Chapter 4 - The Secret Adrian Never Intended to Tell Her

“Nothing.”
Elena stared at him.
The answer came too quickly.
“You just admitted you recognized it.”
“I recognize the accusation.”
“That isn't the same thing?”
“No.”
Adrian dismissed everyone from the conference room.
Daniel hesitated.
“Adrian—”
“Out.”
Minutes later they were alone.
Elena remained standing.
“Start talking.”
Adrian looked at the forged contract on the table.
“Ten years ago, your father and mine were business partners.”
Elena frowned.
“My father never mentioned your family.”
“I know.”
“Why?”
“Because the partnership ended badly.”
“How badly?”
“My father lost everything.”
Elena stopped.
Adrian continued.
“Vale Logistics was much smaller then. Your father wanted access to several properties my father controlled near the river. My father refused to sell.”
“What happened?”
“Documents appeared showing he had agreed.”
Elena stared at him.
“Forged documents.”
“Yes.”
The similarity was impossible to miss.
“What did your father do?”
“He fought it.”
“And?”
“He lost.”
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
“Six months later, he died.”
Elena’s anger softened.
“I didn't know.”
“You weren't supposed to.”
“Why?”
“Because his mistakes weren't yours.”
That sounded like Adrian.
Frustratingly honorable when she wanted a reason to hate him.
“What did you do?”
“I rebuilt the company.”
“And my father?”
“I investigated him.”
“For ten years?”
“Yes.”
Elena stepped back.
“So everything between us—”
“No.”
“You hired me because I'm his daughter?”
“No.”
“How can I believe that?”
Adrian crossed the room.
He stopped several feet away.
Because unlike her family, he apparently understood that closeness was something she should choose.
“You applied through a recruiting agency under the name Elena W.”
“You didn't know?”
“Not until three months after you started.”
“And you kept me?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because you were good at your job.”
“That's all?”
His eyes held hers.
“No.”
There it was again.
The unbearable honesty.
Elena looked away.
“Did my father ruin yours?”
“I don't know.”
“You just said—”
“I said documents connected him to it.”
“Do you believe he did?”
Adrian paused.
“I used to.”
“Used to?”
“Two years ago I found evidence suggesting someone else manipulated both companies.”
“Who?”
“I never proved it.”
Her phone buzzed again.
Another message.
ASK HIM ABOUT PROJECT MERIDIAN.
Elena showed Adrian.
His expression darkened.
“What is Meridian?”
“A development partnership your father proposed ten years ago.”
“Why would someone send me that?”
“Because Meridian connects everything.”
Adrian opened a secure file on his computer.
Maps.
Company records.
Transfers.
Old photographs.
Then Elena saw a familiar face.
Her uncle Richard.
Her mother's younger brother.
“What is Uncle Richard doing there?”
Adrian said nothing.
Elena enlarged the photograph.
Richard stood beside Adrian’s father outside a warehouse.
Date: eleven years earlier.
“My family told me Uncle Richard barely knew your father.”
“They lied.”
Elena’s phone rang.
This time it was Sophie.
She answered immediately.
“Elena?”
Her sister was crying.
“What happened?”
“Mom and Dad are fighting.”
“About what?”
“You.”
Elena closed her eyes.
“Of course.”
“No. Not like usual.”
Sophie lowered her voice.
“I heard Dad say Richard should've left you out of it.”
Elena looked at Adrian.
“What exactly did he say?”
“That this wasn't supposed to touch you.”
A pause.
“And Mom said, ‘It already has. Richard sent the photograph.’”
Elena's skin went cold.
“Sophie, lock your bedroom door.”
“Why?”
“Just do it.”
Adrian was already messaging security.
Then Sophie whispered something that changed everything.
“Elena, there’s someone here.”
“Who?”
“Uncle Richard.”
Adrian took Elena’s phone and put it on speaker.
“Sophie,” he said calmly. “Don't confront anyone. Stay where you are.”
Richard’s voice suddenly came through in the background.
“Sophie?”
The line disconnected.
Elena lunged for the phone.
“Sophie!”
Nothing.
Adrian was already moving.
“Car. Now.”
They reached the Whitmore estate fifteen minutes later.
No violence waited for them.
No shattered windows.
No physical danger.
Only something stranger.
The entire family sat in the library.
Sophie was unharmed.
Richard stood by the fireplace.
And Elena’s father looked twenty years older than he had at the gala.
“Elena,” he said.
She ignored him and went directly to Sophie.
“You okay?”
Sophie nodded.
“I'm fine.”
Elena turned toward Richard.
“You sent the messages.”
Richard smiled sadly.
“No.”
“Then who did?”
“Your mother.”
The room went silent.
Elena looked at her mother.
She did not deny it.
“You broke into my apartment?”
“No.”
“But you sent the photograph.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Her mother's composure finally collapsed.
“Because I needed you to ask questions.”
Elena stared.
“You threatened me to make me ask questions?”
“I knew if I told you directly, your father would stop me.”
Her father stood.
“Enough.”
“No,” Elena said.
The same word she had used at the gala.
Only now it carried no fear.
“Not enough.”
She looked at her mother.
“Tell me everything.”
Her mother opened a drawer.
Inside was a brown envelope.
She placed it on the table.
“I found this three weeks ago.”
Adrian stepped closer.
Elena opened it.
Bank records.
Property transfers.
A handwritten ledger.
And one photograph.
Adrian’s father.
Elena’s father.
Richard.
And a fourth man.
Elena recognized him immediately.
Daniel Reed.
Adrian’s CFO.
Except the photograph was taken eleven years ago.
Daniel had told Elena he had only joined Vale Holdings six years earlier.
She looked at Adrian.
His expression told her the same thought had already occurred to him.
Her mother whispered:
“Daniel Reed has been lying to both families for more than a decade.”
And Elena suddenly understood why someone had forged a document accusing her of betraying Adrian.
The traitor had needed Adrian looking at Elena.
May you like
So he would stop looking at the man standing beside him.
