Chapter 4 - Box 417

The bank had been closed for twelve years.

At least publicly.

The building stood between two renovated towers, its stone facade darkened by decades of Chicago winters.

Ethan Moretti’s driver stopped at the rear entrance.

Claire held the key.

“Why would my mother come here?”

Ethan looked at the building.

“Because my father still owns it.”

A security camera turned toward them.

The door clicked open.

Inside waited an elderly man named Samuel Price.

When Claire said Thomas Bennett’s name, he lowered his eyes.

“I wondered when you would come.”

“You knew my father?”

“Yes.”

“Where’s my mother?”

“Safe.”

Claire stepped closer.

“Where?”

“She asked me not to tell you until you opened the box.”

Claire wanted to scream.

Instead she followed him.

Box 417 was not a small safety deposit box.

It was a private vault.

Inside were ledgers.

Photographs.

Cassette recordings.

Corporate records.

And a sealed letter addressed to Claire.

Her hands shook as she opened it.

Thomas Bennett had written the letter weeks before his death.

He explained everything.

He had discovered Raymond Cole diverting Moretti money into companies controlled by Daniel Parker.

The theft had started small.

Then expanded into real estate.

Thomas had gathered proof.

He planned to expose Cole.

But someone discovered what he was doing.

Thomas feared for Ruth and Claire.

So he divided the evidence.

Some went into Box 417.

The rest he gave to Ruth.

One sentence stopped Claire cold.

If anything happens to me, Vincent will protect you, but only if Raymond does not reach him first.

Ethan read it twice.

“My father never knew.”

Samuel shook his head.

“Thomas disappeared before the meeting.”

“He died.”

Samuel looked at Claire.

“Yes.”

“You think Raymond killed him?”

“I think Thomas Bennett was terrified for a reason.”

A door opened behind them.

Ruth entered.

Claire ran to her.

“Mom!”

They embraced.

Claire was angry, relieved, frightened all at once.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because I wanted you to have a normal life.”

Claire almost laughed through her tears.

“That didn’t work.”

Ruth smiled sadly.

“No.”

She explained Ethan Parker’s message.

He had contacted her that evening.

But not to threaten her.

To warn her.

“He said his father knew you had started investigating Riverstone.”

Claire stared.

“Ethan helped you?”

“He told me to disappear before Daniel could find me.”

Ethan Moretti asked, “Why would Parker turn against his father?”

Ruth looked at Claire.

“Maybe because he finally realized what kind of man he had become.”

Claire wasn’t ready to forgive him.

But the story had changed.

They spent hours reviewing evidence.

The scheme was larger than Riverstone.

Raymond Cole and Daniel Parker had stolen millions from Vincent Moretti over two decades.

Vanessa’s father had laundered construction payments through inflated contracts.

Then Vincent suffered his stroke.

The conspirators accelerated their plan.

Ethan Moretti stood in their way.

Claire stood in their way.

So they targeted both.

One with marriage.

One with a car crash.

Susan arrived before dawn.

She examined the documents.

“This could destroy them.”

“Then we release it.”

“Not yet.”

Claire frowned.

“Why?”

“Because paper proves fraud. It doesn’t prove attempted murder.”

Ethan looked at her.

“And if we move now, whoever ordered the crash disappears.”

Susan nodded.

They needed the conspirators to believe the evidence was still hidden.

So they returned to the hospital.

Claire resumed work.

Ethan resumed rehabilitation.

And they waited.

Three days later Vanessa returned.

She looked perfect.

Red dress.

Diamonds.

Cold smile.

“I want five minutes alone.”

“No,” Claire said.

Vanessa ignored her.

She approached Ethan.

“I’m willing to forgive you.”

Ethan almost laughed.

“For what?”

“For humiliating me.”

Claire watched Vanessa carefully.

Ethan said, “The engagement is over.”

Vanessa’s smile disappeared.

“You don’t mean that.”

“I do.”

“You need my father.”

“No.”

“You need me.”

“No.”

Her face twisted.

Then she struck him.

Claire moved instantly.

She stepped between them, palm raised.

“Stop.”

Vanessa glared.

“You again.”

Claire held the black folder against her chest.

Inside was the photograph.

And copies of Thomas’s records.

“I know exactly who you are,” Claire said.

Vanessa noticed the folder.

Her eyes changed.

“What’s in there?”

“Nothing you need to worry about.”

Vanessa lunged.

Claire stepped back.

Ethan grabbed Vanessa’s wrist.

For the first time since the accident, his leg moved sharply against the wheelchair footrest.

Vanessa stared.

“You can move?”

Ethan released her.

“More every day.”

Fear flashed across her face.

Claire opened the folder.

She showed Ethan the photograph.

“Where did you get this?” he asked, playing his role perfectly.

Vanessa backed away.

“She’s lying.”

Claire reached into the folder.

She removed the black envelope with the gold emblem.

Then placed it in Ethan’s hand.

“Then ask her what’s inside.”

Vanessa went completely still.

The envelope contained only copies.

But Vanessa didn’t know that.

She ran.

Exactly as they hoped.

Security cameras followed her to the parking garage.

A private investigator followed her car.

She drove directly to Daniel Parker’s office.

Two hours later, Susan received photographs.

Daniel.

Vanessa.

Raymond Cole.

All together.

They finally had the conspiracy in one room.

Then Claire’s phone rang.

Ethan Parker.

His voice was shaking.

“Claire, listen carefully.”

“What happened?”

“My father knows about Box 417.”

Claire’s blood ran cold.

“How?”

“I don’t know.”

“Where are you?”

Silence.

Then Ethan whispered:

“I’m inside his office.”

Claire stood.

“What do you see?”

“A list.”

“What list?”

“Names.”

He stopped breathing for a second.

Then said:

“Your father’s name is on it.”

Claire gripped the phone.

“And?”

“My name is underneath his.”

Before Claire could answer, she heard a door open on Ethan’s end.

Daniel Parker’s voice followed.

“Give me the phone, son.”

May you like

The call ended.
