envelope at My Door

Derek stood beneath my porch light holding an envelope.

“I’m not coming inside,” he said.

“Good.”

He almost smiled.

Then he handed it to me.

Inside was a cashier’s check.

$600.

“Greg?”

He nodded.

“First repayment.”

I looked at him.

He looked older.

Not physically, exactly.

More like someone had finally discovered adulthood was not a room other people prepared before you arrived.

“I sold the car.”

“I heard.”

“Melissa and the kids are still with her sister.”

“I’m sorry.”

“I earned it.”

That was the first time I heard Derek say those words.

No excuse.

No accusation.

No mention of Portugal.

He stared at the porch boards.

“I hated you for leaving.”

“I know.”

“Then I realized I hated you because when you stopped fixing everything, everyone could finally see what I’d done.”

I said nothing.

“I’m sorry, Elena.”

My throat tightened.

“You forged my name.”

“I know.”

“You used everyone’s trust in me.”

“I know.”

“You don’t get to repair that with one apology.”

“I know.”

That was enough for that night.

He left.

Months passed.

Payments continued.

Slowly.

Painfully.

Predictably.

Easter came.

Mom and Dad hosted.

Dad burned one tray of potatoes.

Aunt Linda brought salad.

Greg supplied drinks.

I brought exactly one pie.

Nobody asked me to coordinate anything.

It was the most relaxing family holiday I could remember.

Then Mom raised her glass.

“To Elena.”

I immediately shook my head.

“No speeches.”

Everyone laughed.

She ignored me.

“To Elena, who taught us something we apparently should have learned decades ago.”

Derek looked down.

Mom continued.

“Never vote with someone else’s wallet.”

Even Derek laughed.

It could have ended there.

Maybe it should have.

But viral family stories rarely end when everyone finally behaves sensibly.

Because six months later, Derek received a letter.

And suddenly, the Christmas disaster that had nearly destroyed us created an opportunity none of us saw coming.
