Chapter 13 - The Man Who Never Left

Lucas Bennett had been missing for seven years.
Not nine.
Not dead.
Not free.
The North Harbor warehouse contained a hidden medical room almost identical to Ashwood's fourth floor.
Two beds.
One empty.
One occupied.
Lucas lay beneath a thin blanket with an IV in his arm.
He was forty-one.
Older than the photograph.
Thinner.
But alive.
Claire arrived three hours later.
Andrew tried to tell her over the phone.
She refused.
"I need to see him."
Federal protection drove her.
Ivy stayed with Daniel.
Claire entered the hospital room alone.
For several seconds, she simply stood near the door.
Lucas slept.
Or seemed to.
Monitors beeped.
A nurse adjusted fluids.
Claire walked closer.
Seven years.
She had hated him seven years.
Not every day.
At first every day.
Then every week.
Then only when Ivy asked why other kids had dads at school events.
Claire had built an explanation because she needed one.
Lucas left.
Lucas chose himself.
Lucas was weak.
Now she saw IV scars on his hands.
A medical chart describing years of intermittent sedation.
North Harbor patient code.
No real name.
Claire sat.
"Lucas."
Nothing.
She touched his hand.
"Lucas."
His eyelids moved.
Slowly.
He opened them.
Confusion.
Then recognition.
"Claire?"
She started crying before she could stop herself.
Lucas tried to sit.
Couldn't.
"You're alive."
Claire laughed through tears.
"Apparently so are you."
His eyes searched the room.
"Ivy?"
Claire froze.
"You remember?"
His face collapsed.
"I've never forgotten."
Claire turned away.
Anger returned.
Different now.
More complicated.
"You left."
"I thought they'd kill you."
"You could've told me."
"I tried."
"No."
She looked at him.
"You disappeared."
"I sent letters."
"I never received them."
Lucas closed his eyes.
"Thomas."
Claire stiffened.
"You knew Thomas Mercer?"
Lucas nodded weakly.
"I worked for him."
Everything connected again.
North Harbor handled medical logistics for Vale.
Thomas handled Mercer's legitimate shipping interests.
Lucas discovered shipments that didn't match records.
Human cargo labeled as medical transfers.
He tried to leave.
Thomas learned Claire was pregnant.
Lucas made a deal.
He would disappear.
Claire and Ivy would be left alone.
For several months, it worked.
Then Lucas secretly began gathering evidence.
He found Daniel.
Not physically.
On a patient transport manifest.
David Merrill.
Same birth date as Daniel Mercer.
Lucas knew the Mercer family enough to recognize it.
He contacted Father Reeves.
Reeves helped him hide copies.
Then Lucas was taken.
"I thought they killed you," Claire whispered.
"They wanted information."
"About what?"
"Where I put the manifests."
"Where?"
Lucas smiled weakly.
"Mrs. Elellanar's store."
Claire stared.
"What?"
"She doesn't know."
"How?"
"Delivery invoices."
He explained.
For years, North Harbor delivered boxes to neighborhood stores.
Lucas slipped copied manifests into packaging labels destined for one location he knew Claire visited.
Mrs. Elellanar's.
He hoped Claire would eventually notice.
She never did.
Instead, Elena noticed unusual red writing on old delivery receipts when investigating Claire's disappearance.
That led to the five-dollar message.
The entire chain had been built from desperate people leaving clues for one another.
Andrew entered quietly.
Lucas looked at him.
"You're Anthony's son."
"Unfortunately."
Lucas smiled faintly.
"You look like him."
"I've been hearing mixed reviews."
Claire almost laughed.
Andrew approached.
"Why did you write 'find Andrew Mercer'?"
Lucas looked embarrassed.
"Because your father told me."
"My father knew you?"
"He recruited me."
"For what?"
"To document North Harbor."
Andrew sighed.
Of course.
Another secret.
Anthony Mercer had spent his final years constructing a network of ordinary people who could expose Vale if one survived.
Nurses.
Drivers.
Priest.
Logistics workers.
Not gangsters.
People Vale wouldn't see as threats.
Lucas continued.
"Your father believed you'd eventually break from the family business."
Andrew looked doubtful.
"He didn't tell me that."
"He didn't tell you much."
"Apparently."
Lucas stared at him.
"He was ashamed."
Andrew's expression changed.
"Good."
Lucas nodded.
"He should've been."
That answer earned Andrew's respect.
"Thomas?"
Lucas's jaw tightened.
"Always wanted control."
"Vale?"
"Always wanted silence."
"Reeves?"
"Afraid."
"Daniel?"
Lucas closed his eyes.
"The strongest one."
Andrew looked toward the hall where Daniel waited in a wheelchair.
"Yeah."
Lucas asked:
"Does Ivy know about me?"
Claire stiffened.
"No."
"Don't tell her yet."
Claire stared.
"Why?"
"Because I don't know who I am to her."
"You're her father."
"Biologically."
"Lucas."
"I disappeared before she was born."
"You were taken."
"I still wasn't there."
Claire's anger softened.
"You didn't choose that."
"I chose to work for Thomas."
"You didn't choose seven years in a bed."
Lucas looked down.
"Doesn't make me her dad."
Andrew spoke quietly.
"Kids decide that."
Both looked at him.
He shrugged.
"So I've learned."
Later, Ivy was brought in.
Claire told her first.
Not everything.
Just enough.
"There's someone I want you to meet."
Ivy frowned.
"Doctor?"
"No."
"Police?"
"No."
"Another mafia boss?"
Claire stared.
Andrew, standing behind them, coughed.
"No."
Ivy entered Lucas's room.
He looked terrified.
More terrified than Andrew had seen any prisoner or criminal that week.
Ivy approached the bed.
Lucas's eyes filled.
"Hi."
"Hi."
Claire knelt beside Ivy.
"This is Lucas."
"Okay."
"He..."
Claire struggled.
Ivy waited.
"He is your father."
Ivy stared.
Then looked at Lucas.
Then Claire.
Then Andrew.
Then back to Lucas.
"I thought he left."
Lucas flinched.
"I did."
Claire said:
"No. Not the way we thought."
Ivy stepped closer.
"Where were you?"
Lucas looked at her.
"Trapped."
"Like Daniel?"
"Yes."
She considered this.
"Did you know about me?"
"Every day."
"Did you want to come home?"
Lucas cried.
"More than anything."
Ivy looked at his hand.
Then took it.
"You can come home now."
Claire covered her mouth.
Lucas couldn't speak.
Andrew looked toward the window.
Daniel rolled his wheelchair beside him.
"Still think you're not getting attached?"
Andrew whispered:
"Shut up."
Daniel smiled.
For a moment, there was hope.
Then Rebecca entered.
"We found the missing manifests."
Andrew turned.
"Good."
"Not exactly."
She placed documents on the table.
The manifests listed dozens of facilities.
Most already closed.
Several active.
One record had been modified recently.
Patient transfer scheduled for forty-eight hours from now.
Name:
Anthony Mercer.
Andrew stared.
"My father is dead."
Rebecca nodded.
"We confirmed the grave records."
Daniel looked at the document.
"What facility?"
Rebecca answered:
"Upstate New York."
"Maybe alias?"
"No."
Andrew felt cold.
"What's the date of birth?"
Rebecca read it.
Daniel went pale.
Andrew recognized it too.
Their father's exact birthday.
Lucas whispered:
"Then someone is using his identity."
Rebecca nodded.
"Or someone wants us to believe he's alive."
Andrew thought of Vale.
Thomas.
The archive.
All the lies.
"Why?"
Rebecca looked at the final line.
"Because whoever is registered as Anthony Mercer currently controls one offshore trust worth eighty-four million dollars."
Thomas had claimed money drove everything.
Maybe he'd been telling the truth.
Andrew looked toward his uncle's detention file.
"Thomas isn't the end."
Rebecca shook her head.
"No."
"Vale?"
"No."
"Then who?"
She handed him a photograph from the upstate facility.
A man entering through a service door.
His face partially visible.
Daniel stared first.
"No."
Andrew felt the room tilt.
The man looked older.
Gray-haired.
But unmistakable.
Anthony Mercer.
Their father.
Or someone who looked exactly like a dead man.
And suddenly Andrew had to ask the question he never thought he'd ask twice in one week.
May you like
What if another empty coffin had been lying to him too?
