Chapter 4 - The Daughter Who Wouldn't Let Him Become a Monster

Elena read Daniel’s note six times.
Never trust his son.
Gabriel Moretti was downstairs.
Mila was upstairs.
And somewhere in the house, a man Elena had thought was Patrick Donnelly had entered her daughter’s bedroom without anyone noticing.
Elena moved immediately.
She locked the bedroom door.
“Mila, stay here.”
“Where are you going?”
“To talk to Mr. Alessandro.”
“Are you mad?”
“Yes.”
“Really mad?”
“Really mad.”
Mila considered that.
“Okay.”
Elena went downstairs carrying Daniel’s note.
Alessandro read it.
His face became stone.
Gabriel stood across the room.
“What does it say?”
Alessandro folded the paper.
“Nothing.”
Elena understood instantly.
He wasn’t protecting Gabriel.
He was testing him.
Marco quietly locked the front door.
Gabriel noticed.
“What’s going on?”
Alessandro walked toward his son.
“Where were you tonight?”
“At the office.”
“Who can confirm?”
“Half the legal department.”
“Did you know Daniel Carter?”
Gabriel frowned.
“No.”
That was believable.
He had been fourteen when Daniel first helped Alessandro.
“Did Victor?”
“Yes.”
“How well?”
“Very.”
Then Gabriel looked at Elena.
“What is this about?”
She studied him.
Daniel had written the warning eighteen years earlier.
Gabriel had been a teenager.
Why would Daniel distrust a fourteen-year-old?
Something didn’t fit.
Elena unfolded the note again.
Then noticed it.
The ink.
The first two lines looked slightly faded.
The final line was darker.
She held the paper beneath a lamp.
“Alessandro.”
He saw it too.
Someone had added the final sentence.
Daniel had written:
If Alessandro Moretti ever enters your life, it means the truth finally caught up with us.
Trust him with your life.
Someone else had added:
But never trust his son.
Gabriel’s face changed.
“Someone is trying to turn us against each other.”
Exactly.
The question was who.
The answer came from Mila.
She wandered downstairs holding her stuffed rabbit.
“Mama?”
Elena rushed over.
“I told you to stay upstairs.”
“I heard yelling.”
“Sweetheart, the man who gave you the note. What did he look like?”
Mila described Patrick.
Then she added:
“He had a funny ring.”
Alessandro crouched.
“What kind?”
“A bird.”
Marco immediately looked at him.
Alessandro’s face went pale.
“Victor.”
Victor Salerno’s family crest was a falcon.
Patrick hadn't delivered the note.
Victor had.
Or someone working directly for him had disguised himself enough for a sleepy five-year-old to mistake him for Patrick.
That meant the townhouse was compromised.
They moved before midnight.
The new location was a secluded property outside Boston that belonged to a Moretti holding company.
During the drive, Elena sat beside Mila.
Alessandro sat opposite them.
He looked exhausted.
Not physically.
Older.
“My son and I have spent fifteen years distrusting each other,” he said quietly.
Elena looked at him.
“Why?”
“Because I raised him to believe trust was weakness.”
“That sounds healthy.”
“No.”
He looked through the window.
“I thought I was preparing him.”
“For what?”
“My world.”
“And now?”
“Now I wonder whether I was only teaching him how to become lonely.”
Mila had been listening.
“Mr. Alessandro?”
“Yes?”
“Do you love Gabriel?”
The question startled him.
“Yes.”
“Did you tell him?”
Alessandro looked toward the front of the car.
“No.”
“Why?”
He seemed unable to answer.
Mila shrugged.
“You should.”
Elena smiled faintly.
Five-year-old therapy.
No appointment necessary.
At the safe house, Marco finally located Patrick.
He was alive.
He had been hiding after discovering Victor’s betrayal.
Patrick arrived before dawn.
Elena almost slapped him.
Instead she hugged him.
Then became angry that she had hugged him.
“You used me.”
“Yes.”
“You knew I had a daughter.”
“I thought Mila would be with your neighbor.”
“You don't get to think with my daughter’s safety.”
“I know.”
Patrick looked genuinely ashamed.
Then he explained.
Daniel had discovered more than stolen money.
The original ledger documented decades of payments involving Victor Salerno and several corrupt businessmen.
Daniel copied it.
He gave Patrick one key.
Kept another.
But after Daniel’s death, Patrick discovered someone had begun searching for the missing copy.
Victor.
“Why now?” Elena asked.
“Because Alessandro planned to make his companies completely legitimate.”
Elena looked at Alessandro.
He nodded.
“I've been dismantling everything connected to the old organization for years.”
Victor stood to lose money.
Power.
Protection.
And control.
“So he tried to kill you.”
“Yes.”
“And Daniel’s ledger could destroy Victor.”
“Yes.”
“Where is it?”
Patrick looked at Elena.
“Daniel left the answer with you.”
“I don't have anything.”
“Think.”
She did.
Daniel’s toolbox.
The brass key.
The missing key.
“Victor took it.”
Patrick shook his head.
“No. Mila did.”
Everyone turned.
Mila blinked.
“What?”
Elena crouched.
“The little brass key from Daddy’s box.”
“Oh.”
“You took it?”
“I put it somewhere safe.”
“Where?”
Mila reached into her stuffed rabbit.
There was a small zipper on the back.
She opened it.
The brass key fell into her palm.
Alessandro laughed.
Marco actually smiled.
Patrick whispered:
“Daniel would have loved that.”
The key belonged to a safe-deposit box at a private bank in Boston.
Inside was a flash drive.
And a letter.
Daniel had written it shortly before his death.
Not because he expected to die.
Because becoming a father had made him afraid of unfinished business.
Elena read it alone.
He apologized for keeping secrets.
He explained that Alessandro had once protected Daniel after Victor learned about the ledger.
And he asked Elena to release the evidence if the Moretti family ever came looking.
But the final paragraph was for Mila.
If our little girl ever reads this, tell her her father believed good people are not people who never become afraid. They are people who decide fear doesn't get the final vote.
Elena cried.
Alessandro stood outside the room until she finished.
Then she handed him the flash drive.
“This ends now.”
He nodded.
“Yes.”
But Alessandro had a different idea of ending things.
Elena discovered it when she overheard Marco arranging a private meeting with Victor.
No police.
No attorneys.
No witnesses.
Just Alessandro and Victor.
She confronted him.
“You’re going to kill him.”
Alessandro didn’t answer.
“That’s what this is?”
“He tried to kill me.”
“He endangered Mila.”
“Yes.”
“He betrayed your son.”
“Yes.”
“So you're going to become exactly what everyone thinks you are?”
His eyes hardened.
“You don’t understand my world.”
“No. I understand Mila’s.”
He looked toward the little girl sleeping on the sofa.
Elena stepped closer.
“She thinks you’re good.”
“That doesn’t make it true.”
“No. What you do next does.”
He stared at her.
Then Mila’s sleepy voice came from behind them.
“Mr. Alessandro?”
He turned.
Mila stood holding her rabbit.
“Don't go.”
Alessandro looked at her.
For perhaps the first time in decades, the most feared man in his world looked completely helpless.
And then his phone rang.
Marco answered.
His face changed.
“Don.”
“What?”
May you like
“Victor has Gabriel.”
