Chapter 5 - The Son Who Chose Too Late

Claire called Ethan Parker back.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

Susan told her not to go.

Ethan Moretti told her the same thing.

Claire went anyway.

But this time she didn’t go alone.

Two detectives from a state financial crimes unit accompanied her.

Susan had already provided enough evidence to open an investigation independent of the local officers who had dismissed Ethan Moretti’s crash.

Daniel Parker’s office was empty.

A broken phone lay beneath the desk.

There was blood on the carpet.

Claire stared at it.

Detective Laura Ramirez stopped her from touching anything.

They found Ethan Parker forty minutes later.

He was alive.

Daniel had left him unconscious in a storage room.

At the hospital, Claire stood outside his room.

She had once planned to marry this man.

Now she barely recognized him.

When he woke, his first word was her name.

“Claire.”

She entered.

His left eye was swollen.

“What happened?”

“My father realized I copied the list.”

“What list?”

“People Raymond had paid.”

“Police?”

“Judges. Contractors. Officials.”

Ethan swallowed.

“And accidents.”

Claire’s heart stopped.

“What do you mean?”

“Your father was there.”

Thomas Bennett.

1999.

Vehicle intervention.

Payment approved.

Raymond Cole.

Claire sat down.

For twenty-three years, Ruth had wondered.

Now they knew.

Her father had been murdered.

Ethan Parker began crying.

“I’m sorry.”

Claire looked at him.

“For what?”

“For all of it.”

He admitted the truth.

At the beginning, he had known Claire’s marriage would benefit the Parker family.

Daniel told him the Bennett trust would strengthen Riverstone.

Ethan convinced himself it was harmless because he genuinely fell in love with Claire.

But every time his parents insulted Ruth, he remained silent.

Every time Claire questioned a document, he told her not to worry.

He chose comfort over courage.

“I loved you,” he said.

Claire believed him.

That was what made it sad.

“Love without respect isn’t enough.”

“I know.”

He closed his eyes.

“I know now.”

He gave police the copied list.

Arrest warrants followed.

Caldwell executives were detained.

Several officials resigned.

But Raymond Cole disappeared.

So did Vanessa.

Daniel Parker was arrested attempting to board a private plane.

He refused to cooperate.

Claire thought the danger was ending.

Then Ethan Moretti vanished from the hospital.

His wheelchair remained in his room.

His phone remained on the bed.

Claire found one thing missing.

The black envelope.

Security footage showed a hospital orderly pushing Ethan through a service corridor.

The orderly was fake.

Claire recognized him from one of Thomas’s photographs.

A Cole employee.

She called police.

Then she noticed something beneath Ethan’s pillow.

A handwritten note.

Warehouse 18.

Claire knew it was bait.

So did Susan.

So did the detectives.

But bait could work both ways.

Warehouse 18 stood along the river.

Police surrounded the area quietly.

Claire remained in a surveillance vehicle.

At least she was supposed to.

Inside the warehouse, Raymond Cole stood behind Ethan Moretti.

Vanessa paced nearby.

“You should have stayed helpless,” she told Ethan.

He looked at her.

“You should have learned patience.”

Raymond demanded Box 417.

Ethan smiled.

“You really think I brought it?”

Raymond hit him.

Vanessa flinched.

Not because she cared.

Because she was losing control.

Raymond turned toward her.

“You said the nurse had the documents.”

“She did.”

“Then where is she?”

Claire’s voice came from behind them.

“Here.”

Everyone turned.

Claire stood near the entrance.

Her heart hammered.

She held the black folder.

Raymond raised a gun.

Police were listening through Claire’s concealed microphone.

But they needed the confession.

Claire lifted the folder.

“You killed my father for this.”

Raymond smiled.

“Your father died because he couldn’t mind his business.”

There.

The words were transmitted.

Claire continued.

“And Ethan’s crash?”

Vanessa answered before Raymond could stop her.

“He was supposed to stay injured!”

Silence.

Ethan stared at her.

Vanessa realized what she had said.

Police moved.

Everything happened at once.

Raymond grabbed Claire.

Ethan pushed himself out of the wheelchair.

His legs buckled.

But he stood.

For two seconds.

Maybe three.

Long enough to slam into Raymond.

The gun fell.

Claire broke free.

Officers flooded the warehouse.

Vanessa screamed.

Raymond reached for the weapon.

Detective Ramirez kicked it away.

Within seconds, both were handcuffed.

Claire ran toward Ethan.

He was on the floor.

“Are you hurt?”

He looked up.

Then smiled.

“I stood.”

Claire laughed despite herself.

“Yes.”

“I actually stood.”

She helped him sit.

Police led Vanessa past them.

She stopped.

“You think this makes you a hero?”

Claire looked at her.

“No.”

Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.

Claire took Ethan’s hand.

“It makes you finished.”

Weeks later, prosecutors charged Raymond Cole with murder, attempted murder, fraud, racketeering, and conspiracy.

Vanessa faced attempted murder, assault, conspiracy, and financial crimes.

Daniel Parker agreed to cooperate after learning how much evidence his son had provided.

The Parker empire collapsed.

But one mystery remained.

Thomas Bennett’s vault contained a second sealed compartment.

Nobody had the key.

Until Ruth found something sewn into the lining of an old navy coat that had belonged to Thomas.

A tiny brass key.

Claire opened the compartment with Ethan beside her.

Inside was not money.

Not evidence.

It was a letter.

Addressed to Vincent Moretti.

Ethan read the first line.

Then looked at Claire in disbelief.

“What?”

He handed it to her.

Claire read:

May you like

Vincent, if I fail, protect Claire. She owns half of Riverstone, although she does not know it yet.
