Chapter 3 - The Secret Her Husband Took to the Grave

“You knew my husband.”
Elena’s voice was almost too quiet to hear.
Alessandro did not deny it.
That frightened her more than a lie would have.
“Sit down.”
“No.”
“Elena—”
“Stop telling me to sit down.”
Mila was upstairs.
That was the only reason Elena wasn’t shouting.
She pointed at Daniel’s photograph.
“My husband died three years ago. I watched doctors try to save him. I buried him. I spent three years wondering how to explain to our daughter why her father went to work one morning and never came home.”
Her eyes burned.
“And now I find his photograph in your office?”
Alessandro looked toward Marco.
“Leave us.”
Marco hesitated.
“Now.”
The room emptied.
Alessandro remained seated.
“Daniel worked for me.”
Elena laughed once in disbelief.
“No.”
“He did.”
“He repaired elevators.”
“That was his legitimate occupation.”
“His legitimate—”
She stopped.
“What are you saying?”
“He wasn’t a criminal.”
“Then choose your next words very carefully.”
Alessandro nodded.
“Daniel maintained elevators in several buildings owned by Moretti Development. Fifteen years ago he discovered accounting irregularities connected to one property.”
“What irregularities?”
“Money being diverted through construction companies.”
“Your money?”
“Yes.”
“Stolen from you?”
“Yes.”
Daniel had reported it.
Quietly.
That investigation eventually revealed an internal network stealing millions from Alessandro’s businesses.
Daniel had refused payment.
Refused protection.
Refused involvement.
But Alessandro had never forgotten him.
“Then why was Patrick with you?”
“He was my investigator.”
Elena stared at the photograph.
“And Daniel?”
“Helping us identify who had access to restricted building systems.”
“That was twenty years ago.”
“Eighteen.”
“Daniel never told me.”
“He wanted a normal life.”
Elena swallowed.
“Did his death have anything to do with you?”
Alessandro looked directly at her.
“No.”
She searched his face.
“If you are lying—”
“I’m not.”
Daniel’s death had been sudden cardiac arrest at work.
No mysterious car.
No attack.
No conspiracy.
Just terrible biology and terrible luck.
Oddly, that truth hurt almost as much.
“Then why did Patrick send me to Bellucci’s?”
“That is what we need to discover.”
The answer came the following morning.
Patrick called.
Not Alessandro.
Elena.
Her phone rang from an unknown number.
She almost ignored it.
Then a text arrived.
DANIEL ASKED ME TO PROTECT YOU.
Elena answered.
“Patrick?”
“Elena, listen.”
“Where are you?”
“Doesn’t matter.”
“You sent me there.”
“Yes.”
“You put Mila in danger.”
“I didn't know Mila would be with you.”
“That doesn’t make it better.”
“No.”
“Why?”
Patrick breathed heavily.
“Because Alessandro had to survive.”
“Why me?”
“Because he would trust Daniel Carter’s wife.”
“But he didn’t know who I was.”
“Not at first.”
Elena looked toward Alessandro across the room.
His expression changed.
Patrick continued.
“And because you were the only person I knew who wouldn’t walk away.”
Elena felt anger rise.
“You knew nothing about me.”
“Daniel talked about you constantly.”
Her anger faltered.
“You knew him?”
“He saved my life once.”
Elena closed her eyes.
Of course.
Daniel had always been that man.
The one who stopped.
The one who helped.
Exactly like Mila.
“Patrick, who attacked Alessandro?”
Silence.
Then:
“Victor Salerno.”
Alessandro stood.
Patrick continued quickly.
“But Victor isn't the real problem.”
“Who is?”
“Someone inside Alessandro’s family.”
Marco entered the room just then.
Patrick heard something.
“Elena, don’t trust—”
The call ended.
“Patrick?”
Nothing.
Alessandro took the phone.
“Track it.”
Marco immediately began making calls.
Elena folded her arms.
“He said someone inside your family betrayed you.”
Alessandro’s expression was unreadable.
“There are several possibilities.”
One possibility arrived that afternoon.
Gabriel Moretti.
Alessandro’s thirty-two-year-old son.
Tall.
Controlled.
Perfectly tailored suit.
And furious.
He entered the townhouse demanding to know why his father had disappeared.
Then he saw Elena.
“Who is she?”
“The woman who saved my life.”
Gabriel looked at Mila coloring at the table.
“And the child?”
“Her daughter.”
Gabriel’s eyes lingered on Mila for a strange second.
Then he looked at Elena.
“You need to leave.”
“Gabriel,” Alessandro warned.
“She’s a liability.”
Elena stood.
“Nice meeting you too.”
“You don’t understand what you’re involved in.”
“That makes two of us.”
Gabriel ignored her.
“Father, Victor is moving against every company account we have.”
“I know.”
“Then why are you hiding here?”
“I’m recovering.”
“You’re playing house.”
The insult landed harder than expected.
Mila looked up.
“Mr. Alessandro is hurt.”
Gabriel stared at her.
Mila stared back.
“My mama helped him.”
“I know.”
“So you shouldn't yell.”
Elena nearly choked.
Alessandro’s mouth twitched.
Gabriel looked genuinely speechless.
Then Mila returned to coloring.
That night, Alessandro and Gabriel argued behind closed doors.
Elena didn’t listen.
She was tired of secrets.
But secrets seemed determined to find her.
At 10:40 p.m., someone slipped an envelope beneath her bedroom door.
No footsteps.
No voice.
Just white paper sliding across hardwood.
Elena picked it up.
Inside was a photocopy of a bank statement.
An account under Daniel Carter’s name.
Balance at the time of his death:
$2,400,000.
Elena sat on the bed.
Impossible.
Daniel had died with eleven thousand dollars in savings.
They had lived paycheck to paycheck.
There was also a handwritten note.
ASK ALESSANDRO WHAT DANIEL WAS REALLY PROTECTING.
Elena carried the statement downstairs.
Alessandro was alone beside the fireplace.
She dropped it onto the table.
His face changed.
“Where did you get this?”
“Under my door.”
Alessandro stood.
“Marco!”
“Wait.”
Elena blocked him.
“Is it real?”
“I don’t know.”
“You recognized something.”
“The account number.”
Her pulse accelerated.
“What is it?”
Alessandro looked at her.
“That wasn’t Daniel’s account.”
“His name is on it.”
“It was an escrow account.”
“For what?”
Alessandro didn’t answer.
Elena’s voice cracked.
“For what?”
“For evidence.”
She stared.
“Evidence of what?”
“A financial ledger Daniel discovered eighteen years ago.”
“And what happened to it?”
“We thought it was destroyed.”
“Thought?”
Alessandro looked toward the staircase where Mila slept.
“Daniel told me he had hidden a copy somewhere nobody connected to me would ever find.”
Elena felt cold.
“Where?”
“He never told me.”
Then Elena remembered something.
A box.
Daniel’s old toolbox.
Still sitting beneath Mila’s bed because Mila used it as a treasure chest.
Inside were photographs.
Birthday cards.
Old screws.
And a tiny brass key Daniel had once told Elena never to throw away.
She ran upstairs.
The toolbox was open.
The photographs were scattered.
The brass key was gone.
Mila sat awake beneath her blanket.
“Mama?”
Elena rushed to her.
“Did somebody come in here?”
Mila nodded.
Elena’s heart stopped.
“Who?”
“The man.”
“What man?”
“The one from the picture.”
“What picture?”
“The one downstairs.”
Elena’s mouth went dry.
“Patrick?”
Mila nodded.
“He said Daddy told him where the box was.”
“What box?”
Mila reached beneath her pillow.
She pulled out a folded piece of paper.
“He told me to give you this.”
Elena opened it.
Daniel’s handwriting.
She recognized it instantly.
Three sentences.
Elena,
If Alessandro Moretti ever enters your life, it means the truth finally caught up with us.
Trust him with your life.
May you like
But never trust his son.
