Chapter 10 - My Father's Voice

"Life isn't about never being betrayed," Dad said on the recording. "It's about deciding what you become afterward."

I closed my eyes.

His voice was younger than I remembered.

He talked about mistakes.

Forgiveness.

Trust.

He said loving someone didn't mean pretending they were perfect.

It meant expecting honesty and having the courage to offer it yourself.

Then he laughed.

"If you're listening to this because I forgot where I put it, remind me I'm an idiot."

Mom laughed through tears.

So did I.

For five minutes, Dad was alive again.

Near the end, he said something that felt written for the life I was living.

"Don't let somebody else's worst decision decide what kind of man you become."

The tape clicked off.

I sat in silence.

The next morning, I went to see Emily.

She opened the door wearing sweatpants, no makeup, hair tied loosely behind her head.

For some reason, seeing her without the wedding glamour made everything feel simpler.

Real.

"I want to come home," I said.

Her eyes widened.

"Are you sure?"

"No."

She almost laughed.

"But I want to try."

She stepped aside.

Marriage after betrayal wasn't cinematic.

There wasn't one conversation that fixed everything.

There were difficult mornings.

Questions I'd already asked but needed answered again.

There were nights Emily cried because she thought I'd never look at her the same way.

There were moments I became suspicious for no reason.

But there were also breakfasts.

Grocery shopping.

Laundry.

Ordinary things.

Ordinary life began stitching us back together.

Ryan visited one evening.

Emily opened the door.

He hesitated.

"I owe you an apology."

"For stopping the wedding?"

"For doing it publicly."

Emily considered that.

"You probably saved us."

"That's generous."

"No. If we'd started our marriage with that secret still between us, it would've destroyed us eventually."

Ryan nodded.

Then she hugged him.

I watched the two people I had been angriest with become part of the reason I was healing.

Months later, Richard pleaded guilty to multiple charges but continued disputing parts of his confession.

Prosecutors prepared for the remaining case.

I stopped obsessing over every detail.

I had enough truth.

My father had been betrayed.

My mother had been frightened into silence.

Thomas had made terrible decisions.

Emily had repeated part of the same pattern by hiding truth in the name of protection.

And I had a choice.

Repeat it again.

Or stop.

So Emily and I made a rule.

No protective lies.

Ever.

Even when truth was uncomfortable.

Especially then.

One Friday afternoon, she came home holding an envelope.

My stomach immediately tightened.

She noticed.

"Bad association?"

"Very."

She smiled nervously.

"This one's different."

"What is it?"

She handed it to me.

Inside was a letter from the vineyard.

Our wedding photographs were ready.

Neither of us had collected them.

We drove there together.

The photographer had captured everything before the reception exploded.

Emily walking toward me.

Our vows.

Ryan adjusting my tie.

My mother crying.

Thomas dancing with Emily.

And then one photograph stopped me.

It showed Emily and me immediately after the ceremony.

She was laughing.

I was looking at her.

No fear.

No secrets visible.

Just love.

Emily whispered, "Do you hate that day?"

I looked at the photograph.

"No."

"Really?"

"I hate what happened."

I took her hand.

"But it was also the day everything hidden started coming into the light."

She leaned against me.

Then the photographer handed us one final photograph.

Ryan standing alone before his speech.

In the background, barely visible near the tent entrance, was Richard Hale.

And he wasn't looking at Ryan.

He was looking directly at Daniel.

In Richard's hand was a phone.

The timestamp was exactly one minute before Daniel received the first threatening message at the reception.

Richard hadn't merely known about the threats.

May you like

He had been there when they were sent.

And that meant his story about Evan was still hiding something.
