Chapter 12 - The Woman Who Lied to Save Him

The blood belonged to a security guard.
Not Noah.
That was the first good news.
The guard survived.
That was the second.
There was no third.
Security footage showed two masked people entering through a service stairwell.
They used stolen credentials.
They knew exactly where Noah slept.
Evelyn blamed herself.
Vincent refused to let her.
“I left him.”
“You were twenty feet away.”
“I left the room.”
“You went to get water.”
“If I had stayed—”
“You might have been taken too.”
“I’m his mother!”
“And you’re human.”
She looked at him.
“This happened because of you.”
The words struck him.
She immediately regretted them.
Vincent nodded.
“I know.”
“No.”
Evelyn covered her face.
“That wasn’t fair.”
“It was partly true.”
She began crying.
“I don’t know how to do this anymore.”
Vincent held her.
Not as a lover.
As the only other person in the world who understood exactly what it meant to love Noah this much.
“We find him.”
“How?”
Vincent looked toward Luca.
“Someone always wants something.”
They reviewed cameras.
One detail.
The kidnappers took Noah alive without visible struggle.
Why?
Noah had fought Marco earlier.
This time, he walked willingly for several steps.
Evelyn noticed.
“He knew one of them.”
Faces covered.
Bodies.
One shorter.
One taller.
Vincent replayed.
Then Evelyn whispered, “Pause.”
A hand appeared.
Female.
A ring.
Evelyn knew it.
“My mother.”
Vincent stared.
“No.”
“That’s her wedding ring.”
They called Margaret.
Phone off.
Federal agents searched.
Gone.
Evelyn collapsed into a chair.
Vincent remembered the airfield.
Margaret beside Salvatore.
The account information.
Had the entire explanation been another lie?
Then a text arrived.
From Margaret.
Trust me one last time.
Location attached.
Abandoned church in Queens.
Federal agents wanted to surround it.
Vincent and Evelyn went in first under surveillance.
Inside, candlelight.
Margaret stood beside Noah.
Alive.
Unhurt.
Evelyn ran to him.
“Noah!”
He threw himself into her arms.
“Mom!”
Vincent searched the room.
“Where’s Salvatore?”
Margaret looked at him.
“Coming.”
Evelyn stared at her mother.
“You kidnapped him?”
“I removed him.”
“You hit a guard!”
“Not me.”
“Who?”
A man stepped from the shadows.
Raymond Costa.
Vincent reached for his weapon.
Costa raised empty hands.
“Easy.”
Evelyn backed away with Noah.
“You.”
Costa nodded.
“The hospital.”
“Yes.”
“You threatened me.”
“Yes.”
“Why are you helping us?”
Costa looked ashamed.
“Because that threat saved your life.”
Silence.
Evelyn stared.
“What?”
“Salvatore ordered me to kill you.”
Costa looked toward Vincent.
“And the baby.”
Vincent’s face became murderous.
Costa continued.
“Dominic paid me twice as much not to.”
“The hospital threat?”
“I needed you frightened enough to disappear.”
Evelyn shook her head.
“You showed me pictures of my family.”
“To make it convincing.”
“You said you’d kill them.”
“I know.”
She slapped him.
Hard.
Costa accepted it.
“You earned that.”
“Why come back now?”
“Salvatore believes I’m still loyal.”
Margaret answered.
“He thinks Raymond brought Noah here.”
Vincent understood.
“You’re setting a trap.”
“Yes.”
“No.”
Everyone looked at him.
Vincent continued.
“You don’t put Noah in the center of a trap.”
Margaret’s expression hardened.
“It’s already happening.”
Headlights appeared through stained-glass windows.
Costa looked outside.
“He’s here.”
Vincent cursed.
Agents moved into position.
Evelyn took Noah toward the rear.
Margaret stopped her.
“There’s a tunnel beneath the sacristy.”
“How do you know?”
“This church belonged to Dominic’s people thirty years ago.”
Of course.
Evelyn ran.
Vincent remained.
“No,” she said.
He looked at her.
“You come too.”
“I need to finish this.”
“We finish it together.”
Salvatore entered.
Alone.
Or appearing alone.
“Margaret.”
He saw Vincent.
His smile faded.
“Well.”
Vincent stepped forward.
“You keep surviving.”
Salvatore looked at Costa.
“And you keep disappointing me.”
Costa drew his weapon.
So did Salvatore.
Agents shouted outside.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Then Noah’s voice echoed from the hallway.
“Dad?”
Salvatore turned.
Vincent moved.
A shot fired.
Costa tackled Salvatore.
Agents flooded the church.
Another shot.
Then silence.
Salvatore lay on the floor, wounded but alive.
Costa had been hit.
Margaret screamed for help.
Vincent ran toward Noah.
Evelyn emerged from the hallway.
“We heard—”
“It’s over.”
Salvatore laughed from the floor.
Vincent turned.
His uncle looked up at him.
“You think prison ends this?”
“No.”
Vincent walked closer.
“Choosing not to become you ends it.”
Salvatore’s smile vanished.
Federal agents arrested him.
As he was carried out, dawn light appeared through the church windows.
Evelyn held Noah.
Vincent stood beside them.
Raymond Costa survived.
His testimony completed the case.
Hospital threat.
Antonio’s murder.
The order against Evelyn.
The kidnapping conspiracy.
Everything.
For the first time in seven years, Evelyn no longer needed a false name.
But freedom brought a question neither she nor Vincent had allowed themselves to ask.
What happened when survival was no longer the only goal?
Who were they without fear?
May you like
And was love still waiting beneath seven years of anger?
