Chapter 9 - The Man on the Camera

Daniel spent forty-eight hours in custody.

Then the footage fell apart.

A forensic analyst discovered the timestamp had been altered.

Daniel had entered Riverside.

But not the previous week.

The footage was eighteen months old.

Someone had deliberately reused it.

Daniel was released.

I was waiting outside.

He looked surprised.

“You came.”

“I came because we need to talk.”

Not because I forgave him.

Those were different things.

We drove to a quiet diner.

For the first time since our marriage began, Daniel told me everything without trying to manage how I received it.

He had found B3 eighteen months earlier.

He had taken one case.

Inside were documents proving his father’s involvement.

He panicked.

Then Margaret contacted him.

“She said she could make everything disappear.”

“And you believed her?”

“I wanted to.”

That sentence summarized Daniel better than any accusation.

“What did she ask?”

“Sell Riverside.”

“To Meridian.”

“Yes.”

“Did you know who they were?”

“Not at first.”

“When did you know?”

“Six months ago.”

“And you continued?”

His eyes filled with shame.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because by then Vanessa knew.”

I stared at him.

“She threatened you?”

“No.”

“She told me if the sale failed, she would expose my father and me.”

“You?”

“I had signed documents.”

“Illegal documents?”

“Some.”

My stomach sank.

Daniel wasn’t innocent.

Perhaps not murderous.

Perhaps not the architect.

But he had crossed lines deliberately.

“You could go to prison.”

“I know.”

“Was she blackmailing you?”

“Partly.”

“And partly?”

He looked down.

“I loved her.”

There it was.

No excuses.

I appreciated the truth and hated him for it simultaneously.

“Then why are you helping me now?”

“Because I finally understand what she was trying to access.”

“What?”

“You.”

I frowned.

“Vanessa couldn’t legally unlock Riverside. I couldn’t. Margaret couldn’t.”

“But I could.”

“Yes.”

The affair had created pressure.

The forged signature bypassed me.

But if the forgery failed, perhaps Daniel had been expected to manipulate me into signing voluntarily.

My marriage had been turned into an access code.

Daniel slid a key across the table.

“What is this?”

“A private storage unit.”

“Whose?”

“My father’s.”

“You knew about another archive?”

“I found it yesterday.”

“Why give it to me?”

“Because I’ve done enough damage.”

I took the key.

That evening David and I opened the unit.

Inside were only three boxes.

The first contained Thomas Carter’s personal records.

The second contained cash.

The third contained photographs.

One showed Thomas Carter.

One showed Charles Voss.

One showed Margaret.

And standing beside all three was a fourth person.

A much younger Richard Hale.

My father.

On the back, someone had written:

FOUR PARTNERS. ONE SECRET.

I stared at it until the room blurred.

Everything I believed had just shifted again.

My father hadn’t merely investigated the network.

At the beginning, he had been part of it.
