Chapter 11 - The Forged Signature

The bank froze Whispering Pines accounts.
Rumors spread.
Newspapers suggested Abigail had defrauded investors.
For the first time, her reputation—not her ranch—was under attack.
She refused to panic.
"Numbers tell stories," she told Samuel. "Find this one."
They traced payments.
Every fraudulent transfer passed through the same bank clerk.
The clerk disappeared.
Caleb wanted detectives.
Abigail wanted patience.
Three weeks later, the clerk attempted to withdraw money in Omaha.
He was arrested.
He confessed.
Continental Western had paid him.
The scandal reversed overnight.
Instead of destroying Abigail, the scheme made her famous.
Newspapers across the territory told the story of the frontier businesswoman who had exposed railroad corruption.
Customers arrived simply to meet her.
Abigail hated the attention.
Caleb loved teasing her.
"Mountain of a woman," he read from an old Chicago clipping.
Abigail snatched it.
"Where did you find that?"
"Your aunt mailed it."
"I'll poison her."
"No, you won't."
"No. But I'll consider it while baking."
Then Caleb handed her another letter.
From Chicago.
Her aunt was ill.
And wanted Abigail home.
Abigail stared at the city name.
She had spent years escaping Chicago.
Now she had to return.
And she would return not as the woman Chicago had mocked.

She would return as Abigail Thornton, one of the most successful entrepreneurs in Dakota Territory.
