Chapter 7 - The Price of a Son

Evelyn tried to run outside barefoot.
Vincent caught her at the stairs.
“Let me go!”
“Evelyn.”
“They took him!”
“I know.”
“Then move!”
“Running into the woods helps nobody.”
She hit his chest.
Once.
Again.
“You brought us here!”
Vincent absorbed it.
“You said we were safe!”
“I know.”
“You said—”
Her voice broke.
Vincent held her wrists gently.
“Listen to me.”
“No!”
“Listen.”
Something in his voice reached her.
“We get Noah back by thinking.”
Tears streamed down her face.
“I can’t lose him.”
“You won’t.”
“You don’t know that.”
Vincent looked directly into her eyes.
“No. I don’t.”
She stopped struggling.
“But whoever took him wants the ledger.”
“Yes.”
“So Noah is valuable alive.”
Evelyn closed her eyes.
The logic was horrible.
But correct.
Luca entered.
“We found Marco’s vehicle.”
“Where?”
“Abandoned.”
“Phones?”
“His is dead.”
Vincent thought.
Marco had worked for him twelve years.
Exactly the period Dominic mentioned.
Every schedule.
Every property.
Every weakness.
Marco knew all of it.
Including the lake house.
Evelyn opened her eyes.
“What do we do?”
“We wait for contact.”
Twenty-three minutes later, Vincent’s phone rang.
Marco.
“You disappoint me,” Vincent said.
Marco laughed.
“You should have listened to your grandfather.”
“Put Noah on.”
“Not yet.”
“Then the conversation ends.”
“You aren’t in a position—”
Vincent hung up.
Evelyn stared at him.
“Why would you do that?”
“He wants me desperate.”
“You are desperate.”
“He can’t know.”
The phone rang again.
Vincent waited three rings.
Answered.
A child’s voice.
“Mom?”
Evelyn grabbed the phone.
“Noah!”
“I’m okay.”
“Did they hurt you?”
“No.”
“Where are you?”
A man took the phone.
Marco.
“Enough.”
Evelyn’s entire body shook.
Vincent took the phone.
“You have proof he’s alive. Now terms.”
“The drive.”
“You know I can copy it.”
“Dominic encrypted certain files. We need the original key architecture.”
Vincent glanced at the computer.
Smart.
“What do I get?”
“The boy.”
“Where?”
“Midnight. Pier 46.”
“Who comes?”
“You.”
“No.”
“Vincent—”
“Evelyn comes too.”
She looked at him.
Marco paused.
“Why?”
“Because Noah won’t leave with me if he’s frightened.”
Not completely true.
But plausible.
“Fine. No security.”
“Obviously.”
“Midnight.”
The call ended.
Evelyn whispered, “We’re going.”
“Yes.”
“With the real drive?”
“No.”
“They’ll know.”
“Eventually.”
“We can’t gamble with Noah.”
Vincent looked at her.
“I’m not gambling.”
“What are you doing?”
“Ending this.”
They prepared.
Luca wanted to bring men.
Vincent refused.
Instead, he called someone Evelyn never expected.
The FBI.
She stared at him.
“You’re serious?”
“Dominic’s ledger contains federal crimes.”
“You’ll destroy your family.”
“My family is upstairs missing.”
The words silenced her.
For the first time, Evelyn realized something fundamental had changed.
Vincent was not choosing the Moretti name.
He was choosing Noah.
Agents arrived discreetly.
Dominic’s records gave them enough evidence to act.
But they needed the kidnapping exchange handled carefully.
At eleven fifty, Evelyn and Vincent arrived at the pier.
Wind ripped across the Hudson.
Noah stood twenty yards away beside Marco.
Another man waited in the shadows.
Salvatore Moretti.
Vincent stared at his uncle.
Salvatore smiled.
“You look like Dominic when you’re angry.”
“Release the boy.”
“Drive first.”
Vincent held it up.
Noah looked terrified but unharmed.
“Mom!”
Evelyn’s heart broke.
“I’m here, baby.”
Salvatore studied her.
“You were always more trouble than you were worth.”
Vincent stepped forward.
“Speak to her again and the deal ends.”
Salvatore laughed.
“You still love her.”
Vincent said nothing.
“That,” Salvatore continued, “was always your weakness.”
“No.”
Vincent looked at Noah.
“That was your mistake.”
He tossed the drive onto the pavement between them.
Marco moved toward it.
A red laser dot briefly appeared on Salvatore’s coat.
He noticed.
His smile vanished.
“Police?”
Vincent’s expression remained calm.
“Federal.”
Chaos erupted.
Agents shouted.
Marco grabbed Noah.
Evelyn screamed.
Vincent ran.
Marco pulled a weapon but Noah bit his hand.
Hard.
Marco cursed.
The boy broke free.
Vincent reached him.
A shot fired.
Evelyn froze.
Vincent fell to one knee.
“Vincent!”
He covered Noah with his body.
Agents tackled Marco.
Salvatore disappeared toward a warehouse.
Evelyn reached Vincent.
Blood darkened his shoulder.
Noah was crying.
“Dad!”
Everyone stopped.
Even Vincent.
Noah clung to him.
“Dad, get up!”
Vincent stared at the boy.
He had never heard the word directed at him.
Not once.
He smiled through the pain.
“That’s one way to tell me.”
Evelyn sobbed and laughed simultaneously.
Sirens approached.
Vincent was taken to the hospital.
The bullet passed through his shoulder.
Painful.
Not fatal.
Noah refused to leave his bedside.
At three in the morning, a laboratory email arrived.
Vincent opened it.
Probability of paternity:
99.9998%.
He handed the phone to Evelyn.
She already knew.
He already knew.
But seeing it made something permanent.
Vincent looked at Noah sleeping curled in the hospital chair.
“My son.”
Evelyn nodded.
“Your son.”
Vincent closed his eyes.
One tear escaped.
The first Evelyn had ever seen him shed.
Then an FBI agent entered.
“We have a problem.”
Vincent opened his eyes.
“Salvatore escaped.”
The room went quiet.
“And according to recovered communications,” the agent continued, “he has a second copy of part of Dominic’s ledger.”
Vincent sat up despite the pain.
“What does it contain?”
“A list.”
“What list?”
The agent looked toward Noah.
“Everyone Dominic secretly paid to protect Evelyn and the boy.”
Evelyn understood immediately.
Salvatore now knew every person who had helped them survive.
And if he reached them first, seven years of protection could become a trail of bodies.
The war was not over.
May you like
It had only changed sides.
