Chapter 5 - The Secret Behind the Will

Emma read the clause three times.

Daniel stood beside her without speaking.

Richard Mercer was escorted from the ballroom for questioning, but his smile remained fixed on Emma’s memory.

The reason Daniel Hale can never be your husband.

Back at the Carter estate, Sophia examined the trust agreement.

“It’s real.”

Emma stared out the window.

“How long?”

“Signed eighteen years ago.”

“Before Grandpa knew Daniel.”

“Yes.”

Daniel leaned against the desk.

“So Richard didn’t create it.”

“No.”

Emma turned.

“But he knew about it.”

Claire sat nearby, devastated but calmer.

“My whole life he prepared for this.”

Sophia nodded.

“Richard didn’t need to control everything. He only needed to understand Carter family rules better than everyone else.”

Emma looked at Daniel.

“We have three days.”

“Two days, fourteen hours.”

“Thank you for making it worse.”

Daniel almost smiled.

Emma sighed.

“If I marry you, I violate the trust.”

“Yes.”

“If I don’t marry anyone, I lose the estate.”

“Yes.”

“Could you stop saying yes?”

“Yes.”

Emma glared.

Daniel finally smiled.

It was the first genuine smile she had seen from him.

And that frightened her more than she expected.

Because she liked it.

Too much.

Sophia interrupted.

“There may be a solution.”

Emma turned.

“What?”

“Daniel’s claim.”

Daniel understood.

“No.”

Emma frowned.

“What claim?”

“The Hale debt.”

Sophia pointed at the trust.

“If Daniel legally waives every claim against Carter Holdings before marriage, he might satisfy the requirement.”

Emma looked at Daniel.

“That debt is eighty million dollars.”

“More with interest.”

“And you could waive it?”

Daniel’s answer was immediate.

“Yes.”

Emma stared.

“You’d walk away from eighty million dollars?”

“Yes.”

“For me?”

Daniel didn’t answer.

That answer was louder.

Emma shook her head.

“No.”

Daniel frowned.

“You need a solution.”

“Not one where you surrender what your family is owed.”

“My father’s dead.”

“That doesn’t erase what happened.”

“Money won’t bring him back.”

“That doesn’t matter.”

“It matters to me.”

Emma stepped closer.

“And it matters to me.”

They stood inches apart.

Claire quietly whispered to Sophia, “Are they always like this?”

Sophia whispered back, “Apparently.”

Emma ignored them.

“You spent your entire adult life searching for the truth.”

Daniel’s voice softened.

“I found it.”

“You found part of it.”

“I found enough.”

“No. Grandpa owed your family.”

“Arthur protected my mother for fifteen years.”

“That was because he felt responsible.”

“He wasn’t responsible for Mercer.”

“He still benefited from buying Hale Manufacturing cheaply.”

Daniel looked away.

Emma knew she had reached the real wound.

“Daniel.”

“My father lost everything.”

“And you deserve justice.”

Daniel met her eyes.

“I don’t want justice if justice means becoming Richard Mercer.”

“That makes no sense.”

“It does to me.”

He walked away.

That night, Emma found him outside near the old boathouse.

The place where Robert had launched his final boat trip.

Daniel stared at the water.

Emma stood beside him.

“My uncle died here.”

“Yes.”

“Claire’s father.”

Daniel nodded.

“Do you think Grandpa blamed himself?”

“Every day.”

Emma was quiet.

“My parents died when I was eight. Robert died before that. Grandpa lost almost everyone.”

“He had you.”

Emma smiled sadly.

“I think that scared him most.”

Daniel looked at her.

“Losing you?”

“Loving me.”

She wrapped her coat tighter.

“He taught me never to depend on anyone.”

“Probably because everyone he depended on disappeared.”

“Exactly.”

Daniel looked across the water.

Emma studied his profile.

“You’re going to waive the claim whether I agree or not, aren’t you?”

“Yes.”

“You’re impossible.”

“So I’ve been told.”

She stepped closer.

“I haven’t agreed to marry you.”

“I know.”

“What if I marry someone else?”

His jaw tightened.

“Then I’ll make sure he’s safe.”

Emma’s heart hurt unexpectedly.

“You’d protect me even if I chose someone else?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Daniel looked at her.

He seemed to consider lying.

Then decided against it.

“Because I love you.”

The world seemed to stop.

Emma stared.

Daniel looked almost annoyed with himself.

“You barely know me.”

“I know.”

“That’s ridiculous.”

“Probably.”

“You can’t just say that.”

“I already did.”

Emma laughed once, breathlessly.

“You are unbelievably bad at romance.”

“I’ve been busy avoiding murder attempts.”

Despite everything, she laughed again.

Then she started crying.

Daniel immediately became serious.

“Emma.”

“I hate this.”

“What?”

“That I believe you.”

He stepped closer.

“You don’t have to do anything.”

“That’s the problem.”

She looked up.

“I want to.”

Daniel touched her face gently.

No kiss.

Not yet.

He waited.

Emma closed the distance.

The kiss was quiet.

Not dramatic.

No audience.

No contract.

No grandfather’s command.

For the first time since the will was opened, Emma made a choice entirely because she wanted to.

When they separated, Daniel rested his forehead against hers.

“Still don’t trust me?”

“Maybe forty percent.”

“That high?”

“Don’t ruin it.”

The next morning, Daniel signed a complete waiver of the Hale claim.

Emma hated watching him do it.

But Sophia discovered something moments later.

The debt could not legally be waived.

“Why?” Emma asked.

“Because the claim belongs to the Hale Family Trust, not Daniel personally.”

Daniel frowned.

“My mother created that?”

“Apparently.”

“Who controls it?”

Sophia turned the screen.

Everyone went silent.

The trustee was Arthur Carter.

After Arthur’s death, trusteeship transferred automatically.

To Emma Carter.

Emma stared.

“I control Daniel’s claim?”

“Yes.”

Daniel laughed once in disbelief.

Arthur had planned further ahead than anyone realized.

Emma could legally settle the Hale debt before marriage.

She ordered Carter Holdings to pay the full amount.

Eighty-seven million dollars.

Daniel refused.

Emma ignored him.

“For once,” she said, signing the authorization, “you don’t get to sacrifice everything.”

The transfer cleared.

Daniel’s claim disappeared.

The trust condition was satisfied.

For the first time, the path seemed open.

Then Sterling Brooks arrived.

Emma had almost forgotten the attorney who started everything.

He entered the estate carrying a sealed envelope.

“You need to see this.”

Emma frowned.

“What now?”

“The final marriage verification document.”

She groaned.

“There’s more?”

Sterling looked unusually pale.

“I didn’t know until this morning.”

Emma opened the envelope.

Inside was a certificate Arthur required any spouse to sign.

Daniel read over her shoulder.

His face changed.

Emma looked at him.

“What?”

Daniel stepped back.

The certificate required disclosure of any relationship between the prospective spouse and Carter family employees, executives, trustees, or legal representatives.

Daniel’s name appeared.

So did Sterling Brooks.

Emma frowned.

“Why?”

Sterling sat down.

“Because Daniel and I are related.”

Emma’s heart stopped.

Daniel stared at him.

“What did you say?”

Sterling looked directly at Daniel.

“I’ve known for five years.”

Daniel moved toward him.

“How?”

Sterling’s voice shook for the first time Emma had ever heard.

“Because Thomas Hale wasn’t your biological father.”

Daniel froze.

Emma felt the room tighten.

Sterling continued.

“Your mother had another relationship before you were born.”

Daniel’s face went blank.

“With who?”

Sterling looked at Emma first.

Then Claire.

Finally Daniel.

“Robert Carter.”

Silence.

Claire whispered, “My father?”

Sterling nodded.

Emma’s knees nearly weakened.

Daniel looked at Claire.

If Sterling was telling the truth, Daniel and Claire shared a father.

And Daniel was also Arthur Carter’s grandson.

Which meant Daniel had a blood claim against the Carter estate.

A claim he could never waive.

Emma stared at him.

The marriage clause was impossible again.

But Daniel seemed barely aware of that.

He looked at Sterling.

“Prove it.”

Sterling opened his briefcase.

Inside was a DNA report Arthur had ordered before his death.

Daniel read it.

Then handed it to Emma.

Probability of biological relationship:

Arthur Carter—grandfather.

Daniel Hale—grandson.

Emma looked at Daniel in shock.

Arthur hadn’t simply protected Daniel’s family.

Arthur had been protecting his own grandson.

And if Richard Mercer discovered Daniel’s identity, the inheritance war had just gained a third heir.
