Chapter 15 - The Voice Beneath the Water

Elias told Aayoka about the dream.

She did not laugh.

That worried him.

“You know something.”

“My grandmother told me one story.”

“Now would be an excellent time.”

Aayoka explained.

Long ago, a woman had guarded the spring during a season of terrible drought.

Travelers came.

Some wanted water.

Others wanted ownership.

The guardian refused to let any one person control it.

When she died, stories said her voice remained.

Not as a ghost exactly.

As memory.

As warning.

Elias looked at the water.

“So she told me I belonged to her?”

Aayoka smiled.

“Maybe you misunderstood.”

“How?”

“She might not have meant herself.”

“The spring?”

“The land.”

Elias considered that.

Aayoka continued.

“Or perhaps belonging does not mean ownership.”

“What does it mean?”

“Responsibility.”

That word changed everything.

The voice had never demanded that Elias possess Red Mesa.

It had demanded that he stop treating the world as something he could endlessly pass through without consequence.

He had drunk the water.

Then found Aayoka.

Then discovered Creed.

Every step had forced him to choose whether he would run.

The spring had not trapped him.

It had confronted him.

Elias smiled.

“I spent three years afraid somebody would own me.”

Aayoka looked at him.

“And?”

“Turns out belonging isn't the same thing.”

“No.”

She touched his chest.

“Not when you choose it.”

The spring remained silent.

May you like

Elias no longer needed it to speak.
