Chapter 4 - The Name on the White Coat

The pharmacy camera showed Mina Strand entering at 5:17 a.m.

Except Mina Strand had been standing beside Octavio Rain at 5:17 a.m.

The woman on the recording wore blue scrubs.

A gray hoodie.

Her hair was tied in a ponytail.

From behind, the resemblance was enough to fool anyone.

From the front, it was obvious she was someone else.

“Stop there,” Mina said.

Gabriel paused the security footage.

The woman turned briefly toward the camera.

Late twenties.

Dark hair.

Hospital mask covering half her face.

Mina leaned closer.

“I know her.”

“Name?”

“Lauren Pike. Pharmacy technician.”

Gabriel immediately called his team.

Within minutes they discovered Lauren had left the building through an employee entrance seventeen minutes earlier.

Her phone was off.

Her home address was empty.

And her personnel file contained another problem.

Three years earlier there had been no Lauren Pike employed by the hospital.

She had been hired four months after Octavio’s accident.

Mina stared at the date.

“That isn’t coincidence.”

Octavio sat partially elevated in bed while Dr. Ward examined him.

His recovery was progressing faster than anyone expected, but he remained profoundly weak.

He listened while Mina described what they had found.

“Pike,” he repeated.

The name meant nothing to him.

Gabriel returned carrying a tablet.

“The fake doctor carried identification naming him Nathan Crane. Fingerprints identified him.”

He looked at Octavio.

“Seth Danner.”

Octavio’s expression changed.

Mina noticed.

“You know him.”

“Know of.”

Gabriel explained.

“Seth Danner did private security work for several companies. Very expensive. Very discreet.”

“And?”

“He also worked for Victor Rane.”

The room became still.

Octavio looked away.

Mina understood something then.

Suspicion was easy when directed at strangers.

It was very different when the suspect had once been family.

“How long have you known Victor?” she asked.

Octavio took a slow breath.

“Thirty-two years.”

Since they were children.

“Did he have reason to want you dead?”

“No.”

Gabriel said quietly,

“He had thirty billion reasons.”

Mina looked at him.

Gabriel corrected himself.

“Not thirty billion dollars directly. Control. Contracts. Holdings. Influence.”

Octavio stared at him.

Gabriel didn’t back down.

“You were incapacitated. Victor became acting chairman of Rain Consolidated.”

“You think money…”

“I think power makes people discover motives they never knew they had.”

Octavio’s face closed.

Mina could see he did not want to believe it.

She also knew disbelief did not change evidence.

Dr. Ward finished the examination.

“His neurological responses are extraordinary.”

Octavio gave her a flat look.

She almost laughed.

“He’s also exhausted.”

“Everybody keeps saying that.”

His voice was stronger.

Mina raised an eyebrow.

“Because you are.”

Ward looked at Mina.

“I want to speak privately.”

They stepped into the hallway.

The neurologist lowered her voice.

“He told you he remembers hearing conversations?”

“Fragments.”

Ward looked disturbed.

“Mina, I need you to understand something. Awareness during prolonged disorders of consciousness is documented, but memory can be unreliable.”

“I know.”

“He could combine real sound with dreams.”

“I know.”

“And accusations based on those memories—”

“I haven’t accused anyone.”

Ward hesitated.

Mina watched her closely.

“You’re afraid.”

Helen Ward looked down the corridor.

Then she said,

“You were right about the sedation orders.”

Mina said nothing.

“Months ago, someone pressured me to increase his sedation.”

“Who?”

“A consultant.”

“Name.”

“Dr. Elias North.”

Mina frowned.

“I’ve never heard that name.”

“Because he wasn't from this hospital.”

“Where was he from?”

“He claimed to represent a rehabilitation institute affiliated with one of Mr. Rain’s foundations.”

“Claimed?”

Ward swallowed.

“Yesterday I called the institute.”

Mina waited.

“They've never employed anyone named Elias North.”

A chill moved through her.

“What did he look like?”

“Late forties. Silver hair. Expensive glasses. Very controlled.”

“Why did you agree to meet him?”

“He had authorization from Rain Consolidated.”

“Signed by whom?”

Ward looked through the glass into Octavio’s room.

“Victor Rane.”

That afternoon, federal agents confirmed Seth Danner’s death was not natural.

He had carried a capsule hidden beneath a dental crown.

Someone had planned for him never to be interrogated.

Whether he took it voluntarily or whether it had released accidentally remained uncertain.

Lauren Pike remained missing.

Hospital IT discovered someone had deleted portions of Octavio’s medication audit trail.

But deleting data was not the same as destroying it.

Backups existed.

And Mina knew where.

At 7:10 p.m., after being awake nearly thirty-eight hours, she sat in a conference room with Gabriel and a cybersecurity specialist.

The specialist recovered the archived records.

They found fifty-seven unauthorized alterations.

Forty-two involved sedation.

Nine involved access permissions.

Six involved blood-test requests.

Every alteration originated from one administrative account.

Martin Holloway.

The hospital CEO.

Gabriel looked toward Mina.

“Where is Holloway?”

Security checked.

His office was empty.

His car was gone.

His phone was off.

Octavio's private team sent people to his home.

Nobody there.

Another disappearance.

Mina rubbed her temples.

“This is bigger than Victor paying one assassin.”

Gabriel nodded.

“You don't infiltrate a major hospital for seven months without infrastructure.”

“Or help.”

Gabriel’s phone buzzed.

He looked at the screen.

“Victor wants to visit.”

Mina stared.

“Now?”

“He says he heard Octavio woke.”

“What are you going to tell him?”

Gabriel looked through the glass.

“That depends on Octavio.”

They entered the room.

Octavio listened.

Then gave a simple answer.

“Let him come.”

Mina frowned.

“You think that's safe?”

“No.”

“Then why?”

Octavio looked toward the city.

“Because if Victor tried to kill me…”

He paused.

“…he needs to see what failed.”

Two hours later, Victor Rane arrived.

He wore a charcoal suit.

No tie.

Silver touched his temples.

He looked exactly like the kind of man who could walk into a hospital boardroom and have everyone stand without being asked.

When he entered Room 1208, his eyes found Octavio.

For several seconds neither man spoke.

Then Victor smiled.

It looked genuine.

“My brother.”

He approached the bed.

Octavio watched him.

Victor’s eyes became wet.

“You stubborn bastard.”

He touched Octavio’s shoulder.

“I thought we lost you.”

Octavio looked at him.

“Not yet.”

Victor laughed quietly.

Then he noticed Mina.

The smile remained.

But something behind it shifted.

“You must be Nurse Strand.”

Mina felt Gabriel watching.

Victor extended his hand.

“I've heard you saved his life.”

Mina did not take it immediately.

“Which time?”

Victor’s smile weakened.

Only slightly.

Then he laughed again.

“Gabriel said you were sharp.”

“No,” Mina replied. “He didn’t.”

Victor's eyes held hers.

For one second, the room felt much colder.

Then Octavio spoke.

“Victor.”

His old friend turned.

Octavio asked the question everyone had been waiting for.

“Who is Elias North?”

Victor did not move.

Did not blink.

Did not answer.

But Mina saw something almost imperceptible happen.

His right hand tightened.

Just once.

And that tiny movement told her more than any confession could have.

May you like

Victor Rane knew exactly who Elias North was.
