Chapter 7 - The Missing Technician

Natalie had not shown up for work in eleven days.
Her apartment was empty.
Her car remained at Denver International Airport.
Investigators initially feared something terrible had happened.
Then they discovered she had boarded a flight voluntarily.
Destination: Phoenix.
Natalie returned with an attorney four days later.
And she brought evidence.
Linda had paid her.
Not to perform an illegal procedure, Natalie insisted, but to manipulate archived records and make it appear certain permissions existed.
Why?
Linda believed she controlled the last remaining embryo connected to Ethan's biological family.
But the embryo had never been transferred into me.
That revelation eliminated the most frightening possibility.
My babies were mine and Ethan's.
The strange developmental measurements had nothing to do with Linda's scheme.
A follow-up scan showed the smaller twin was developing normally, though still behind.
I cried with relief.
But another mystery remained.
If Linda hadn't used the embryo on me, where was it?
Natalie looked at Detective Martinez.
“I never released it.”
“Then who did?”
May you like
Natalie swallowed.
“David.”
