Chapter 6 - The Choice No King Could Make

For eleven seconds, Greyhaven believed the world was ending.
Every bell rang.
Every fountain erupted.
Every locked gate opened.
The Silent Stone burned gold from base to summit.
Then darkness.
Complete darkness.
Eli woke beneath rubble.
Rook found him.
Mara found Rook.
Citizens found all three.
Vey was arrested by his own guards.
That surprised everyone except Rook.
The evidence displayed across the Stone had included names of families Vey had threatened, imprisoned, or ruined.
His soldiers had families too.
By morning, Greyhaven had no chancellor.
By afternoon, it had something more frightening.
A choice.
The Engine remained functional.
But no Keeper controlled it.
Its systems could be operated individually.
Water pumps could provide clean water.
Underground heat could warm public buildings.
Mechanical lifts could move cargo.
But nobody could close every gate or shut every furnace with a single command.
Eli had broken the throne before anyone could sit on it.
People called him a hero.
He hated it.
Heroes apparently received terrible amounts of attention.
For three days, strangers brought food.
For four, reporters waited outside Mara's bakery.
On the fifth, someone offered him a mansion.
"No."
"A house?"
"No."
"New clothes?"
Eli looked at his torn trousers.
"Maybe."
Rook laughed.
Then Eli asked the question he had avoided.
"Did my mother know she would die?"
Rook's smile disappeared.
"Probably."
"Why didn't she tell me?"
"Because you were a child."
"I still am."
"Exactly."
Rook gave him Anna's final letter.
He had found it in the chamber.
Eli waited until night to read it.
My Eli,
If you are reading this, then you were braver than I wanted you to have to be.
He stopped.
Started again.
People will tell you our family was important.
Don't believe them.
Names aren't important.
Choices are.
If the Stone recognized you, it did not mean you were born better than anyone.
It meant I trusted you with a choice I could not make for you.
Eli cried.
Quietly.
Mara sat beside him.
Neither spoke.
The final lines were simple.
Stay kind.
Especially when power gives you permission not to be.
Love, Mama.
Eli folded the letter.
Outside, Greyhaven's bells began ringing.
Not an alarm.
A celebration.
But one mystery remained.
The Silent Stone was still open.
Inside it waited one final compartment.
And when Eli opened it the next morning, he found something his mother could never have expected.
May you like
A second key.
