Chapter 4 - The Marriage Nobody Wanted

Daniel killed the lights.

“Back exit.”

Emma did not argue.

Sophia grabbed the files.

Claire stood frozen.

Daniel took her arm.

“If Richard knows you’re here, we have minutes.”

They left through a service tunnel leading toward the river.

Behind them, glass shattered.

Emma heard footsteps upstairs.

The threat was real.

No longer inheritance paperwork.

No longer mysterious messages.

Someone was willing to hurt people.

Daniel led them to an underground garage where another vehicle waited.

Sophia stared.

“You planned escape routes?”

Daniel started the engine.

“I’ve spent fifteen years staying alive.”

Emma climbed into the passenger seat.

Claire sat behind her.

“Where do we go?”

Daniel looked at Emma.

“Somewhere Richard doesn’t know.”

Twenty minutes later, they entered an abandoned Carter family estate outside the city.

Emma had not been there since she was twelve.

Arthur had closed it after Robert’s death.

Seeing the house again brought back memories.

Summer afternoons.

Her grandfather teaching her chess.

Robert lifting her onto his shoulders.

A teenage Emma believing adults were permanent.

Claire stopped in the foyer.

“My father lived here?”

Emma looked at her.

“Yes.”

Claire touched an old photograph of Robert.

Tears filled her eyes.

“He has my eyes.”

Emma nodded.

“You look like him.”

Claire cried then.

Quietly.

Not dramatically.

Twenty-eight years of identity collapsing in a single room.

Emma stayed with her.

For the first time, inheritance did not matter.

They were family.

Sophia and Daniel searched the house for anything Arthur might have hidden.

Near midnight, Daniel found a safe behind Robert’s old bedroom wall.

Emma knew the combination.

Arthur’s birthday.

Inside were documents.

A video recording.

And another letter.

Emma played the recording.

Arthur appeared on screen.

Older.

Sicker.

But unmistakably himself.

“Emma,” he began, “if you’re watching this, then you’ve found Claire.”

Claire covered her mouth.

Arthur continued.

“And if Claire is watching, I owe you an apology no amount of money can repair.”

Claire cried silently.

“I knew Robert was your father. I discovered the truth after his death. Richard Mercer had already taken you and disappeared. By the time I found you, you were five years old and believed Richard was your father.”

Claire whispered, “Why didn’t you tell me?”

Arthur seemed almost to answer.

“I wanted to bring you home. But Richard threatened Emma.”

Emma froze.

Arthur continued.

“He promised that if I exposed him, he would destroy both of Robert’s remaining heirs.”

Emma stared.

Both.

Her.

Claire.

“So I waited,” Arthur said. “Too long.”

He explained Richard’s plan.

For decades, Mercer had manipulated Carter companies, siphoning money through shell corporations.

Robert discovered it.

Mercer killed him.

Daniel’s father later discovered similar theft.

Mercer destroyed him financially.

Arthur eventually uncovered enough evidence to remove Mercer quietly from Carter Holdings, but not enough to convict him without endangering Claire.

Then Arthur became sick.

He knew time was running out.

“So I created the marriage clause,” Arthur said.

Emma leaned closer.

Why?

“The seven-day condition forces every interested party to reveal themselves quickly.”

Daniel understood first.

“A trap.”

Arthur continued.

“Richard will not wait. He will push Claire toward his chosen husband. He will attempt to push Emma toward another.”

Emma whispered, “Daniel?”

Daniel shook his head.

Arthur answered.

“Daniel Hale is not my chosen husband for Emma.”

Emma glanced toward him.

Something strange moved through her chest.

Arthur continued.

“I trust Daniel. But Emma must choose for herself.”

Daniel looked away.

“If Emma marries someone Richard controls, Richard gains influence over her voting rights through emergency marital provisions hidden in the Carter family trust. If Claire marries his agent, he can challenge the estate through her.”

Claire whispered, “Michael.”

Arthur nodded in the recording as though he could hear.

“Richard believes he needs only one of you.”

Emma understood.

The seven-day will had drawn him out.

Every move Richard made created evidence.

Arthur smiled weakly.

“My girls, I am sorry my last lesson had to be painful.”

The recording ended.

Emma sat in silence.

Then Sophia spoke.

“The deadline still exists.”

Emma looked at her.

“What?”

“The will is still valid. Arthur designed a trap, but legally, Emma still needs to marry.”

Claire added, “So do I if I want standing against Richard.”

Emma rubbed her forehead.

“This family is exhausting.”

For the first time all night, Daniel smiled.

Emma looked at him.

“What?”

“Nothing.”

“You’re laughing at me.”

“I wouldn’t dare.”

She almost smiled back.

Then Sophia asked the unavoidable question.

“So who do you marry?”

Silence returned.

Emma looked at Daniel.

Daniel looked away.

Claire noticed.

“Oh.”

Emma frowned.

“Oh what?”

Claire wiped her tears.

“Nothing.”

“Claire.”

“I’ve known you six hours and even I can see it.”

“See what?”

Daniel interrupted.

“Claire.”

She raised her hands.

“Fine.”

Emma’s cheeks warmed.

“This is ridiculous.”

Sophia grinned.

“Is it?”

Emma stood.

“I’m not marrying Daniel just because Grandpa trusted him.”

Daniel’s expression became serious.

“Good.”

That surprised her.

Emma turned.

“Good?”

“I won’t marry you for money.”

“I wasn’t asking.”

“I know.”

“That sounded like rejection.”

“It wasn’t.”

Claire quietly moved farther away.

Sophia followed.

Emma noticed but ignored them.

Daniel walked toward the fireplace.

“If we marry because Arthur engineered this situation, then Richard still wins something.”

“What?”

“Our choice.”

Emma studied him.

“You’ve spent five years investigating my family.”

“Yes.”

“You lied about your identity.”

“To protect myself.”

“You knew my grandfather.”

“Yes.”

“You knew about the condition before I did.”

“Not the details.”

“And somehow I’m supposed to trust you?”

“No.”

The answer stunned her.

Daniel continued.

“You should verify everything I’ve told you.”

Emma’s anger softened.

“What if I don’t have time?”

“Then lose the inheritance.”

“Five hundred million dollars?”

“If the alternative is marrying someone you don’t trust, yes.”

Emma stared.

Every person around her wanted something.

Richard wanted control.

Michael wanted access.

The family wanted wealth.

Even Arthur had wanted to force events.

Daniel was the only man telling her to walk away.

“Why are you helping me?” she asked.

Daniel looked toward Robert’s photograph.

“Because your grandfather saved my mother.”

“That’s not the whole reason.”

“No.”

“What’s the rest?”

Daniel hesitated.

“I met you once.”

Emma frowned.

“When?”

“You were sixteen.”

“I would remember.”

“You didn’t see me.”

He explained.

After Daniel’s mother had entered hiding, Arthur secretly arranged a meeting at the Carter estate.

Daniel had been seventeen.

Emma had arrived unexpectedly.

Daniel watched from an upstairs window as Emma sat beside Arthur’s sick dog for two hours because the animal was frightened during a thunderstorm.

“You stayed until the storm ended,” Daniel said.

Emma smiled faintly.

“Max.”

“I spent most of my life believing every Carter was cruel.”

“And a dog changed your mind?”

“You did.”

Emma’s expression softened.

Daniel stepped closer.

“I don’t know when protecting Arthur’s granddaughter became protecting you.”

Emma’s breath caught.

“But it did.”

Neither spoke.

Then Claire entered.

“Sorry.”

Emma jumped slightly.

Claire held up a phone.

“We have a bigger problem.”

Richard had announced Claire’s wedding publicly.

Tomorrow afternoon.

Michael Grant.

Press invited.

Legal observers present.

Claire stared at the announcement.

“He’s going to make it look like I consented.”

Sophia said, “Then we stop the wedding.”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

Everyone looked at him.

“We let it happen.”

Claire stared.

“Excuse me?”

“Not the marriage. The ceremony.”

Emma understood.

“Make Richard expose himself.”

Daniel nodded.

They built the plan overnight.

Claire would pretend to return willingly.

Michael would believe the wedding was proceeding.

Richard would relax.

Sophia would gather evidence.

Daniel would remain unseen.

Emma would attend.

“Why me?” Emma asked.

“Because Richard needs to know you’re still divided,” Daniel said.

The following afternoon, Claire walked down the aisle of a private hotel ballroom.

Richard Mercer stood proudly in the front row.

Emma watched from the back.

Michael smiled at Claire.

“You look beautiful.”

Claire’s smile was convincing.

“Thank you.”

The officiant began.

When he reached the vows, Richard’s phone vibrated.

Sophia, monitoring from another room, intercepted a message.

Once Claire signs, Carter Holdings is exposed. Proceed with Emma’s candidate next.

Sophia forwarded it to Emma.

Emma’s blood ran cold.

Another candidate.

Someone meant for her.

The officiant asked Claire, “Do you take Michael Grant—”

“No.”

Gasps filled the ballroom.

Michael’s smile vanished.

Richard stood.

“Claire.”

She looked directly at him.

“No.”

Richard’s face changed.

For one second, the loving father disappeared.

Something colder emerged.

“You don’t understand what you’re doing.”

“I finally do.”

Michael grabbed Claire’s wrist.

Daniel appeared instantly.

“Let her go.”

Michael released her.

Richard stared at Daniel.

“Hale.”

Daniel’s eyes hardened.

“So you remember me.”

Security officers entered.

Sophia had already sent evidence of corporate fraud to federal investigators.

Richard smiled.

“You think you won?”

Emma stepped forward.

“No.”

Richard looked at her.

“This is just the beginning.”

He reached into his jacket.

Not for a weapon.

For a document.

He handed it to Emma.

She read the first line.

Her face drained.

Richard whispered, “Arthur didn’t tell you everything.”

The document was another trust agreement.

Signed years earlier.

And according to it, Emma could not inherit Carter Holdings by marrying just anyone.

Her husband had to meet one additional condition.

Emma looked up.

“What is this?”

Richard smiled.

“The reason Daniel Hale can never be your husband.”

Emma looked down again.

The requirement was devastating.

Any spouse of Emma Carter must have no financial, legal, or blood claim against the Carter estate.

Daniel Hale had one.

A massive one.

Arthur Carter’s company still legally owed the Hale family more than eighty million dollars.

If Emma married Daniel, she could lose everything immediately.

May you like

And Richard knew it.
