Chapter 6 - The Night Whispering Pines Fought Back

Nobody slept.

Caleb doubled the watch.

Abigail refused to hide.

"If I hide, Caldwell wins without firing another shot."

They strengthened doors, established night patrols, and moved families closer to the central buildings.

Then Abigail did something Caldwell hadn't anticipated.

She invited the entire valley to dinner.

Nearly two hundred people came.

Ranchers.

Freighters.

Widows.

Merchants.

Farmers.

Abigail stood before them.

"This isn't about Caleb's ranch anymore."

She held Caldwell's threatening note.

"It's about whether one man owns everyone else's future."

No speeches followed.

People simply began volunteering.

Timber.

Horses.

Labor.

Seed.

Information.

Caldwell had spent years building power through fear.

Abigail built hers through food and trust.

The difference became obvious when Caldwell's grain warehouse mysteriously caught fire.

Abigail immediately sent wagons to help extinguish it.

Caleb stared at her.

"Why?"

"Because we're not him."

They saved half the warehouse.

Caldwell watched Abigail carrying water alongside his own workers.

For the first time, he seemed confused.

Two days later, one of Caldwell's employees arrived secretly.

He carried ledgers.

Proof of bribery.

Fraud.

Illegal land seizures.

And payments connected to the fire at Whispering Pines.

The territorial marshal was notified.

But Caldwell learned of the betrayal.

He fled south.

Taking the ledgers' witness with him.

Caleb saddled his horse.

Abigail stopped him.

"You're not going alone."

"You aren't coming."

"Interesting."

"Abigail—"

"Which part of our relationship suggested I follow orders?"

Caleb sighed.

An hour later, six riders left Whispering Pines.

The chase had begun.

And somewhere beyond Widow's Cut, Josiah Caldwell was preparing one final trap.
