Chapter 12 - The Enemy at the Door

Union Station at midnight was almost beautiful enough to make them forget it was a trap.
Almost.
Octavio entered using a cane.
Mina walked beside him.
Gabriel remained out of sight.
Federal agents were farther away than Victor had demanded but closer than Victor knew.
Octavio wore a dark suit for the first time since the crash.
It hung differently on his thinner frame.
But strangers still moved aside when they saw him.
Power had a posture.
Even weakened, Octavio remembered his.
Mina wore jeans, boots and a dark coat.
“No scrubs?” he asked.
“I thought the occasion deserved variety.”
“Disappointing.”
She looked at him.
“You're making jokes before meeting the man who tried to kill you.”
“I learned from a nurse.”
They reached the Great Hall.
Victor stood alone beneath the clock.
No Sofia.
Octavio stopped twenty feet away.
“Where is she?”
Victor smiled sadly.
“You look terrible.”
“Where is Sofia?”
“Still impatient.”
Mina watched Victor’s hands.
Empty.
His coat hung naturally.
But that meant nothing.
Victor looked at her.
“So you're Mina.”
“We've met.”
“Not properly.”
“This feels improper enough.”
He smiled.
Then looked at Octavio.
“You were always attracted to people who challenge you.”
Mina saw Octavio tense.
“This isn't about her.”
“It became about her when she kept you alive.”
Victor's voice changed.
“The plan was simple. After the crash, doctors said you wouldn't wake. We waited.”
“You ordered the sedation.”
“Yes.”
Mina’s stomach tightened at the casual admission.
“You corrupted hospital records.”
“Yes.”
“You tried to frame me.”
Victor looked at her.
“Nothing personal.”
“That phrase rarely helps.”
Victor turned back to Octavio.
“I needed the key.”
“You had the decoy.”
“And spent three months discovering it.”
“Must have been frustrating.”
Victor laughed.
“There you are.”
For a moment, old friendship appeared between them.
Then disappeared.
“Why?” Octavio asked.
Victor's expression hardened.
“You really don't know?”
“Money?”
“Not money.”
“Power?”
“Not at first.”
“Then what?”
Victor stepped closer.
“For thirty years I built beside you.”
“Beside me.”
“No. Behind you.”
Octavio said nothing.
Victor continued.
“You got the name. Rain. Newspapers wrote about you. Politicians called you. Men crossed rooms to shake your hand.”
“You had everything I had.”
“I had what you allowed me to have.”
“There it is.”
Victor’s jaw tightened.
Octavio looked almost sad.
“You convinced yourself you were a prisoner in a kingdom you helped build.”
“I was.”
“No.”
Octavio shook his head.
“You were my brother.”
Victor's eyes flashed.
“And brothers don't live in shadows.”
For Mina, the motive became clear.
Not greed.
Resentment.
Years of comparison.
Years of believing every victory belonged to Octavio.
Victor created Black Harbor to build something that was his.
But he needed money.
Infrastructure.
Loyal people.
So he stole from Rain Consolidated.
Daniel discovered it.
Octavio was supposed to die before exposing him.
Everything after the crash became cleanup.
“Where is Sofia?” Octavio asked again.
Victor glanced at Mina.
“Safe.”
“Bring her.”
“Give me the ledger.”
Octavio almost smiled.
“You don't know me anymore.”
Victor frowned.
“If I had the ledger, I wouldn't bring it.”
“I know.”
Victor's face darkened.
“You gave it to the FBI.”
Octavio said nothing.
That was answer enough.
Victor laughed once.
“You.”
“Yes.”
“The great Octavio Rain cooperating with federal agents.”
“Yes.”
“Seven months asleep turned you into a coward.”
Octavio stepped closer despite the cane.
“No.”
His voice was quiet.
“It taught me the difference between winning and surviving.”
Victor stared.
Octavio continued.
“I spent my life believing fear was loyalty.”
Mina looked at him.
“I was wrong.”
Victor scoffed.
“Beautiful speech.”
“Where is my sister?”
Victor’s smile returned.
“Closer than you think.”
A woman appeared on the mezzanine.
Sofia.
Octavio froze.
“Sofia.”
She stood behind a railing.
No visible restraints.
No guards beside her.
Mina immediately noticed something strange.
Sofia did not look frightened.
She looked angry.
At Victor.
Then at Octavio.
She walked downstairs.
Victor did nothing.
When she reached Octavio, she slapped him.
The sound echoed.
Mina stared.
Octavio touched his cheek.
Sofia’s eyes filled with tears.
“Seven months.”
“Sofia—”
“Thirty years of your stupid pride nearly destroyed everyone.”
Then she threw her arms around him.
Octavio almost lost his balance.
Mina steadied him.
For the first time she saw Octavio cry.
Silently.
No drama.
Just a man holding his sister after believing she might be dead.
Victor watched.
Something changed in his face.
Maybe regret.
Maybe envy.
Then Gabriel’s voice echoed through the hall.
“Victor.”
Victor turned.
Federal agents emerged.
Victor smiled.
“I said no police.”
Octavio replied,
“They aren't here because of you.”
Victor frowned.
Agent Sloan approached.
“Victor Rane, you're under arrest for conspiracy, attempted murder, financial crimes and kidnapping.”
Victor backed away.
“You don't have enough.”
Sofia pulled a small recorder from her coat.
“Yes,” she said. “They do.”
Victor stared.
Sofia had been recording his confession.
For the first time, his confidence broke.
He looked at Octavio.
“You set me up.”
Octavio shook his head.
“No.”
He looked at Mina.
“She taught me to document things.”
Mina almost laughed.
Agents moved toward Victor.
He did not resist.
But before they reached him, he said one final thing.
“You think this ends with me?”
Octavio's expression changed.
Victor smiled.
“Black Harbor isn't mine anymore.”
“What does that mean?”
“It means I built something bigger than both of us.”
Agents took him away.
Octavio watched.
Sofia stood beside him.
Mina felt the victory slipping.
Because Victor had confessed to betrayal.
They had recovered Sofia.
They had the ledger.
Yet according to Victor, the organization he created had already moved beyond his control.
And before dawn, Gabriel received confirmation.
Black Harbor accounts were being emptied.
Files were disappearing.
People were leaving Chicago.
Someone else had taken command.
May you like
Someone Octavio had never seen coming.
