Chapter 16 - The Last Betrayal

Rebecca moved Claire, Ivy, Lucas, Daniel, and Anthony to a federal safe facility before sunset.
Andrew refused to stay.
"Where are you going?" Ivy asked.
"Work."
"You always say work when it's dangerous."
Andrew looked at Claire.
"She learns too quickly."
Claire nodded.
"Unfortunately."
Ivy stood in front of him.
"Are you coming back?"
Andrew paused.
The first time she asked something like that, he had given a promise about her mother.
Now the question felt different.
Personal.
"Yes."
"Promise?"
"Yes."
She held out her hand.
"Contract?"
Andrew smiled.
"I already have one."
She shook her head.
"New job."
"What job?"
"Come back."
Andrew looked at her small hand.
Then shook it.
"Deal."
Nathan's encrypted upload had not finished.
Federal cyber teams interrupted most.
But one buyer downloaded partial data.
A group tied to Vale.
They now knew the safe facility's region.
Not exact building.
Yet.
Rebecca moved faster.
Andrew moved differently.
He called every legitimate business owner, former associate, union contact, driver, bartender, dock worker, and street figure who owed him anything.
Not to fight.
To watch.
Brooklyn knew movement.
Cars that didn't belong.
Faces that appeared twice.
Andrew created a human alarm system.
Rebecca disliked it.
Then admitted it worked.
A suspicious van was identified near the facility.
Federal agents stopped it.
Inside were surveillance devices.
No weapons.
Driver talked.
Nathan was headed to Red Hook.
Old Mercer warehouse.
The first building Anthony ever owned.
Andrew knew why.
There was a tunnel beneath it leading to the waterfront.
Nathan planned to leave by boat.
Andrew arrived with Rebecca.
Anthony insisted on coming.
"No."
Anthony looked at him.
"You sound like me."
Andrew stopped.
"Fine."
Daniel tried.
Andrew pointed.
"You were shot today."
"Grazed."
"No."
"Andrew—"
"No."
Daniel smiled.
"Progress. At least you're consistent."
Anthony and Andrew entered warehouse with federal team.
Empty.
Dust.
Old crates.
Andrew remembered playing here as a child.
His father yelling at him to stay away from forklifts.
Daniel hiding inside shipping containers.
Family memories built in a place that had transported secrets.
Nathan's voice came over speaker.
"Welcome home."
Andrew looked upward.
Camera.
Anthony whispered:
"He knows the building."
"So do we."
Nathan continued.
"Uncle Anthony, you ruined everything."
Anthony looked at camera.
"I built something rotten."
"You built power."
"I built fear."
"Same thing."
Andrew shouted:
"Come out."
Nathan laughed.
"You're sentimental too."
"No. I'm tired."
"Of?"
"This family talking in riddles."
Rebecca almost smiled.
A door opened at far end.
Nathan appeared.
Alone.
Weapon lowered.
"Drive."
Andrew held it.
"You know it's copied."
"I don't care."
"Then what do you want?"
"Original encryption keys."
Anthony understood.
"They're on the drive."
"Exactly."
"You can't rebuild network. Everyone knows."
Nathan smiled.
"People forget."
Andrew shook his head.
"Not this time."
Nathan looked at Anthony.
"You chose them."
"My sons?"
"Over me."
Anthony stared.
"You are not my son."
"My father followed you his entire life."
"Thomas chose greed."
"You gave Andrew everything."
Andrew interrupted.
"I didn't want it."
Nathan laughed.
"That's why you had it."
There it was.
Resentment.
Not ideology.
Not strategy.
A child who grew into a man still counting what another child received.
Anthony stepped forward.
"Nathan."
Nathan raised weapon.
"Stop."
Anthony stopped.
"I loved your father."
"Not enough."
"I tried to stop him."
"Not enough."
Anthony's eyes filled.
"You're right."
Nathan faltered.
He expected denial.
Anthony continued.
"I failed Thomas. I failed Daniel. I failed Andrew. I failed my wife. I failed people I never knew."
Andrew looked at him.
Anthony's voice broke.
"I spent years calling fear protection."
Nathan tightened grip.
"Shut up."
"I won't."
"You always chose them."
"I choose truth now."
Nathan aimed at Anthony.
Andrew moved.
A shot.
Anthony fell.
Federal agents fired into overhead lights.
Darkness.
Andrew tackled Nathan.
Weapon slid away.
They fought.
Not elegantly.
Not cinematically.
Two exhausted men hitting years of anger into each other.
Nathan struck Andrew's jaw.
Andrew drove him against a crate.
Nathan grabbed metal bar.
Andrew blocked.
Marco appeared from side tunnel.
Nathan ran.
Toward waterfront.
Andrew followed.
Nathan reached dock.
Boat waiting.
He jumped aboard.
Engine started.
Then stopped.
Ivy's voice came from somewhere.
Andrew froze.
No.
Impossible.
"I told you he's scary when he's mad."
A phone on Nathan's boat.
Speaker call.
Ivy.
Not physically there.
Marco had connected a live call.
Nathan stared.
"What is this?"
Andrew almost killed Marco with a look.
Marco shrugged.
"She insisted."
Ivy continued through speaker.
"Mr. Nathan?"
Nathan looked absurdly confused.
"What?"
"Why are you being bad?"
Andrew closed his eyes.
Only Ivy.
Nathan shouted:
"Get her off this line."
"No," Ivy said.
Nathan stared at speaker.
"You don't know anything."
"I know you took people's families."
Silence.
"Daniel said you think power means people aren't people."
Andrew looked at Marco.
"You let her talk to Daniel?"
"Apparently."
Ivy continued.
"My mommy says if you hurt people because you're sad, you're still hurting people."
Nathan's face changed.
For one second.
A crack.
Then rage.
"Enough!"
He kicked the phone into water.
Engine roared.
Boat moved.
Coast Guard lights appeared across harbor.
Nathan turned.
Blocked.
Federal boats behind.
No path.
He looked toward Andrew.
Andrew stood on dock.
"It's over."
Nathan raised weapon.
Not at Andrew.
At himself.
Andrew's face changed.
"Nathan."
"Don't."
"You don't get to escape consequences."
Nathan laughed bitterly.
"Concern?"
"No."
Andrew stepped closer.
"Choice."
Nathan's hand shook.
Andrew continued.
"Everyone in this family kept taking choices from people."
Nathan stared.
"Put it down."
Long silence.
Then Nathan's arm lowered.
Weapon fell.
Federal agents boarded.
Nathan surrendered.
No grand death.
No martyrdom.
No dramatic escape.
Just handcuffs.
Consequences.
Andrew returned inside.
Anthony was alive.
Bullet had struck his side.
Painful but survivable.
He looked at Andrew from stretcher.
"Is Nathan alive?"
"Yes."
"Good."
Andrew stared.
"Why good?"
Anthony smiled weakly.
"Because dead men can't answer questions."
Andrew almost laughed.
"You're learning."
Anthony reached for his hand.
Andrew hesitated.
Then took it.
Not forgiveness.
Not yet.
But not rejection either.
Rebecca approached.
"Network files secured."
"All?"
"Enough."
"Witness addresses?"
"Contained."
"Claire?"
"Safe."
"Ivy?"
Rebecca smiled.
"Angry that Marco ended the call."
Andrew looked at Marco.
Marco suddenly studied the ceiling.
For the first time in years, Andrew felt something unfamiliar.
Relief.
Not victory.
There would be investigations.
Trials.
Headlines.
Consequences for Andrew too.
His own past wasn't clean.
He knew that.
But Daniel was alive.
Claire was alive.
Lucas was alive.
Ivy was safe.
Anthony had survived long enough to confess.
Vale, Thomas, Ethan, Ross, and Nathan were in custody.
The system that had swallowed people quietly was finally visible.
Andrew reached into his pocket.
Five-dollar bill.
Wrinkled.
Red writing faded.
He looked at it.
Marco smiled.
"Best contract you ever signed."
Andrew folded it carefully.
"Most expensive."
"Five bucks?"
Andrew looked toward the ambulance taking his father away.
"No."
He thought about everything that five dollars had cost.
Truth.
Family myths.
Old loyalties.
A life built on fear.
"Much more than that."
And somewhere in the secure facility, Ivy was making a new list.
Not of enemies.
Of people who needed invitations.
Because she had decided that when everyone was finally safe, they were going to have dinner together.
And Andrew Mercer had absolutely no idea that the seven-year-old who hired him was about to give him his hardest assignment yet.
