Chapter 2 - The Man With the Red Rose

Nobody moved.

Thomas stared at Adrian.

Elena stared harder.

“To you?” she whispered.

Adrian finally looked at her.

There was the smallest shift in his expression.

A warning.

Trust me.

Her mother recovered first.

“Surely we're misunderstanding.”

“No,” Adrian said.

One word.

Nothing more.

Thomas laughed softly.

“That's convenient.”

Adrian’s expression remained neutral.

Thomas turned to Elena.

“Your mother told me you were reconsidering.”

Elena’s stomach dropped.

“Reconsidering what?”

Thomas frowned.

“Our engagement.”

The ballroom disappeared.

Not literally.

But for Elena, the music and conversations became indistinct noise.

“My what?”

Her mother stepped in immediately.

“Don't make a scene.”

Elena turned.

“You told him we were engaged?”

“Potentially engaged.”

“There is no such thing.”

Her father sighed.

“Elena.”

That tone.

The one designed to make her feel thirteen years old.

“This is exactly why these conversations should happen privately.”

Thomas looked genuinely uncomfortable now.

“I was told you knew.”

“I didn't.”

He lowered the rose.

For the first time, Elena realized Thomas might not be the villain her family had positioned him to be.

He looked embarrassed.

Her mother did not.

“This could have solved a great many problems.”

“For whom?”

“Elena—”

“No. For whom?”

Adrian had not moved.

Yet his presence beside her was like a wall.

Her father glanced around at the guests.

“We will discuss this somewhere private.”

“No,” Elena said.

Her father blinked.

She had never refused him so simply.

“No?”

“You wanted to discuss my private life publicly when you thought I was alone.”

Her mother's face tightened.

“Elena.”

“So we can finish publicly.”

Then she felt Adrian’s fingers brush lightly against hers.

Not taking control.

Reminding her she still had it.

Thomas exhaled.

“I think I should leave.”

“Thomas,” Elena’s mother protested.

“No, Mrs. Whitmore.”

He handed the rose to a passing server.

“I wasn't aware Elena knew nothing about this.”

His eyes moved to Elena.

“I apologize.”

Elena nodded.

Thomas left.

Her mother watched him go as if millions of dollars had walked out with him.

Then she turned on Elena.

“Do you understand what you just embarrassed us in front of?”

Elena almost laughed.

Not who.

What.

A fortune.

A family connection.

Another arrangement.

Adrian spoke quietly.

“You're asking the wrong question.”

Her mother stared at him.

“Excuse me?”

“You should be asking why your daughter had to borrow a boyfriend to feel safe walking into her own family's event.”

Elena’s heart stopped.

Borrow.

The word hit too close.

Marcus heard it too.

His eyes narrowed.

“Borrow?”

Elena looked at Adrian.

Too late.

Her brother smiled.

“There it is.”

Her mother went completely still.

“What does he mean?”

Adrian did not answer.

Marcus stepped closer.

“This is fake, isn't it?”

The ballroom seemed to tilt.

Elena could lie.

She could invent another story.

She could run.

Instead, Adrian looked at Marcus.

“No.”

Elena turned.

Marcus laughed.

“You hesitated.”

“No,” Adrian repeated. “I chose my answer carefully.”

“And what's that answer?”

Adrian finally removed his hand from Elena’s back.

For one terrifying second, she thought he was ending the performance.

Instead, he took her hand properly.

“The arrangement may have begun tonight.”

Her breath caught.

“But my interest didn't.”

Even Marcus stopped smiling.

Elena could barely speak.

“What?”

Adrian looked at her.

Not the family.

Not the guests.

Her.

“I said I noticed you because you were intelligent.”

His thumb moved once across her knuckles.

“I didn't say I noticed you tonight.”

The room became unbearably warm.

Her mother interrupted.

“How touching.”

The contempt returned.

“But Elena works for you. Surely you understand how inappropriate this little drama appears.”

Adrian’s expression hardened.

“I understand exactly how it appears.”

“And you don't care?”

“No.”

Her father studied him.

“Men like you always care.”

Adrian looked at him.

“About Elena? Yes.”

Elena forgot how to breathe.

“About your approval? No.”

Her mother's face paled.

That should have ended it.

Instead, it started something worse.

Marcus pulled out his phone.

“You may not care about our approval, Vale, but perhaps your board will care about this.”

Elena’s stomach dropped.

“Marcus.”

“What?”

He smiled.

“I'm simply documenting a family celebration.”

“You wouldn't.”

“You chose to involve him.”

The camera rose.

Adrian did not react.

Marcus took the picture.

Elena and Adrian standing hand in hand beneath the chandelier.

Her family in the background.

Within seconds, Marcus looked down at the screen.

“Done.”

Elena stared at him.

“Where did you send that?”

Marcus smiled.

“Nowhere important.”

But Adrian was already reaching for his own phone.

A message had appeared.

Then another.

Then five.

His expression did not change.

That frightened Elena more than anger would have.

“What happened?” she asked.

Adrian turned the screen toward her.

A photograph from seconds earlier was already online.

A headline had been attached:

ADRIAN VALE'S SECRET WHITMORE ROMANCE — BUSINESS OR SOMETHING MORE?

Elena’s face drained.

“That was fast.”

“Too fast,” Adrian said.

He looked across the ballroom.

Not at Marcus.

At Elena’s father.

The older man looked away.

And Elena suddenly realized Adrian was no longer worried about gossip.

He had seen something else.

Something she hadn't.

“What is it?”

Adrian slipped his phone into his pocket.

“We're leaving.”

“Why?”

His eyes returned to hers.

“Because somebody here knew we were coming before I did.”

Elena frowned.

“That doesn't make sense.”

“No.”

Adrian glanced toward the ballroom entrance.

“It doesn't.”

Then he lowered his voice.

May you like

“And your family isn't the only reason I think tonight was arranged.”
