Chapter 9 - Caleb’s Secret About the Dinner

Luis called Tessa.

He had debated doing so for weeks.

Finally he decided she deserved to know.

“Your fiancé came to the restaurant two days before the dinner.”

Tessa went still.

“Caleb?”

“Yes.”

“He told me he didn’t know how big the dinner would be.”

Luis hesitated.

“He knew there was a private room.”

That was technically not the same thing.

But it was close enough to hurt.

“How many guests did he know about?”

“I can’t say.”

Luis explained Caleb had stopped by to drop off photographs Vivian wanted displayed near the entrance.

He had seen multiple tables being arranged.

He had seen the seating chart.

He had even asked Luis whether there would be twenty or twenty-four people.

Tessa thanked him and ended the call.

Then she waited.

She did not call me.

She did not call Caleb immediately.

She needed to decide what she wanted from the conversation.

Truth.

Not excuses.

That evening she asked him to come over.

“Did you know how many people were coming?”

Caleb’s face told her before his mouth did.

“Tess—”

“Yes or no.”

“Yes.”

She closed her eyes.

“How long?”

“Two days.”

“You looked me in the face and said you didn’t know how many.”

“I panicked.”

“You lied.”

“Yes.”

The simplicity shocked her.

No defense.

No explanation.

At least not yet.

“Why?”

“Because I knew you wouldn’t go.”

“Exactly.”

“I know.”

“You let me walk into a room full of people because you knew I wouldn’t consent if you told me.”

Caleb’s eyes filled.

“I know.”

“That’s worse than your mother inviting them.”

“I know.”

Tessa turned away.

For all his recent progress, that lie changed the foundation.

“Why should I trust you?”

“I don’t know.”

That answer stunned her.

Caleb continued.

“I can explain why I lied.”

“Go ahead.”

“I was afraid if I told you, you’d cancel. Then Mom would explode. I convinced myself it would be easier if you arrived and couldn’t leave.”

Tessa turned.

“You trapped me.”

His face collapsed.

“Yes.”

He sat down.

“I didn’t call it that in my head.”

“But that’s what it was.”

“Yes.”

He began crying.

Not dramatically.

Quietly.

“I think I finally understand why you looked so afraid that night.”

Tessa said nothing.

“I thought I was keeping the peace.”

“You were transferring the conflict to me.”

“I know.”

She looked at him for a long time.

Then removed her engagement ring.

Caleb stopped breathing.

“Tess.”

“I need this back in the box.”

“Are we done?”

“I don’t know.”

That was the truth.

“I love you.”

“I love you too.”

Which made everything harder.

She placed the ring in his palm.

“I need to know whether I love the man you are becoming or the man I kept hoping you would become.”

Caleb closed his fingers around the ring.

He did not beg.

That mattered.

He said, “Okay.”

Then he left.

When Tessa told me, I hugged her.

She cried against my shoulder.

“I thought things were getting better.”

“They were.”

“Then why does this feel worse?”

“Because progress doesn’t erase history.”

For six weeks, they barely spoke.

Caleb continued therapy.

Tessa started therapy too.

Not because there was something wrong with her.

Because she wanted help separating love from fear.

Vivian respected the distance.

To her credit, she did not contact Tessa.

Robert and Vivian attended marriage counseling.

Hannah visited for the first time in nearly a year.

The Sutton family began changing.

But Tessa did not owe Caleb a marriage simply because everyone else improved.

Then one rainy Thursday, she received a package.

No return address.

Inside was her engagement ring.

Along with a handwritten note.

I’m not asking you to wear this.

I’m returning it because it belongs to the decision we made together before I started letting everyone else speak for us.

If you ever choose me again, I want it to be a new decision.

Not an obligation to an old one.

—Caleb

Tessa read the note three times.

Then she cried.

But she still did not put on the ring.

Because love was not enough.

Not yet.

May you like

And the next decision she made would surprise everyone.
