Chapter 16 - I Sold the House He Tried to Steal

The realtor nearly dropped her tablet.

“You're certain?”

“Yes.”

“The property has been in your family for decades.”

“That doesn't mean it needs to stay that way.”

Rosa understood immediately.

“Your mother would approve.”

The mansion sold within three months.

I kept almost none of the furniture.

My father's chessboard.

My mother's sewing table.

A photograph from their twenty-fifth anniversary.

That was enough.

I also resigned from my insurance job.

Not because I wanted to stop investigating fraud.

Because I wanted to do it somewhere that mattered differently.

Hale Mercer Logistics needed rebuilding.

The board offered me the chairmanship.

I refused.

Then I surprised them.

“I'll take a temporary oversight role.”

One director frowned.

“You have no executive experience.”

“No.”

“You've never managed a logistics company.”

“No.”

“Then why should we trust you?”

I slid Victor's fraudulent invoices across the table.

“Because apparently experience didn't help the last people you trusted.”

Nobody objected after that.

We opened the books.

Every contract.

Every vendor.

Every executive expense.

Employees who had spent years afraid of Victor began talking.

The company recovered assets.

Fraudulent partnerships were terminated.

We created independent compliance oversight.

Most importantly, I separated my family's land from the company permanently.

No executive would ever again be able to use it as leverage.

One afternoon, Rosa entered my temporary office carrying an envelope.

“No return address.”

Inside was a photograph.

My parents.

Young.

Laughing.

Standing beside a lake.

On the back, my father's handwriting:

For Claire, when she's finally ready to choose her own life.

I stared at it.

“When did they write this?”

Rosa shook her head.

“I don't know.”

But underneath the photograph was another item.

A key.

Not brass.

Silver.

Attached to it was a tag.

Lake House.

I didn't know we owned a lake house.

Rosa smiled.

May you like

“Your mother did.”
