Chapter 5 - The Door Beneath the Square

Vey didn't fall to his death.
Eli wasn't sure whether he was relieved.
A platform caught the chancellor twenty feet below.
The entire chamber transformed.
Walls separated.
Bridges extended.
Thousands of golden lines illuminated beneath Greyhaven.
The city wasn't built above the Engine.
The city was part of it.
Every well.
Every ancient drain.
Every gate.
Every tower bell.
Connected.
And now everyone in the square could hear them.
Anna had designed the final safeguard.
When a Keeper commanded the Engine to "open everything," it didn't surrender control.
It revealed the truth.
Records appeared across the Silent Stone.
Names.
Orders.
Deaths.
Four generations of the Vey family had hunted Keepers.
Not because the Keepers withheld prosperity.
Because they refused to give one family absolute control.
The crowd read everything.
Vey's power collapsed in minutes.
But the Engine wasn't stable.
Warning symbols turned red.
The Heart had been dormant too long.
Rook reached Eli.
"We need to shut it down."
"How?"
A final message appeared.
Anna.
Not her voice.
Her words.
Two choices remain.
Bind.
Or release.
Binding would make Eli permanent Keeper.
The Engine would obey him.
For life.
Release would destroy the Heart's control structure forever.
The city could still use the Engine's energy—but nobody could command the entire network again.
Eli smiled.
His mother had left him a choice.
Not a crown.
That mattered.
Vey climbed onto the platform.
"You fool! Bind it!"
Eli looked at him.
"You really don't understand, do you?"
"This city needs someone in control."
"No."
Eli placed both hands against the Heart.
"It needs nobody in control."
He chose release.
May you like
The chamber exploded with light.
