Chapter 12 - The Day Their Empire Began Falling

The arrests came at dawn.
Marcus had already been detained.
Additional executives followed.
Federal investigators executed search warrants at corporate offices and financial firms connected to the scheme.
Caldwell publicly denied knowingly participating in criminal activity and fought the allegations through counsel. Prosecutors, meanwhile, presented financial records and communications they said connected him to the fraudulent transactions.
I watched none of the television coverage.
Instead, I went to my parents' graves.
Two simple stones stood beside each other.
Jonathan Mercer.
Evelyn Mercer.
I placed white roses between them.
Not Victor's roses.
Mine.
“You were right,” I whispered.
Wind moved through the cemetery.
“You were both right.”
I sat between them.
“I wish you'd trusted me sooner.”
That was the hardest truth.
My parents loved me.
Deeply.
But love mixed with fear had made them protect me in ways that sometimes became cages.
Victor exploited those cages.
He convinced everyone that my heart made me weak.
It hadn't.
My heart was damaged.
There was a difference.
Before leaving, I touched each headstone.
“I'll finish it.”
The trial was scheduled four months later.
Victor refused every plea agreement.
Marcus negotiated.
Raymond Pike testified.
Caleb Marsh testified.
Dr. Warren testified.
And then prosecutors called me.
Victor watched me walk toward the witness stand.
For twenty-nine years, he had known me as a frightened girl.
May you like
He was about to meet me as the woman my mother knew I could become.
