Chapter 12 - The Call Three Days Before the Wedding

Robert had suffered a heart attack.
Not fatal.
But serious.
He was rushed into surgery.
Caleb and Vivian reached the hospital first.
Tessa arrived twenty minutes later.
Vivian was sitting alone in the corridor.
For years she had seemed unstoppable.
Now she looked terrified.
Tessa sat beside her.
Vivian said, “He was complaining about his shoulder this morning.”
Her hands shook.
“I told him to stop being dramatic.”
“You didn’t know.”
“I should have known.”
Tessa took her hand.
“You didn’t.”
Vivian looked at their hands.
Then began sobbing.
Not elegant tears.
Not controlled tears.
Real ones.
“I can’t lose him.”
Tessa held her.
For the first time, there was no competition between them.
No wedding.
No boundaries.
No roles.
Just two frightened women loving the same family.
Caleb came down the hall.
He saw them together.
His eyes filled.
Robert survived surgery.
Doctors expected a strong recovery.
But he would remain hospitalized through the wedding.
Caleb told Tessa, “We postpone.”
She agreed immediately.
No debate.
No sunk costs.
No guests.
No venue concerns.
Just the right decision.
They postponed.
Most vendors moved the date.
One could not.
They lost money.
Nobody cared.
Two weeks later Robert came home.
He looked at Caleb.
“You postponed because of me?”
“Of course.”
“You shouldn’t have.”
Caleb laughed.
“Dad.”
“I mean it.”
“We wanted you there.”
Robert looked toward Tessa.
“You sure?”
She smiled.
“I already married into enough Sutton drama. I’m getting the full set.”
Robert laughed so hard Vivian told him to watch his heart.
The room relaxed.
Then Robert became serious.
“I spent thirty years avoiding hard conversations.”
He looked at his son.
“Don’t copy me.”
Caleb nodded.
“I won’t.”
Robert looked toward Vivian.
“We’re learning.”
She squeezed his hand.
“Yes.”
The wedding was rescheduled for September.
Smaller.
Even more intimate.
Robert’s health scare changed all of us.
Things that once seemed enormous became small.
Guest lists.
Flowers.
Traditions.
Things that seemed small became enormous.
Truth.
Time.
Choice.
Presence.
But one unresolved issue remained.
The anonymous source who had fed information to the blog had known details only a handful of people knew.
Someone close to the family had betrayed them.

And when Hannah discovered who it was, Vivian faced one final test.
