Chapter 15 - The Final Theft

For twenty-four hours, we feared the worst.
Then investigators uncovered the truth.
The embryo had not been secretly implanted.
It had been destroyed after the storage facility discovered the transfer documents were invalid and the material could no longer legally or safely remain under the fraudulent authorization.
The clinic had followed its legal procedures after extensive review.
The mystery ended there.
No hidden pregnancy.
No unknown child.
No final scheme.
Just decades of secrets colliding with modern records.
Rebecca sat in our kitchen afterward and stared at the table.
“It feels strange.”
“What does?”
“Spending your whole life searching for a secret and discovering the secret doesn't fix anything.”
I understood.
Truth wasn't magic.
It didn't restore her childhood.
It didn't undo Linda's violence.
It didn't erase Ethan's mistakes.
Truth simply gave us the correct place to begin.
And that became our family's new rule.
No secret alliances.
No pretending.
No protecting adults from consequences.
No asking victims to make uncomfortable people comfortable.
Three months later, our house looked completely different.
Two cribs stood upstairs.
Boxes of diapers filled the hallway.
And Ethan had transformed the spare room into a nursery.
Then, during a routine appointment, Dr. Patel frowned at the monitor.
My heart stopped.
“What?”

She looked at me.
“Claire, I think we're meeting these babies sooner than expected.”
