Chapter 6 - The Road My Father Took

My mother finally told me at three in the morning.
Dad hadn't been driving home.
He'd been driving to meet Richard Hale.
Richard had called him after he left the Bennett house and claimed he had evidence proving who had manipulated the company accounts.
Mom knew because Dad had called her from the car.
"Why did you lie?"
"Because Richard came to me after the funeral."
"What did he say?"
"He said Michael had been confused. He said if I started accusing people, you could become a target."
"So you stayed silent."
"I had a twelve-year-old son."
For the first time that night, my anger softened.
She hadn't been protecting money.
She'd been protecting me.
Martinez located Richard's house before dawn.
Empty.
His passport was gone.
But his laptop remained.
By afternoon, investigators had recovered deleted correspondence between Richard and Andrew.
Richard had designed the financial scheme.
Andrew had been the visible thief.
My father discovered both.
But there was still no proof Richard caused the crash.
Then investigators found an email written by my father hours before he died.
If Hale refuses to surrender the records tonight, I'm going directly to the police.
The truth became clearer.
Richard had motive.
Opportunity.
And twelve years of silence to protect.
But one question remained.
Who had sent the threatening messages now?
Police traced the prepaid phone.
A store camera showed the buyer.
Evan Bennett.
Emily's cousin.
They found him that evening.
He didn't run.
He asked to speak with me.
Against everyone's advice, I agreed—with Martinez present.
Evan looked exhausted rather than dangerous.
"I sent the messages."
"Why?"
"To scare Daniel."
"You threatened to kill someone."
"I wasn't going to."
"That doesn't make it okay."
"I know."
"Why protect Richard?"
His expression twisted.
"I wasn't protecting Richard."
Then he told us something nobody expected.
For years, Evan believed my father had framed Andrew.
But shortly before Andrew died, he confessed the truth.
Richard had manipulated him.
Andrew had followed my father on October 17, intending to frighten him into silence.
But he lost him on the highway.
When Andrew arrived near the meeting location, my father's car was already wrecked.
And another car was leaving.
Richard's.
"Why didn't Andrew tell police?"
"Because he was terrified he'd be blamed."
Evan had spent years trying to find evidence.
When he learned Daniel reopened the case, he panicked.
He thought Daniel's investigation would expose Andrew's role before proving Richard's.
"So you threatened your own family?"
"I wanted time."
"Time for what?"
Evan reached into his jacket.
Martinez moved instantly.
"Hands where I can see them."
Evan slowly removed a flash drive.
"My father left this."
Martinez took it.
"What is it?"
"A recording."
Andrew had secretly recorded a conversation with Richard two days after my father's death.
We listened.
Static.
Then Richard's voice.
"You followed him?"
Andrew answered, "Yes."
"And?"
"I didn't touch his car."
Richard said nothing.
Andrew continued.
"When I got there, you were leaving."
Long silence.
Then Richard said:
"You didn't see anything."
The recording wasn't a confession.
But it was enough to reopen every question.
And near the end, Richard said something chilling.
"Michael should've understood that some truths cost more than money."
Emily squeezed my hand unconsciously.
I looked down.
It was the first time we'd touched since the reception.
She immediately started to pull away.
I held on.
Not forgiveness.
Not yet.
But maybe the beginning of it.
Then Martinez's phone rang.
Richard Hale's car had been located.
At the airport.

And according to security footage, Richard had purchased a ticket.
His flight was leaving in forty minutes.
