Chapter 12 - The Last Deal Daniel Made

I called Daniel.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

The FBI intercepted him six miles from the airfield.

He wasn’t helping Grant escape.

He was meeting him.

Wearing a wire.

Daniel had arranged the meeting without telling me because Grant had contacted him directly.

Grant offered him a deal.

Destroy the remaining evidence, blame everything on Vanessa and Charles, and Meridian would restore enough capital to save Carter Development.

Daniel agreed to meet.

But instead of taking the deal, he called federal prosecutors.

At the airfield, Grant confessed enough to bury himself.

He was arrested before reaching his plane.

Daniel’s cooperation mattered.

It did not erase his fraud.

But it mattered.

Weeks passed.

Vanessa pleaded guilty to assault, forgery-related charges, and conspiracy. Her cooperation reduced her sentence.

Margaret pleaded guilty to financial crimes and obstruction.

Charles received immunity for portions of his testimony related to older offenses.

Grant faced a mountain of federal charges.

Daniel resigned permanently.

And I filed for divorce.

He didn’t contest it.

One afternoon he came to collect the last of his things.

We stood in the foyer where we had once taken wedding photographs.

“You cut your hair again,” he said.

I touched the short, professionally styled bob.

“I decided Vanessa didn’t get to choose what it looked like.”

He smiled sadly.

“It suits you.”

“Thank you.”

He picked up his box.

“Was any of it real?”

I knew what he meant.

“Twelve years?”

He nodded.

“Yes.”

His eyes watered.

“That somehow makes it worse.”

“I know.”

He left.

I watched the door close.

I expected devastation.

Instead, I felt grief mixed with something lighter.

Freedom.

Then David called.

“The board wants to meet you.”

“Carter Development’s board?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because without Daniel, the lenders are preparing to force liquidation.”

“That sounds like their problem.”

“Emily, forty-eight hundred employees work for that company.”

I closed my eyes.

Of course.

There were always innocent people standing beneath the collapsing towers powerful men built.

“What do they want from me?”

David hesitated.

May you like

“They want you to save it.”

Again.
